Bush Guru Says President’s Bond with U.S. ‘May Be Lost’

ABC News’ Teddy Davis Reports: In the forthcoming issue of Texas Monthly, former Bush strategist Matthew Dowd writes that President Bush’s "gut-level bond" with the American people "may be lost" and that "wholesale change" is needed in Iraq.

"Sending in a small contingent of troops is likely going to be seen as not helpful," Dowd writes. "He’d be much better off with the public if he said, ‘This is a mess, we made mistakes, and the only way to fix it is a wholesale change.’ And that could mean either a serious increase in troop strength or withdrawal."

Dowd opines that Bush’s problems stem from his success in the 2002 midterm elections. ". . . when all the levers of power in Washington became Republican, creating consensus seemed to become unnecessary at the White House."

Of course, others have made these same observations before. But Dowd’s comments are sure to get lots of attention in Washington because of the very senior role that he played for Bush’s presidential campaigns.

He was Bush’s "senior strategist" in 2000 and his "chief strategist" in 2004.

Dowd is one of 15 prominent people who offered thoughts on Bush’s legacy to Texas Monthly in individual essays.

The others are: Douglas Brinkley, Robert Caro, Bobby Inman, Kathleen Hall Jamieson, Robert Dallek, Michael Lind, Paul Begala, Niall Ferguson, Espeth Rostow, H.W. Brands, Donald L. Evans, Marvin Olasky, and Bruce Bartlett.

Bush is a disgrace to the office of POTUS. Not only is Iraq a debacle, costing thousands of American lives and Trillions of dollars, but as someone else reiterated, Bush is determined to give this country away to criminal invaders.
Bush needs to be impeached NOW. He is a TRAITOR.

Mr. Bush is a lost cause because his house of cards was just that. He is just another typical politician that blathers words to fit a mold but really doesn’t have any foundation from which to stand.
He is a hypocrit of the ultimate kind, which is part of why our political system in general is so bankrupt. The Republicans are the stooges of Corporations and K Street and the Democrats are beholden to archaic and corrupt Unions and populism.
What is the informed citizen to do in such a situation? How do we even acknowledge an election as a ‘choice’? Bush is just a part of a bigger problem, one that is mainly the fault of Americans themselves and their lack of understanding, education and interest in their country and political system.
The comments thus far reflect those sentiments exactly.

Bush never had a “bond” with America. He was barely elected running against poor opponents, his first election had to be decided by a conservative supreme court. He got his wish to go to war and now and forever will be known as the Alfred E. Newman of American presidents. He has spent the little capital he had. It is gone, but there never was a bond.

It’s people who say simple-minded slogans like “America First How About It” that gave Bush the momentum he needed to bring our country down to the level we now find ourselves. If you want America to be first, start asking hard questions of your government. Do your homework about what’s really going on here and around the world. Hold your leaders accountable for their actions.

Bushes legacy has been lost due to his loyalty to the Corporations and dis-loyalty to the American people his Anti-immigration law bill and pro Free trade (i.e. exporting American Jobs) will bury him and his republican party faster than the war on Iraq I voted for him both times but I will not vote ever again for another so-called free trader

Seems to me its not just the War in Iraq. In Fact, I support the President in that war, although I believe its being used as a distraction for the real agenda…GLOBALISM! I resent the way the administration is stealthally ignoring the real problems in America, 1) the collapse of the middle class 2) the invasion of illegals from Mexico, Central and South America, China , etc. 3) the deterioration of the dollar along with massive spending/bebt on the new American welfare state. 4) Vindictive prosecution of Americans including Border Patrol Agents along with granting of immunity for an illeal alien drug smuggler who is now sueing the US for violating his civil rights. It seems that illegal aliens are granted civil rights while citizens are being malisiously persecuted.

Give me a break with the histrionics. Bush isn’t Washington or Lincoln, and he hasn’t yet fought to win in Iraq. But he’s also overseen the freeing of millions of people and enacted policies that have kept us from domestic attack for five-plus years in an age where millions of dangerous people very much want nothing else but to see us all dead. He’s also the first U.S. President since the days of the Barbary pirates, including his father and Clinton and Reagan, to see Islamic extremism as the threat it truly is and to do something about it.
I know, I know. Halliburton Bush is Dumb Bush Lied Chimpy McSmirk. But after you’re done, take a grown up look at what’s really happened.

Lets see here..JFK brought us VietNam (at first just trainers) and the Bay of Pigs Fiasco.
Jimmah gave us a fiasco in the desert of Iran while trying to “save” diplomats held by the Revolutionary Guard. Bill C. sent cruise missles into Iraq. Seems that the Party affiliation has little to do with who gets us in trouble in the world.

El Presidente Vicente Bush should be impeached for refusing to uphold his oath of office to protect our borders from alien invasion. His lack of action to protect our southern border and his refusal to deal with the MILLIONS of alien invaders in our country is disgraceful. I voted for him twice, and I sincerely regret it.

There is an old saying – “People deserve the government they elect”. What we have today is NOT the fault of George Bush but the fault of every single American that voted for him and his cronies – SHAME ON ALL OF YOU!

This “gut-level bond”…what Dowd is saying, if I understand him correctly, is that the Reagan Era innovation of Stupid Is Good and its convention of Stupid Is Popular has run its course.
Maybe it was all just stupidity. Actually, forget the “maybe”. It was.

Bush should be impeached for not only mis managing Iraq, he got us in but won’t let the generals finish the job. In addition he has thrown open the borders, put border patrol agents in jail on the word of a repeat drug smuggler, he is bringing in 7000 refugees from Iraq, he has just made a worse deal with North Korea than Clinton did. I am a life long conservative and voted for Bush twice and he has destroyed the Republican Party. He has guaranteed Hillary as our next President and a Democrat Congress for years unless the Republicans in Congress start the process to remove him from office and get back to the true roots of the party. Mr Dowd is trying to get on a train that left the station several years ago. Now the only person who believes Bush is Bush and a couple of abortion clinic bombers. Also, well put Chuck, shame on the news outlets for letting the lies go unchallenged. We deserve better from the press.

If you think we have problems now wait until a million people from Iraq are allowed in to the US because of the collapse that follows our withdrawal. And these people will not be vetted any better than the Bosnian that terrorized the Mall in Utah.

I would love to see Americans express an opinion on fact rather than emotion! All I see is emotional based opinion with very little, if any, facts to back the opinion up. It is a fact that Saddam gave $25 Thousand for each suicide bomber in Isreal. It is a fact that Saddam actively pursued Nuclear technology in the past. It is a fact that Saddam marched his opposers out of an auditorium and had them tortured and/or executed when he first took power. It is a fact that he has used chemical and biological weapons on the Iranians and his own people. It is a fact that there was a concensus that he still had those weapons before the United States went in and removed him from power. People are bashing our President because things aren’t currently going well on the War on terror, which Iraq now is. However, what war has went well if you think about it? If you measure how well a war goes based on casualties, we are doing pretty well! In WWI and WWII we lost hundreds of thousands of military personnel. In the Korean Conflict and Vietnam we lost less than 100 thousand military personnel. in Iraq we have lost just over 3000. If you put that into perspective on how many U.S. citizens die in a year here in the United States due to violent crime, it is a fraction. think about it for a while. No war has a good outcome for soldiers, but the long term results of fighting an enemy fixed on ideology and allowing those who do the fighting to do what it takes to win is priceless! Putting limits on their abilities will ultimately lead to failure and that is what a majority of you, the American people are wanting! Help our military men and women do what it takes to win. That doesn;t include limiting the number that can go and fight, nor does it mean bring them home when the jobs not done!

