Carter Endorses Gore, Says Former Veep Can Win More Than Oscars
ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos Reports: In an exclusive interview with former President Jimmy Carter set to air on Sunday’s "This Week with George Stephanopoulos", Carter lavished praise on "(his) favorite Democrat) former Vice President Al Gore.
Carter told ABC News, "If Al should decide to run — which I’m afraid he won’t — I would support Al Gore."
The former Democratic President asserted Gore could accomplish much more in the White House than he ever could as a private citizen, saying to Stephanopoulos, "His burning issue now is global warming and preventing it. He can do infinitely more to accomplish that goal as in the incumbent in the White House, than he can making even movies that get — you know, that get Oscars."
"An Inconvenient Truth", a documentary based on a global warming lecture Gore has delivered around the world, is nominated for an Academy Award and the former Vice President will walk the red carpet at the Oscars this Sunday.
Despite public pressure from Carter and others, the former President does not believe Gore will make a second bid for the White House saying, "I don’t think he will. I’ve put so much pressure on Al to run that he’s almost gotten aggravated with me."
Carter told Stephanopoulos that he had not called Gore "lately" adding, "He almost told me, the last time I talked, ‘Don’t call me anymore.’"
Carter joked that Gore had offered to support him in 2008 and referred to Gore as "my favorite" in the interview, concluding, "I really have not expressed any public approval or endorsement or preference for any of the Democratic candidates except (Gore)."

Oh my God, just based on the fact that the “Man” is a global warming activist is frighting. The biggest terroists that we need to face these days are the activist, the Health and Safety freaks, Big Pharma, and those that think that their way of thinking are enough to keep eroding our “Rights.” Go back to farming Mr. Carter you’ve done enough damage to this country already by pardoning “Cowards.” The blood of our brothers are still soaking the grounds and I in turn would give my blood so that their Honor can be Blessed.

Yes, Carter screwed up when he built military bases in the Middle East and we are still paying for that mistake.
I believe he is now truly a man of peace and thats a legacy he can be proud of. Do you think history will remember our current President with kindness? He’s just a shill for Big Business and a poster boy for the military-industrial complex.

While I do think Carter needs to shut his mouth, Global warming is an issue and if you don’t think it is, you need to go in for a round of electroshock. if anything we need to look to undo the mess this current administration has created and which will easily go down as one of the worst administrations in us history. The stuff these guys have pulled is mindblowing to me.

I agree with Carter. Al Gore should run for president. He’s smart, an environmental activist (can’t see how this can be construed as being negative or frightening), he has good family values, he has experience, and he should have been president in 2000! Believe it or not, I think he is waiting for his nobel peace prize award and then he will annouce he is running for president. Go Al!!!