Charles Krauthammer said it best and it applies to the mainstream media and most of the posters here: “Bush Derangement Syndrome: the acute onset of paranoia in otherwise normal people in reaction to the policies, the presidency — nay — the very existence of George W. Bush.”

JFK got us into Viet Nam (first just advisors)as well as the Bay of Pigs fiasco, Jimmah C. sent Military into the Iran Desert to “save’ diplomats held hostage. Our military barely got out and lost two transport planes and several dead and Bill Clinton sent cruise missles into Iraq, and troops into Mogadishu and Serbia.
When it comes to wielding power. the political stripe means little.

These comments here seem unusually stupid today, even by Internet comment standards.
For one, IRANSUX, where do you think you are right now? At an ABC Web site. Clearly their left-leaning bias hasn’t kept you from reading. So I guess they’re doing something right, if such a good-hearted American like you is still a reader.
Also, MIKE COON, did you *read* the article in the first place? The reason it was news was that it was *not* a milksop leftist child who criticized Bush, but his own past advisor, someone who’s probably not so much as even voted for a Democrat before, much less a leftist.

I believe Bush wasted his capitol with the American People by an authoritarian leadership style that might have worked 60 years ago, but will not make it in today’s world.
I believe Bush does have good motives and the hate speech against him has been shrill. It is a sad day when both sides are so interested in power that they cannot work together for the common good.
BTW I voted for Bush both times.
More then Bush is to blame here.

This article’s another example of how America’s liberal media jumps on any story that suggests the President has lost his grip. His grip is as firm as ever. He’s a man of principle who sticks to his guns and doesn’t waffle with every change in the polls. Liberals hate that. You can’t be a liberal and stick to principle. That would force you to make a commitment.
Interesting that none of the mainstream media covered the President’s press conference on 2/15 at AEI. He was very much in command and he outlined the new Iraq strategy with clarity and conviction. Too bad you missed that, ABC.

These Bush people don’t get it.
They abandoned their base.
They’ve flooded the country with nearly 40-50 million illegal aliens. Do you like the idea of gang-bangers in your neighborhood?(If you don’t perceive the danger of that, then you live in a gated community or they haven’t reached your town in significant numbers yet.)
They flood the country with muslims. Now they’re about to let in 7,000 Iraqis.
High tech jobs are going to H1-B visa foreigners who’re working taking high tech jobs from Americans because they’ll work for a lower salary.
US companies outsourcing jobs overseas.
Is this what US troops are risking their lives for?
What so corporate America can continue on in its status quo and so tens years from now they can open up Starbucks coffee shops throughout the Middle East?
America today is only a shell of its glorious past.

I served in Iraq for nearly two years as a civilian US government employee. I voted for Bush in 2000 and traveled to Florida to help him win the recount there. I voted absentee from Baghdad for Bush in 2004.
Bush’s failure to plan for postwar Iraq is catastrophic and astounding. Everybody had a postwar plan EXCEPT THE U.S.!!!! All the countries surrounding Iraq had a plan for when the Americans took out Saddam. The interests within Iraq, the Sunnis, the Shia, the Kurds, all had plans. Osama bin Laden made preparations, as did Moqtada al Sadr. But the arrogance and hubris of Bush and his top advisors prevented a postwar plan in the rush to WAR WAR WAR.

Those who argue George W deserves admiration because he stands by his convictions aren’t looking too closely at those convictions: He has ballooned the size of our government and our deficit so much that my fellow fiscal conservatives have totally given up on him; He has ruined American credibility and the GOP’s reputation for national security expertise by botching the reasons for war and then botching the war; and his immigration policy is unrecognizable. Knee-jerk Bush supporters need to open their eyes, even at the risk of embarrassment. Love the country, not the party. Please.

Matt wants to talk facts, but then he lists the Republican talking points from 2002! Saddam, in 2003 was a paper tiger. The control that the world had over his regime was nearly complete. He had no WMD. Remember that it was the United States that supported his war with Iran and provided the material for his horrors, which all occurred ten years before we invaded. The war had nothing to do with him…it had to do with providing the US with a “footprint” in the Middle East, control over the second largest oil supply, thus preventing China and India from that control, the need to protect Israel, and the requirement of keeping the dollar as the exchange for oil. All of this occurred while providing billions of dollars for friends and supporters. Read any of ten books out today on the failures of this war. We are now in a untenable position, aligned against all of Islam, made worse by incompetence and confusion. To ask the world to put up with our failures and to insist on staying with failed policy only makes our nation look foolish and arrogant.

This is hard – I too, supported GWB; creating friction with friends and family by going to the mat defending his anti-terror policies.
Then, as a thank-you:
1 he promotes his open border/immigration agenda.
2 Fails to aggressively fight those who undermine his policies (Sandy Berger, Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, Ted Kennedy, Murtha, Elite Media etc.)
3 Spends money like the proverbial drunken sailor.
4 Goes all wobbly with the ‘religion of peace’ BS about Islam.
The final straw was the prosecution of Border Patrol Agents Ramos and Compean with the accompanying complicity of his longtime friend Johnny Sutton.
What kind of message does this send to those who would steal across our borders to do us harm? What kind of message does it send to those protecting our borders?
Maybe Bush should be impeached for failing to protect this country.
As someone earlier said – it’s like being half pregnant. IF the President would aggressively pursue the enemy, lockdown the borders etc. I would support him. Until then, I don’t support him, the Republican Party or most politicians in general. Most all have sold us out.
I’m glad I found PoliticalRadar – I was beginning to feel like a lone voice in the wilderness.

Folks…. settle down and realize it will be decades before we understand a number of critical questions. Are the islamists a real threat to the U.S. or have they just been blowing smoke over the last decade that our country is the devil and needs to be wiped off the face of the earth? Does Bush emerge as a historic individual who had the courage to face a serious world threat, or a misguided President who had no idea what he was doing? Keep in mind that Lincoln was assailed with venom in his day only to be heralded a century and a half later so until history plays out we are doing nothing more than short term Monday morning quaterbacking.

People have short memorys. Bush does not. He knows we are in a war with islamo facism we must win. 9-11 was a small taste of what is to come if we do not confront this enemy. Sure, mistakes were made. So there are in EVERY war. Lincoln made many too in a very unpopular war. ALL wars are unpopular. That does not mean they are not necessary to the survival of democracy. Democrats encourage the enemy. The mainstream media with it’s anti Bush bias and bias by omission of news helps the enemy.
Islamo facists will not stop. EVER. They don’t care if we pull out of Iraq or not. They want us all dead or converted to radical islam. WAKE UP! Support the troops! Support the mission for God sake, because if we do not, 9-11 will seem like a pleasant memory.

History will be the ultimate judge of the Bush presidency. Polls mean nothing because people are only reacting to the news of the day.
Lincoln was considered a failed president during the Civil War but later generations consider him one of America’s best presidents.
Decades from now people might look back at the Bush presidency as a bold presidency that changed the world and protected the American way of life from those that want to destroy it.
No monuments have even been built for critics and nay-sayers. History will not remember Pelosi or Murtha or Reid. Bush will either be known as a great president or a failed president but at least he dared to fight when others wanted to put their heads in the sand and hope our enemies would leave us alone.

This so called Bush Guru was a presidential campaign strategist not a policy strategist. His job, as a “senior strategist”, was to get Bush elected in 2000. He aparently was promoted to “chief strategist” for the 2004 re-election.
His job was not to form policy.
ABC News is a sham. This article is not even news it is biased partisan commentary and anti-American propaganda.

The funny thing is…Until George Bush and his merry band of lunatics invaded Iraq, for the WMD’s, which, all miraculously disappeared, there really wasn’t much murder and mayhem occurring in that country. No more than what occurs in that part of the world on a daily basis. Iraq is a series of tribes, who pretty much have been at each others throats for hundreds of years. Saadaam was an s.o.b, but he kept the peace. That is what those people understand. Does ANYBODY even recall the reason we are there in the first place?? Saadaam dead. WMD’s gone.Anybody? Hello?….

Funny how all of these people who have never been to war are telling us how they are saving our military. This war might well have been optional at the time. It no longer is. And as far as what is going right and what is going wrong in Iraq, who could tell by reading the left wing crap out there. Talk to some soldiers, saliors and marines who have been there. Many of whom are actually volunteering to go back for addtional tours. Not something you would think from reading stuff from you guys. Most of the Iraq Vetersans tell a different story then what you get on NBC or CNN. Al Anbar provience has come a long way in the last year. The Marines on the ground there tell me that the Iraq tribal leaders are actually stepping forward to help stop this cycle of violence. Oh, by the way, they just opened another new school in Al Anbar.

Okay, liberals, we get it already. You hate Bush. You hate Republicans. Some of you may even hate the USA.
I warn you, however, that your hate is blinding you. The position you have staked out that Bush and America must be defeated at any cost will only come back to bite you (and unfortunately all of us).
Listen now and believe me later, we are only at the beginning of a long and ugly war against brutal, ideological Islamic extremists. These murderous thugs cannot be pacified or appeased! President Bush has shown more courage and truly progressive forward thinking by taking the fight to them.
Your continued attacks against the president and our military only weakens us as a country and ultimately prolongs this war. Wise up and see the big picture!

All the words in the world can’t hide the fact that our military has been hijacked by the Neocons. Our people are NOT dying for our freedom, or our future. They _are_ dying to secure wealth for Cheney,Bush, and their cronies. So when your boy comes home in a box, at least you can be sure that a buck was made by his sacrafice.

It seems as though Bush’s advisers should be held accountable for some of his decisions too. There is no way that ANYONE can look at the last elections in November and not see that getting our men and women OUT of Iraq was the MANDATE. why didn’t he come before the people that he represents and offer up a solution and plan for doing this? It seems absurd and, quite the Democratic Party way (not Republican) to throw more money at a problem and hoping it goes away. It won’t in this case. Also, why haven’t the Democrats offered up a plan of their own for doing this to the American people?

The government leadership in this country has lost its “bond” with America. No one on either side of the aisle makes any attempt to build consensus or negotiate compromises anymore. The trouble is our so-called leaders are too busy lining their own pockets and the pockets of their friends while patting themselves on the back to care what Americans think. Of course, pandering to the latest poll is when they pay lip service to what Americans think. What a crock of crooks.

What I don’t understand is why grant asylum to 7,000 Iraqis? I mean, I know their country is war-torn and all… but one of Bush’s talking points for years now has been “We’re fighting this war there so they don’t bring it here.”
Um… YOU’RE bringing them here. Good job, Einstein.

Bush, as well as those running the Republican and Democratic parties (including Matthew Dowd) have all lost their ‘bond’ with the American people.
They support:
.wide open northern and southern borders which allow anyone to enter the country with impunity – including terrorists, drug runners, pedophiles, sex offenders, and convicted felons.
.the destruction of our middle class through off-shoring, so called free trade, and both illegal aliens and guest workers who pay either no or partial taxes.
.creating the North American Union which will wipe out our borders and sovereignty without consulting with the American people
In short they have all sold out this country.
Regarding the borders, and jobs, I suggest joining numbersusa.com
which has people prowling the halls of Congress to give us a heads up, and a way to voice our opposition.
Thus far they have been a major force in preventing the bill giving amnesty to illegals, and opening our job market to the entire world under the guise of immigration reform. (This bill was introduced by Kennedy and McCain early last year and considered a slam dunk.)

Americans are the most stupid, weakest and certainly the most whining people in the world! How many were killed in 9/11? 3000! that is not even a portion of the people dead in Dresden, Berlin, Tokyo, not mention Hiroshima because of the American bombings….

Bush had the chance to do something heroic back in December: resign after appointing Gingrich as VP. Today, Bush is worse than useless. He is a millstone on the Republican Party and on the U.S. His heart was in the right place on Iraq and Afghanistan, but his strategy of small army with no border protection has proved impossible. Poor military thinking is the reason, and you have to go to the top of the chain of command to seek the thinking’s source. Bush has destroyed the conservative movement started by Goldwater, and it may be decades before it returns in any form at all.

I hate to break it to many of you, but there is no way to effectively seal the US borders without the expenditure of a large chunk of our Gross Domestic Product. Our borders are much too vast. The best that we can hope for is better control and knowledge concerning who is coming here. We can also hope that the countries south of the border will improve their economies and give their citizens more reasons for staying put. People don’t leave their native countries because they hate them. They leave them because there are no jobs and/or poor living conditions. As all humans, they are willing to risk almost everything to survive and survival to them means coming to the US. In the end, this is the root of all of our immigration woes. Until we can help make the rest of the world a better place to live, we will be plagued by an influx of refugees from the third world. However, as long as unemployment remains low, the problem remains manageable.
With respect to Iraq, I am quite happy that we have succeeded in drawing Islamic extremists there and dealing with them on foreign soil. Until we kill and/or break the resolve of a majority of the more violent elements within Islam, the war against terrorism will continue. Frankly, I prefer that it continue in the middle-east as opposed to in the buses, trains, and shopping malls of this country. Since 9/11, the terrorists have been thwarted in their attempts to attack us at home and have been mostly preoccupied with fighting jihad elsewhere. We owe that to a President and military that have been undaunted in their resolve to win this war against those who want to destroy western civilization. Sure, everything isn’t peachy, but it is much better than it could have been under a weak leader.
In short, I accept Bush with all of his many faults. I look at the objective evidence of an excellent economy and good national security and am thankful for what I have. I don’t spend time on useless conspiracy theories that encourage hatred and unrest. I see America as the last hope for worldwide freedom and democracy that will only fail if Americans lose their humanity and refuse to reach out and help the oppressed people of this world to gain freedom and control of their lives and countries without fear of retribution. Most of our soldiers understand the threat and the challenge that faces us and are willing to sacrifice to make the world a safer and freer place for everyone. I hope that more of us here on the home front will wake up and see the world the way it really is. If we want to preserve our freedom, then we must export it and help fill the world with governments that allow their citizens the right to liberty and justice for all. If we put our heads into the sand and abandon the cause of freedom outside of the US, it will only be a matter a time before we are consumed by the very threat that many are now trying hard to ignore.