How in the world does Jimmy Carter come to believe he’s now a “kingmaker”. I’m a liberal-progressive and a supporter of the Democrat party, save for in 1980 and 1984. Does this abject failure who ushered in Khoumeini and did nothing while his “Theofacsist” replacement for the Shah reigned over 444 days of “America Held Hostage”. And he now writes sophomoric tripe about “Our Endangered Values”, siezing on the chance to rub in the fact that we finally have a worse president, whose Middle East woes can be traced to Carter’s utopian notion that self determination justified precipitating the Shah’s fall for the people’s will for the Ayatollah.
And, I had to add this: Carter ran on imputing the crimes of Nixon on the most decent of men, Ford. “I can give you a government … that’s filled with LOVE, competence and compassion.”
Since his failure on the presidential stage, the president of “LOVE” has been frantically trying to show his competence when relieved of the burdens of the oath of office.
Watching this silly man officiously injecting himself into state matters, making no-brainer pronouncements, and hurt his party by association is aggravating enough. But this hubristic delusion of ascent to kingmaker status goes over the top.
Jimmy Carter, anyone familiar with Al Gore knows he is the most qualified man to stand for the office you had no business holding. Al Gore is a man of deep conscience, with thorough knowledge of the matters comprising the rigors of the presidency. Don’t tarnish him by association with your failures and poor judgment
Posted by: Richard | February 23, 2007, 2:40 pm 2:40 pm
I’ve supported liberal-progressive causes and candidates from the Democrat party with the notable exception of Reagan v Carter. I saw the fuzzy, undefined peanut farmer coming when hearing the hypocrite effuse with such trype as “I can give you a government that’s honest and that’s FILLED WITH LOVE, competence, AND COMPASSION.”
Well, Reagan’s domestic program’s hurt many of our most vulnerable. But ideology be damned, he lead and deregulation and tax cuts unleashed our economic engine while monetary policy under Volker completed a tour de force in removing Jimmy’s “crisis of confidence” pep talk from memory.
Now this failed President, having penned a few sophormoric books, having a photo-op as part of Habitat for Humanity, and receiving a Nobel Prize that Anwar Sadat took a bullet for, seems to think he has risen to the heights of King-maker.
Anyone familiar with Al Gore’s personal qualities, background, depth of understanding of the gammut of matters attendant on the rigors presidency (No, not just global warming) should know he is the most qualified person ever to have sought that office and the most qualified person available to fill it now.
We do not need a failed president who I, with support from Joshua Maravchik in Feb. 2007 “Commentary” deem also our worst ex-president, tarnishing Al Gore by association. Jimmy Carter, I and others find you hurtful to the Democrat Party . Please don’t insert yourself into the election and especially, I beg you not to speak at the convention.

Carter may have been a so-so President at best by many people’s estimations – but he is easily our greatest living President and greatest ex-President for his work with stewarship of the earth and the promotion of fair and democratic elections around the globe.
If Carter endorsed Gore – Gore has my vote, should he choose to run, although he probably would have it regardless.
The world needs more Carters and Gores and fewer Bushs and Reagens.

Have you considered talking to his wife? Gore needs a diet and support from his family. As Dan Marino might say “hey look at me, I’m back to my campaining weight.” Seriously, the Clinton’s and Gore’s would need to summit and do it again the same as before. Oh, the nostalgia. Carter, Clinton, Gore, Obama, Richardson and Edwards should band together after the primaries to ensure the Republicans do not steal another election. They could all take key positions within our government and share in its success. Clinton, Gore or Obama = Pres & VP, Richardson = Secretary of State, Edwards = Attorney General, Carter = Mentor, Coach and Cheer Leader, America = return to leadership and respect worldwide.

Elect McCain or Guiliani or Clinton or Obama. They will not stop global warming. They will not get us out of the Middle East. They will not fix the healthcare system. They will not abolish our unfair trade agreements. And they are exactly who you, the American people, deserve.

Carter was no idiot nor was he the worst prez. The fact is he was trying to do good things for this country for the long run. Doing that caused some “suffering” in the short term. God knows we americans can’t handle THAT. If you think otherwise just look where all these so called “great” presidents have gotten us. They gave the people what they wanted. Gratification for the short term with disregard for the future.
Starting with Regan who ripped the solar panels off the White House roof and got us deep in bed with the OPEC and turned this country into a debtor nation. Good JOB!

Why would you attack a man of peace? Regardless of his administration look at what he has accomplished since then. The guy does more with his free time than any of you would even think about, and he does it for the benefit of others. A man with his amount of dedication and selflisness deserves to be heard (Nobel Peace Prize recepient at that!)
Carter didn’t usher in Khomeini anyhow, only someone silly would believe that. Our meddling with the right of Iran’s sovereignity and self-determinitation with Operation Ajax set that course into action.
What’s wrong with an activist anyways? Were our founding fathers not activists? Was Martin Luther King Jr not an activist? Was Gandhi not an activist?
Gore’s focus on the environment could free us from our reliance on oil (ONE of the reason why I’m here in Iraq) which would solve more than one of our problems, not to mention the big money that is playing puppeteer with our current presidency.
I say: Go for it Gore!