To those who posted that people should do more research and find out whats’ really happening in the world I AGREE. However, in doing so, with an open mind, you may find yourself seriously questioning your convictions relating to the issue of tolerance and multi-culuralism in regards to Islam and immigration.
If you look at the situations in France, Britain, Sweden, Norway and Germany, you will definately begin to develop serious doubts as to whether integration is possible.
Visit Bruce Bawer’s website. Mr Bawer is the author of “While Europe slept-How Radical Islam is Destroying the West from Within”, a liberal, and gay. But, if you read his reports and commentary, and didn’t know his background, you’d swear he was a knee-jerk conservative. He’s not, he’s just been faced with too much reality to ignore it.
I voted for the other guy twice, my motto was “anyone but George” and I’m not even a Democrat. Mr. Bush broke his bond long ago, and we all know the popular slogans. Guess what?-THATS NOT NEWS It’s time to move past that and start recognizing the root problem. The problem is not the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, nor globalization, the root of the problem is an archaic ideology and it’s followers. They will not stop. They will not rest. They will plan, train, raise funds, plot and continue coming. We had all better get used to it.
I asked my wife, who labels me as a left-leaning centrist, “Honey, am I becoming some right wing nutjob?” She assures me I’m not.
ABC News bias is ridiculous. They are the same people who will continue to claim that Islam is a “religion of peace” after busses full of people on their way to work start exploding here.
Tolerance and multiculturalism are great until they threaten to unravel the very fabric of our way of life. Then decisive and un-apologetic action is neccessary and the American way.
Oh, and by the way, we’re rolling out the red carpet for 7000 Iraqis to re-settle here? Is this a bad dream. I’m speechless. I wish it was.

This WHOLE WAR was based on LIES.
Meanwhile, Bush helps terrorist by NOT killing them in Afghanistan, where they are.
AND for anyone who wants to say “No terror attacks on America since 9/11″, I have this to say:
A) Why should terrorists come to the US to kill Americans, when BUSH has conveniently MOVED US TARGETS TO THE MIDDLE EAST TO BE PICKED OFF LIKE SITTING DUCKS?
B) The BIG reason for no terror since 9/11?
DUMB LUCK.

The truth is that president Bush is doing what a president is suppose to do, defend our nation, ideology and our freedom. Being a president means to do your job even if it is not liken at the polls but he needs to have the vision of what will happen if he does not act to appeased the public. Many years down the road he will be remember as one of the best if not THE BEST leader this nation has have in a Long time. And I hope that we as a nation will not forget what happened on 9/11/01 because the moment we forget it we will loose the advances we have gain, next year elections are critical to send a message to the world and our enemies that we meant business and we want to be a free nation. Personally I wish president Bush can be in office for 2 more terms until this world wide terrorism plot is smashed to the ground. These plot is nothing else but the extremist (muslims) trying to have a global control by TERRORISING the free world! So in 2008 choose wisely.

I would go to war if:
1. The job was to completely wipe out a foreign country.
2. Take all resources, and install our own government.
3. Kill all men and children.
4. Impregnate or kill women.
5. Loot and plunder for personal gain.
6. There were no ‘war crimes’.
That is war… anything else isn’t… anything less is inconclusive… if a country cannot face the above 6 criteria then a diplomatic solution must be found.

I voted for President Bush both times. While I agree with his stated concept of Iraq, I completely disagree with the way he screwed up the implementation and his visible arrogance regarding accepting responsibility. The problem I have with Bush his is total disregard for securing our borders. Bush and his hatchet man John Sutton jumps anytime the Mexican government says jump. I honestly believe the Mexican drug cartel is in full control of someone in power. There is not one piece of evidence to support the statement that Bush cares more for an American citizen than he does an illegal. Bush has lost complete touch with Joe American and he needs to just go ahead and retire to the farm. I will say though regarding his first election, we are much better off, having not had the moronic Gore as the president of this country.

Posted by: Rocky | February 15, 2007, 4:29 pm 4:29 pm

You know, it’s very easy to sit back and criticize when you don’t don’t have to contribute anything “except” criticism. Given the President’s popularity right now it’s safe to predict that our next President will be a Democrat. When that does come to pass, those who are throwing the stones now will be the ones who have to come up with the goods.
Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, and a host of others will have to come up with a plan, rather than a daily dose of Bush-bashing.
The Democrats have already as good as promised tax increases and socialized medicine, but that’s the least of the problems we will probably face.
When the Dems pull us out of Iraq in a mass exodus, we will probably see Iraq become a base for terrorists, Iran and Syria will be calling the shots for the entire area since there will be no opposing force in the area. With that comes the possibility of petroleum supplies being interrupted on a scale we’ve not seen before, and acts of terrorism as we’ve seen in England, Spain, and other countries.
Of course, blame will be placed on Bush by the Democrats for a few years, but sooner or later they will have to come up with solutions rather than accusations.
I’m on up in years, and I don’t have to worry with it for too much longer, so I’m able to kind of look forward to seeing what kind of mess the Democrats will make of things. And mark my words, they will mess up. I can still remember Jimmy Carter.
The ones I feel sorry for are my children and grandchildren. Those of you who worship Howard Dean, Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, and the like, will get just what you deserve.
I don’t mind being wrong, but time will tell.

Its a good thing we didn’t have such media scrutiny (and bias) along with such partisanship in our government during WWII. We lost 10 times as many troops in one battle as we have lost during the whole war in Iraq. In WWII we knew who the enemy was and they were hiding in mosques and schools.
If we were to go back to 2002 and President Bush would have decided not to go into Iraq with the evidence we had available; then later Saddam were to have used a WMD you bunch of whining backbiters would be calling for the Presidents head for failing to do something.
You seem to forget that Saddam had numerous chances to comply with UN inspections and repeatedly failed to do so. If he would have allowed the inspections and the UN would have not found anything there would not have been a war. Its just that simple.
In my opinion we gave him too many chances and quite possibly gave him time to hide or move the WMD’s. Let’s hope I’m wrong or when these WMD’s fall into terrorists hands we will all come to regret not acting stronger and sooner.
Its time for Americans to care about our security and safety and quit dreaming of living in an ideal world where everyone will get along. That’s never going to happen. If you believe for a second that Islam is a peaceful religion you are terribly misinformed and ignorant of history.
Thank God President Bush doesn’t make decisions based on polls and pundits opinions.

2. We still have the opportunity to make a profound change in the world by defeating the terrorists. Imagine a world where terrorists are afraid to kill innocents because of the world’s forceful response.

Until we do this, nothing decisive will happen, and events will continue to control us.

So George Bush is the worst president in history. O.K. If you like a lying, sex-crazed (for young interns), adultress, then I guess you wouldn’t like a president who has built up our economy, protected us from terrorism (which has been proven that Clinton did nothing when he knew we were being targeted), protects the unborn, believes in a higher Being (Clinton only believes in Clinton). I don’t have any respect for the mainstream liberal media who continue to lie, twist the truth, add their own personal liberalism to the news, etc. They are pathetic in my estimation. George Bush has made mistakes. Bill Clinton made mistakes. The next President will make mistakes. Get over it!

Bush’s mistake is on placing crippling “rules of engagement” on our troops making it impossible for them to win the war. Allow the men to fight or don’t ask them to in the first place. A perfectly winnable war has been squandered to the alter of political correctness. Disgusting!

It will be an interesting election in 2008. The Republicans under Bush have lost their base do to his illegal invasion (immgration) policy and the Democrats have lost their base due to their not ending the Iraq war now that they control both houses of the Congress.
It could boil down to which base is madder at their party. The Democratic candidates are sprinting to the left and the Republican candidates are trying their best to ignore Bush’s efforts to turn this country into a Latino majority society.

Most think a military should be docile. Well, inaction begets threat.
We need to hope that the Iraqi people can find common ground. That will bring peace.
Peace through strength.
Although, I admit we probably should’ve gotten Saddam in ’91. Even if we don’t agree with the mission, we must support our forces objectives.

To a great extent Dowd is correct, Bush’s supporters are tired of his capitulation to the Liberals and Democrats. Bush is definitely NOT a Conservative, and his only compassion is to compromise with the Democrats – on everything, that is his BIGGEST mistake.
When you send the Military into war, we all must expect them to kill people and break things. You cannot fight and win a war when you rebuild as you destruct – what an unbelievable stupid approach. If this “troop surge” is not authorized to kill and destroy without fear of repercussions in an all-out effort to win, then it will be fruitless.
Mr. Bush, be the Commander-in-Chief, command our troops to win – now!

It’s quite obvious from the numerous juvenile tirades posted here that Democrats and other miscellaneous liberals have no idea what they are talking about. Perhaps I can inject some facts into this discussion (if, in all honesty, it can be called a discussion).
For example, our friend “Chuck” declared:
“…[D]on’t advocate sending our precious troops into yet another Republican created bloodbath.”
Which previous “Republican created bloodbath” were you referencing, Chuck? Perhaps it’s time you read a little history. The total casualties and battle deaths from all previous “Republican” wars (American wars begun under Republican presidents) during the last 110 years (according to World Almanac [1994], & CNN, as of Feb. 14) total 31,527 and 3,662, respectively. The same figures for “Democrat” wars are 1,747,278 and 426,664, respectively.
In other words, according to World Almanac & CNN (not Fox News, for all of you conspiracy theorists ;>), Democrat presidents planted 117 dedicated American servicemen in Arlington (and other locations), for every ONE serviceman who died during a supposed “Republican bloodbath.”
Allow me to suggest that you “flush out your head gear, new guy…”

I didn’t vote in 2000 and 2004 because I despised all three candidates. Hindsight is 20/20. I would vote for Gore and Kerry in a heartbeat knowing what I know now.
Bush is reckless in his policy making as evidenced by his foray into Iraq. Regardless of what the non-thinking neocons say, Bush sold this war on the basis of the WMD. There are no WMDs. His credibility is gone. That is how his bond is lost with the people. Now he wants support to invade Iran. He is reckless and has no credibility…I doubt he will get much support out of anybody.
Lastly, the U.S. tried to build a better world for future generations but his adventurism has destroyed that dream. I can’t believe it but I have gone from being a staunch Reagan supporter to supporting anybody that opposes U.S. actions anywhere. Please China, Russia, Venezuela, and India. Flex your power to stop this insanity. We need to be isolationists so we no longer hurt anybody. Remember: we have already killed over 650,000 Iraqis since we invaded; THEIR LIFE IS NOT BETTER WITHOUT SADDAM!!!!!!

Posted by: Jeff | February 15, 2007, 5:20 pm 5:20 pm

We have lost a little over 3000 military personnel in almost four years in the war on terror. We lost more American citizens than that in one day on 9/11. If the terrorists are allowed to return to attacking us directly, significant loss of civilian life in the US would dwarf our current military losses. Look at what happened to the Israelis during the Palestinian intifada and extrapolate. I don’t think that most Americans are interested in going there.
Our military personnel are far from being sitting ducks. They have killed and captured far more terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan than they have taken in the form of casualties. By all measures, the loss of life by our military in this war has been minimal. In addition, by all objective measures, security in this country has been very good since 9/11. Where is the objective evidence that refutes this fact? Pointing to imagined future attacks is meaningless. The only thing that matters is the reality on the ground and that shows that we have been well protected from terror attacks since 9/11.
Our borders have been porous for a very long time. Bush inherited this problem and has proposed what he believes will help identify and better control the influx of illegal aliens into this country. The fact that we can’t seem to find a consensus solution in Congress is not his fault. If you want to blame someone for lack of action in this area, blame your Congressman and Senators.
As far as WMDs in Iraq goes, what part of “everyone including Bush thought that he had them before the war” don’t you understand? Go back and see what everyone was saying back then. It was the same as what Bush was saying. Bush may be a determined man, but he never had the power to deceive everyone here and abroad concerning this issue. Even Saddam thought that he had them. So why would Bush believe something different?
I grow tired of the Bush-hating crowd. This type of mindless hate solves nothing and poisons almost everything that it touches. People who continue such destructive behavior need to grow up and learn to smell the roses. Just like the TET offensive in Vietnam, we are in fact winning the war against Islamic extremism and can only be defeated by our blind and thoughtless ignorance.

As someone who supported GW Bush and voted for him in 2004, I have come to loathe and despise him.
- We have the largest continuous deficit in history and the largest debt in history.
- He refuses to enforce our immigration laws or to do anything about illegal immigration.
- He is openly a globalist and wants total open borders.
- He does nothing about our deficit, spending like crazy. He obviously does not care.
- He does not care about our own industrial base. Doing whatever he can to send jobs and industry overseas.
- Six years since 911 and our borders, ports and airports have seen very little significant increase in security.
- Kisses up to the Mexican government over the plight of the American people.
- IRAQ!!! What else needs to be said here? War is a violent business and should be avoided at all costs unless you have no choice. And once you make the choice to go to war, you fight it to win at all costs. You should never try to conduct a limited war, especially letting the politicians run the battlefield. A total fiasco is Iraq!
- Destroyed most goodwill from the rest of the world towards the US.
- Tarnished America’s reputation beyond anything I thought possible.
I cannot stomach to listen to him anymore. His arrogance, pompasity and stupid grin just me me angry anymore.
The worst American president in history. The stupidest American president in history. And yet, he just goes forward with whatever agenda he has. And I still don’t know exactly what that is. Whatever his agenda, the only consistent items I can pick out are his blowing off the American people and caring more about his rich friends, foreign and domestic.
One thing for sure, George W. Bush, does not give one damn about the American people or the founding principles of our country. GW was born rich, grew up rich, lives rich and has never had to worry about how he was going to pay this months expenses. GW has no context in which he undestands on thing about the American people.
He is a lost individual with no morals, in control of one of the world’s most powerful arsenals. That is how this former GW voter sees George Bush Jr. today. A loathesome and despicable man!

..We thought ourselves noble as we allowed our freedom of speech to destroy the society we proudly presented to the world. The rotten fungus began at the fringe as it slowly ate to the core and into the religion that prompted the exodus from the old world. “Nay say we, tis better to die and die we shall, than to have the speech of a traitor taken away” Go into the night and never return John Kerry, Ted Kennedy and Nancy P. Go and run with your brethern the Ostrich Mr. Murtha. for George Bush was the voice that delivered the cold hard truth and delivered the cold hard steel. A paper curtain has gone up over this great country, on one side sits the revisionists that cloak themselves in thought, and to the right of this bill sits the righteous that take up the sword to defend the nation. Hold your tongue and steady your hand as the devil wears a turban and pulls the strings of the willing.