Carter is NOT the best ex-president ever. He has endorsed a number of fraudulent elections and helped tyrants consolidate their power. From Fujimori to Chavez, Haiti to Africa. His observers are a bunch of communists (I know, I’ve met some of them and debated a few and seen some of them in observations–not very sincere). Oh, and it’s no small thing: Carter is an ANTI SEMITE. Carter is for Gore? Then I KNOW I can’t vote for Al. The Unites States of America needs a LEADER to guide this country back onto the right track and there is not a single candidate yet that has the type leadership qualities that will be required past 2008.
Al Gore or Colin Powell are the ONLY people that that have a chance. ANY OTHER CANDIDATE will create the same problems that Bush has and the United States Of America as we know it today will no longer exist.

Many seem to forget that during those years of the Arab Oil boycott in 1973, Carter vehemently proposed major conservation and environmental controls in order to save the nation from oil dependence on foreign sources. He was ignored and even mocked by the press and the public who cringed at the costs. Now look at us, mired in an oil war, and spending money like water to get us out of the miserable hole we’re in globally. Thanks John q. public!

I particularly liked the “cowardly little weasel” comment in reference to a President who served in the military with distinction. Sounds oddly familiar to the cowardly John Kerry, the cowardly Senator Murtha, the cowardly congressman from Georgia who was crippled in the Vietnam war while neo-conservatives Bush, Cheney Wolfowitz, Libby et al were getting drunk at Happy Hour, flunking out of school and getting DWIs. The audacity of the neo-conservatives discrediting and calling Americans who fought for their country COWARDS is truly enlightening. Shut Up and Go Fight My Wars for ME!

GOD BLESS JIMMY CARTER!!
If we only listened to him back in ’77.
Jimmy Carter delivered this televised speech on April 18, 1977.
Tonight I want to have an unpleasant talk with you about a problem unprecedented in our history. With the exception of preventing war, this is the greatest challenge our country will face during our lifetimes. The energy crisis has not yet overwhelmed us, but it will if we do not act quickly.
It is a problem we will not solve in the next few years, and it is likely to get progressively worse through the rest of this century.
We must not be selfish or timid if we hope to have a decent world for our children and grandchildren.
We simply must balance our demand for energy with our rapidly shrinking resources. By acting now, we can control our future instead of letting the future control us…..
The citizens who insist on driving large, unnecessarily powerful cars must expect to pay more for that luxury.
We can be sure that all the special interest groups in the country will attack the part of this plan that affects them directly. They will say that sacrifice is fine, as long as other people do it, but that their sacrifice is unreasonable, or unfair, or harmful to the country. If they succeed, then the burden on the ordinary citizen, who is not organized into an interest group, would be crushing.
There should be only one test for this program: whether it will help our country.
Other generation of Americans have faced and mastered great challenges. I have faith that meeting this challenge will make our own lives even richer. If you will join me so that we can work together with patriotism and courage, we will again prove that our great nation can lead the world into an age of peace, independence and freedom.

He has said that he is just not at the point in his life right now to be President. Maybe not, but has anyone thought about him being Vice President again. Right now Hillary Rodham Clinton is the best candidate in the race. I think that it is time for another Clinton-Gore administration (with Hillary as President) and let him come back to claim the office he truly won in 2000, when Hillary has finished her second term.

Mr. Carter is indeed a respected statesman and America should be proud to count him as an ex-president. His presedency was tarnished because of the CIA orchestrated Iran hostage crisis. This was done to because Mr. Carter rightfully fired Senior Bush as head of CIA immediately after taking office. Bush called in favors he had built up over the years in the CIA and middle east to create the hostage crisis and increase the price of his filthy oil, his main business. He then promised Reagan that he could solve the problem if he was nominated vice president, hence the Iran contra and arms for hostage. Bush Sr also intentinally sabotaged another democratic president, Bill Clinton. George sent troups into Somalia the November after loosing to Bill for no good reason and we all know what happened. Mr. Carter tried to break the hold that Corporation had on our government and he became the loneliest president as a result. Thank you for caring about the citizens of America and the world Mr. President and your valiant service in the military. Please run for President Mr. Gore, your country need you.