The President has done the best job he could with the info he had. All naysayers remember, most of the worlds intelligence services believed the WMD theory. Wait until Iran gets a nuclear device and gives it to a nut that blows an American city up. Of course this will be the Presidnts fault beacause he failed to protect us.
Especially since the democrat party offered so many helpful ideas and new laws. Like stopping illegal wire tapping of terrorist phone calls in the US and trying to cut funding for our troops in the field ala Murtha. I just hope we don’t get stuck with some hippie wacko President that would try to talk peace with the jhihadis or give this nations sovereign rights over to the UN.

Posted by: Mike Bonin | February 15, 2007, 5:30 pm 5:30 pm

So much rhetoric here…it’s sad.
First, Bush didn’t lie about the war on terror so Congress would give him authority to invade Iraq. Arguments that begin with “Bush lied” are not worth reading unless the poster can prove the lie. The intelligence reports of WMDs were scrutinized by both parties and deemed to be accurate at the time.
Second, the statement of Iraq being a “debacle” or that we’re “losing the war” is an ill-informed statement. The military isn’t losing any of the battles in Iraq and the total troop loss in Iraq is very low, considering how long we’ve been there. In one year, we lose over 17,000 Americans in drunk driving accidents. We have lost just over 3000 troops in four years.
Third, there’s no hidden “agenda” in what Bush is trying to accomplish. There may be hidden “agenda” in the way the war has been reported and there is almost certainly a hidden “agenda” in the way our legislative branch has reacted to the war. That concept alone, sides me with the Administration.
I think Bush is authentic and he’s gotten a raw deal in the media. Even the immigration situation, where Bush hung himself out to dry, he did so because he thought he was doing the right thing. I just have a hard time getting too riled up over the perceived “mistakes” that were made when the guy at the top has put all of his effort and energy into making this a better nation. I wish all politicians had the same desire.

Everyone keeps posting about Bush’s fiasco in Iraq. Well, an even worse legacy will be the wholesale offshoring of American jobs and technology. How many people realize that, under Bush’s watch, we have more than 4 million Chinese and Indian “guest workers” as engineers, that while unemployment for American engineers is at an all time high, with more than 40% of engineers age 45 and older unemployed, nine out of every ten new engineering jobs *in this country* goes to a foreign worker (who makes on average $10,000 a year less than their Amercian counterpart AND works an average 65 hour work week without any overtime compensation whatsoever; essentially, these guest workers are indentured servants, slaves). Not only that, slightly more than 3 out of every ten new jobs announced under Bush went to foreign workers and half, 5 out of ten, of those new jobs paid less than $10 an hour and had no benefits….those are the jobs that American citizens got. George Bush will go down in history, not just as a failure, but as the man who headed up a group of self serving thugs who oversaw the complete destruction of the United States.

Posted by: Mike Brooks | February 15, 2007, 5:42 pm 5:42 pm

A man and his crew who skewed evidence in order to support their agenda for invading Iraq…nice going Bush. First, it was WMD’s. Then when that didn’t sell, it was “We need to spread democracy. Those folks are living under an evil dictator.” If people who live under dictators need to be freed, then why haven’t we taken care of our neighbors in Cuba?

It seems to be time for a good ol’ fashioned political cleansing right here in the USA. The liberal agenda consistently violates the trust of the American good and unnecessarily endangers the US military and the homeland. Sounds like treason and sedition to me. Time for the libs to go. They have done nothing to build or protect this country and have very little cause for claim. Either leave or have leave forced upon you. If the cowards in the American government have no thrust to carry out justice than others will have to do the heavy lifting.

Hate, Hate, Hate is most of the comments on this subject. No one, including congress it seems is willing to stand up for what they know is the truth — those hate mongers in Irag, Iran and elsewhere are going to stick us again and then we will see hopefully, the dem’s standup and fight instead of passing non-inding resolutions against the War in Irag and against this President.
Time will tell who is correct on this issue — which I dare say will be in favor of this present President. Mistakes have been made, yes, but in what war have not large mistakes been made that cost alot more American lives than we have lost in Irag.
Thanks!

I don’t think the bond is broken – but it is severely strained. I wish he would close our borders and start deporting illegal aliens. While he continues to say you can’t deport 11 million people, you can at least make a start. We might not get them all, but we can sure make a dent. After awhile, potential illegals might just get the point and realize they aren’t welcome. Who knows, they might even stay home!
As far as the Iraq battle is concerned, we should just turn the whole place into a glass factory. No matter how many times the president says that Islam is a peaceful religion, that doesn’t make it so.
I voted for President Bush in 2000 and in 2004. If I knew then what I know today, I would still vote for him. The alternatives were just too scary.
Until something gets done about those two areas, my dollars will stay in my pocket. The Republican Party might as well save their phone calls.

The same media (hello ABC) who complained we didn’t finish the job in the first Gulf War, now complain we’re now trying to finish that war.
I don’t know how they report their hate with a straight face.
I’m embarrassed of how weak Bush has been, but thank God I’m not a democrat. They’re traitors.

America is a ghetto dump filled with so-called “Christians” and ignorant fools. All you people writing into this talkback are pathetic and America deserves to go down the toilet thanks to the uneducated ignorance of its people. Once a great nation, now a fat, lazy, selfish bunch of pseudoChristian fools. At least you got your SUV and your cheap gas, while exploiting the global environment and treating the rest of the planet with contempt. You get what you give. Nice one you Republican Bush loving idiots. Thomas Jefferson thought the American people would be smart enough to rise up and have a little revolution every so often, but Bush/Cheney and all these rightwing morons have destroyed your minds with their empty rhetoric. You should stop putting your “support our troops” magnets on your giant gas sucking SUV and tell your all volunteer citizen soldier neighbor the truth that he/she is NOT a hero, but a perpetrator.

Can everyone NOT diatribe this or make this a one issue discussion? Worst President in history? PLEASE! Vietnam by EVERY measure was worse than Iraq II. Who got us entrenched? Kennedy and Johnson. Are they remembered as horrible? The economy is firing on all cylinders, REAL wages are outpacing inflation, and minority home ownership is at record PERCENTAGES. Does he get credit for that? No, and neither do you blame Carter for the worst times since the Great Depression. The final chapter on Iraq II will not be written for 10 years or more. As for blaming the GOP for being corrupt and inept, there is enough to go around in both parties. Or do I need to mention Patrick Kennedy, John Murtha, or Rep Jefferson?

Amazing how many people in the US trade freedom for security. First because they constantly imply the people of Iraq were better off under the tyrany of Saddam because “at least they could goto work and live in peace”. Then they surrender all kinds of rights in order to protect us from the “Terrorist” when historically tyranical governments are responcible for 40% of all human suffering, behind religion which is responcible for 50%.

The Bush presidency is severely flawed; I can’t see how a reasonable person could disagree with that. It appears as if his administration cannot articulate a clear message to the public. For example, consider the Iranian-weapons-to-Iraqi-insurgents situation. There are two or three different scenarios, depending on who you listen to. How are we suppose to know who or what to believe? It’s stupefying!

To all those who have commented in a negative manner against the President, calling him a murderer to a liar, should all be placed in a bag and beaten senseless. (I know you have the right to say whatever you want, but so do I) You have all forgotten what happen on 9/11/01. People like Doug Thoms are the main reason why our enemy keeps fighting and holding on. They know if they hide behind children long enough eventually the small minority of bleeding heart screw-up hippies in this country will come out of their drug induced states of peace filled lovins to tell the rest of this country what we should do. Which in their lame brain heads is to never fight, never stand up, and in the end they will say that that every bad thing that happens in this world is the Fault of the greedy USA. People like Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Jane Fonda think they have some moral authority over everyone else. I wish the drive-by media would ask them just once if they believe in anything beside themselves.
The President will keep playing nice but I will not. All of you are un-American and only wish one thing for this country and that is defeat. Hollywood in general is full of a bunch of self-indulged hypocrites that on one hand want your every last dollar for their lame movies, but then turn around and tell us all that we all need to share. As they sit in their mansions and fly around in private jets, they state that there are poor people suffering in the world. You know what, Who Cares! Yes I said who cares, help out those that have nothing if you can, but the socialist and communist like Jane Fonda want to take from those that have it and give to those who are lazy and uninspired.
The socialists of this country like Hillary Clinton are going to take this country if they can and turn it into Europe or worse. They want to redistribute all the wealth of those that work hard and give to those that have nothing. Forget the fact that those that have nothing are not willing to stand up for themselves and DO something to change their own life’s stance. It makes me sick to my stomach to hear about socialized health care or higher taxes for those that are rich. (According to John Edwards that is anyone making above $200,000) The liberals in this country are so guilt ridden from things that happened 100, 200 or more years ago, that they feel it necessary to make anyone that is successful or white feel unworthy. I have never been a PC person, but will do my best going forward to be as un-PC as possible. Hopefully I will run into a left wing nut job and they will actually have the guts to say something to me. (Probably not since most if not all liberals are scared little pieces of crap)

George Bush…” may have lost his bonds with the American people” is the understatement of the year. He is even reviled here in the reddest of red states. He has betrayed every conservative value known to man. He is the worst president in history, and I predict he will become even more reviled as the damage he has done to our country, our economy, and our security is revealed in the years to come. I ask one question: Who has benefitted from the war in Iraq? Follow the money: the defense contractors. $300 billion and counting. Cheney and his warmonger pals are laughing all the way to the bank.

I just got back from Vietnam..As a Vet this was a bit of a traumatic experience for me, but a trip I wanted to make. I visited a couple of museum, and was shocked to find out, both from NATO and UN, that the Vietnamese civilian casualty for that war was 3 millions people. I bet you none of you pro war guys out there (most of you probably never did serve…) were not aware of that fact. Now do any of you know the number of woman and children that have died in Iraq since we invaded the country? I guess fighting “Evil” has a price even if it means to be more “Evil” in the process or does it?

I can only hope that those whom write posts praising the work of George Bush can just for a moment look at the negative impact this presidency has had on the world. Even the brightest painted scenario for this presidency will reflect graft, incompetence, devicive tactics and greed. These are dark days for America. I just wish there was true accountability for this administration…And those that support it.

Let’s at least be accurate when you describe President Bush’s approval ratings. Someone commented that he is below 30%, well in most polls he is in the mid-30′s, but one of the most accurate pollsters has him at 42%.
rasmussenreports
President Bush Job Approval
February 15, 2007
Forty-two percent (42%) of Americans approve of the way that George W. Bush is performing his role as President. Fifty-five percent (55%) disapprove. (see comments on comparing Approval Ratings from different polling firms). Those figures include 19% who strong approve of the President’s performance and 41% who strongly disapprove.

The article highlights Bush’s real problem. It is his advisors who are out of touch, starting with Karl Rove and obviously including this “guru” who just got wind of the fact that most Americans are not listening to George anymore. He’s an intransigent, one-trick pony who can’t adjust to changing conditions. In his first administration, he demonstrated much greater balance. Once he was reelected, the media began to say it was the Christian Right who put him in office again, these people who usually don’t even bother to vote, and Bush obviously believed it. Right off the bat, almost, he lost all semblance of good judgement. Not only has the occupation of Iraq gone into the commode, but Bush has refused to address domestic problems that won’t go away, such as the way millions of greedy, incompetent doctors and dentists serve only the rich and the upper middle class and blatantly rip off everyone else, or the price of gasoline, which has nothing to do with the current availability of the refined product OR the price of oil. We could conserve on millions of gallons of gas per day if someone would just lower the speed limits on highways and interstates by a mere ten miles per hour and dare to suggest that Americans start buying smaller cars again or using alternate forms of transport more often, but none of these irresponsible representatives will dare to suggest it. Bush is nothing but a shill for Big Business and everyone who is awake knows it by now. In 2006, the country handed over most power to the Democrats again, and as we all know, they are nothing but stooges for Big Labor. They were supposed to get us out of Iraq and investigate Bush’s domestic spying program, but what have they done so far? Nada. America, as a country, is a has been society. We’ve spent so many years suppressing good ideas and killing off all of our creative people, while everyone strives to emulate “family values,” that we no longer understand how to think, yet alone how to live. George Bush, this clown advisor, and all the rest of you morons in positions of prestige and influence, bringing down a good salary because of your connections, your ability to lie, cheat, and steal, and the mere fact that you have 2.2 kids and a shallow, acquisitive wife to support, are the real problem. The whole bunch of you ought to be fired. It’s not just Bush’s fault. It’s all your faults.

As for President Bush’s legacy and what he has done that I support:
1) Reshaped the Supreme Court
2) Over five years without a terrorist attack on U.S. soil.
3) Strong Economy for my family and as the only parent who works as a teacher, I am not wealthy.
4) Able to purchase a home at historic low interest rate.
5) Tax Cuts
6) Execution of the mass murderer Saddam Hussein.
7) Removed the Taliban
8) Diverse Cabinet appointments including Powell, Rice, Gonzalez, etc.
Has he been perfect, certainly not, but the worst President ever? Come on, please hit the textbooks and come up with a better response than that.
Not to mention, we will really not know how good or bad he was until several decades down the road.
What happens in regard to terrorist attacks, Iraq, Iran, the economy, etc. in the subsequent administrations.

Hey, I’m guilty myself – I went from W basher to W supporter, cause at the end of the day, for better or for worse, the guy gets stuff done.
Let’s say congress actually does something significant (yeah right) to change the course of the war on terror. In 2 years we may all be calling for their heads.
On the other hand, he is the president and I support him now that I see he is a doer and not a talker.
Either way, more people will die. That is a fact.

Following Matt Dowd’s successful work reelecting of President Bush in 2004 he took up a guest lecturer position at the University of Texas, teaching a class called U.S. election and the Media. I was enrolled in this class, which seemed to be a victory tour touting his election strategies and advocating that President Bush and the Republican majority controlled public policy because unlike the Democrats the Republicans were not all caught up with building a relationship or consensuses, treating the inter working of government like a big business, focused on an idea called A.R.M.D (Audience Research Message Delivery), which was their method to achieving victory in 2000 and 2004 as well as selling the war. This “gut bond” he speaks of was in reality a persona created by endless focus group testing and spinning of the facts. The truth is it seems now Mr. Dowd can’t spin the harsh realities anymore and rather then go down with ship he created, he is jumping over board. Sad but true although it not his first time, he was a democratic strategist in Texas prior to jumping on the Bush band wagon when Karl Rove took him and Ann Richard down in 1998. Flip flopper!

This is in response to James A. Webster.
I know John Gault. I think our President also knows who he is. The problem is that he is in the same place Hank Reardon was – trying so hard to keep things going when all along he had only to listen to his inner voice.
Remember: When your premise doesn’t make sense, your best bet is to check that premise. It is probably wrong.
The best you can do is to not help them in their ignorance. Withold your donations – whether they be time or money.
Hang in there James A. Webster – I see John Gault in some of our 20-somethings. We haven’t lost him.

The economy is in the strongest state it has been in since the mid-80s, despite 9/11, the war, the corporate scandals and the recession that Clinton behind.
I wish people would stop referring to the death count in Iraq. Of course people die. It is a war. It is a terrible thing and very tragic, but the success of a war cannot be measured by the death count.
During his time, Abe Lincoln was a thoroughly hated president. People thought him to be the worst. 600,000 American lives were lost during the Civil War (since it seems you people like to count deaths) and everyone was against him. People were telling him to stop fighting. His entire cabinet was advising him to give in to the South and forget about restricting trade (ending slavery). He was a fool for developing the Emancipation Proclaimation. He was then labeled the “worst President of all time.” It turned out that his persistance was a good idea, regardless of what the “popular” thing to do was.
Sounds familiar.

Bush’s bonds are not for Americans. It is clear Bush is a globalist. How can he be serious about security when our borders are wide open, prisons overcrowded, TB on the rise etc. I believe the Iraqi war for most of us is just a diversion; facts indicate the main issue is the porous border and 15 million illegal aliens and growing. If it keeps up our language, culture and way of life will surely change. The media and even Congress are in on this diversion.

Posted by: Riley | February 15, 2007, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm

Bush has lost whatever bond he had with the vast majority of people because the only part of the word “conservative” relevant to him is “con.” He followed Bill Clinton on every policy other than moderation on commitment of U.S. troops and money to war and on balancing the budget. Bill Clinton is well to the right of George Bush despite the rhetoric.
Bush is a big-spending, borrow and delayed tax and spend, open border, America-dissolving, affirmative racism loving arrogant man. I have a token of admiration for him on his tenacity in Iraq despite his incompetence in prosecuting the war.
His biggest legacy will be the besmirchment of what it means to be a conservative and a Republican. 9/11 only happened in the first place because he refused to guard the borders… 19 of the 20 hijackers were illegal immigrants. What can be more racist than saying you can’t make it in your own country unless you have enough white people to help you out.
Ah I could go on for hours about this man’s hypocrisy and speciousness.

Posted by: Entropico | February 15, 2007, 8:29 pm 8:29 pm

Just a few observations:
1. The “Liberal Media” that you conservatives love to bash is a MYTH. The mainstream media is now onwned and controlled by large corporations which make lots of money from Bush and his policies, they are anything but liberal.
2. Bush has been destroying our country ever since he got into office. Those things that once made America unique, a “shining city on a hill”, have been destroyed by his many unconstitutional policies: torture, habeus corpus, domestic spying, wiretapping, etc, etc.
Those of you willing to give up our freedoms because you’re scared of the “islamo-fascists”, are the real traitors to America (if anyone should leave the country, it should be you)!!
3. There is NO way to “win’ in Iraq! Why, because the war was already won (by us!) after the first 3 weeks! What is going on now in Iraq is an OCCUPATION. The only way to win an occupation is to either: a) win the hearts and minds of the people (too late for that now!), or b) become a brutal police state (like the Nazi’s did in France, etc). The second would require many more soldiers to implement, soldiers we just don’t have. The reason Bush has no real strategy to WIN in Iraq is that the goal is to occupy Iraq until we can install a puppet government, which will let us have our permanent (“enduring”) military bases and our oil contracts.

Bush is incoherent and inarticulate and has failed to be honest and forthright with the American People. The only reason that he has lasted this long was 911 and the fear it instilled in white America. The Republican Party calls itself the “White” party according to Pat Buchanan.
The media including Fox News, the White House news corp. and others gave Bush a pass for fear of being called unpatriotic.
The Democrats should fund the money for our troops in harms way, but should add a rider to reinstate the draft to distribute the burden on our National Guard and Army reserves. Everyone should sacrifice!

This administration has only done one thing aggressively, and that is make war. It has not pursued any other major issue (ie, social security, education, polution, medical insurance costs, border security, etc.) other than the infamous “War on Terror.”
When you finally get beyond the loud rhetoric the conservative media and administration mouthpieces sling, you begin to realize the actions don’t actually engage to match.
This man has initiated the kind of bloodshed only the worst tyrants in history have bestowed upon the world.
Let’s see.
Steps on those who don’t have the money or power in favor of those who do.
Claims that respecting our brave soldiers is best done by keeping them in harms way and away from their families for second or even a third tour in Iraq/Afghanistan.
Refuses to engage on the issue of border security, effectively flooding our economy with a plentiful source of cheap labor, while pretending our security is important enough to send others children to die for.
Is too stubborn to talk to countries he has issue with, choosing rather to be provoking and threatening.
Rolled back EPA standards in an effort to ensure better profits for major industry.
Ignored a trade deficite that set another record last month.
Has allowed our national debt to balloon to three years worth of Gross Domestic Product. (Can you imagine running up three years salary worth of CC debt?)

When a Democrat is elected President in 2008, that person should send a nice thank you note to Bush. No one has done more to tarnish the Republican party.
Dowd is right. It’s over. The Dear George letter was the November election. The polls show that the American people no longer support Bush.
Whether Bush is right or wrong at this point doesn’t matter. Once love has gone, even little things cannot be overlooked. And they will not be overlooked.
Anyone who hates and fears Democratic control of the White House and Congress has Bush to thank for his or her fate.

What saddens me the most about this blog is the fact that people can’t seem to see past their political affiliations. Bush’s mistakes (and that of all past presidents for that matter) affect ALL of us as humans, not just as Democratics or Republicans.
Bush doesn’t see people as humans, but merely dispensible peons to carry out his agenda. He sent us to Iraq to finish a war that his father wasn’t man enough to finish himself.

Matthew Dowd and other republicans that held Bush’s hand until his popularity levels dropped are just as bad or worse than he is. Dowd needs to shut up or admit that he himself was wrong to ever support this man of any of his policies. All the enablers including the democrats that did need to fess up.
But most democrats that gave Bush the power to go to war were quick to criticize his handling even before the invasion. People need to look at the timelines on when people first criticized Bush. Some did so when it was not popular. Most republicans did not get on the bandwagon until recently. They don’t count.

Man, you people are so pathetic. All I can say is that I have been able to sleep for the most part knowing that Bush and co are trying to do their best to protect us from what happened during 9-11. So quick are you to criticize and make fun of a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders and no one to help carry the weight.
Maybe you people need to support this country and our leaders with the same intensity you bash it now. Freedom of speech is great, but remember, it always shows who the traitors are.

Dowd is pathetic. It is ok for him to get a guy re-elected whose policies resulted in 3,000 deaths and 10,000s of injuries to soldiers, but when his son is deployed, he rejects it.
If he is really offended by Bush, why doesn’t he give back the fees he earned. My bet is he won’t part with the blood money.
And he should apologize for doing a disservice to his country for being a Chief Strategist for a man about whom he was already having doubts. Instead of shielding the intersanctum of the White House, he should do his country a service by exposing, and possibly changing, the dysfunctional inner workings of the White House.
It is a great example of how this President and the Republican Party as he has shaped it fully embraces hypocrisy, a hypocrisy that thinks its ok for a tragedy to befall some else (who is usually less fortunate) but it cannot happen to them.