Clearly Gore is the man of the hour.
He pegged both Iraq wars, he truely understands technology and Science. His speeches since 2000 have been spot on – outshing any other potential leader – plus he has stacks of experience – while being one of the few politicians with a relatively clean and honest track record.
The supposed negatives are either grossly distorted or vacuuous.
The negatives on all other contenders from both parties are very significant and troubling.

Carter was probably the smartest man to ever occupy the White House. It’s a shame he didn’t do very well – although he’s a long way from having been our worst president: an ‘honor’ reserved for our current president, without question. But while Carter didn’t do the best job when he was in the middle of it all; he’s done much better as a good man, now that he stands outside looking in.
And he’s right – Gore should run. There isn’t a better man or woman in either party – a better human being – who is within spitting distance of the presidency. I believe that Al Gore is a genuinely good man: the fire he’s endured has tempered and improved the man he was in 2000 – and he was the best choice then. Now, he is the stuff of legend.
If Gore runs, I’ll carry his coffee and make his cold calls. There isn’t anyone else in either party I’ll work for. Nobody else worth caring about. Nobody really worth a damn: just politicians, all of them.

Many previous politicians tend to support or encourage support of other people with same or similar values as their own. I am not surprised that Carter would support and encourages Gore to run again. In a way Gore is like Carter. And Carter is like Gore. The big question is, does the country want to have Gore as President? If so, and Gore decides to run, will he be a carbon copy of Carter? If I were everyone else, I would think long and hard about this. Some of the things Carter had done when he was President, we are still paying for it today. Think about it.

The fall of the Shah was not the result of actions by the Carter White House. The Shah’s rule was never legitimate. He overthrew an elected government and consolidated his dictatorial rule (with CIA support) in the Eisenhower era and his regime fell apart during the Nixon and Ford eras. America should never helped him seize power or been allied with his dictatorship. We are still paying for this foreign policy mistake and may never again have truly good relations with Iran.
The inflation crisis was the result of OPEC policies as they rippled thru the economy after the embargoes. The set-up for that situation developed over decades of oil industry actions and American foreign policy decisions. The worst development resulting from the inflation crisis was the collapse of usury laws concerning banking, credit cards, etc. We still need to go back to usury regulation for lending.
Gore would be a great President but like Carter I think he will not run in 2008. I am personally supporting Edwards although all the Democratic candidates are far superior to any of the likely Republican candidates.
Those denying global warming are fools or are making money from destroying the ecosystem of the planet. The economic costs of global warming will likely destroy the entire global economy. This is the greatest threat ever faced by modern man…. period!

Mr. gore violated his oath of office when he refused to authorize vote fraud in Florida, which gave us Bush and the subsequent wars. What reason would prompt a man who spent millions to become president, and then abdicate after he had won, by refusing to fight the Bush machine? Something fishy there, almost as if he knew disaster was imminent, and didn’t want to be on watch when it happened. Gore was always a reluctant politician, one got the sense he was a senator only because of his father. We need a strong leader who is not a sociopath like Bush/Cheney, and a leader who understands that more political games such as are being played by the current crop of pols will destroy the nation…

There´s no way Carter was a worse president than Bush number 2 has been. First off, many blame Carter for the economic woes of that time. Presidents have very little control over the economy. Second, Global Warming is real. If some people think calling Gore an envirnonmental activist is a bad thing, then call me the same thing. We need an inhabitable Earth dummies before any of that other material stuff like big homes and SUV´s matter.

Its so funny to see the comments of vile hatred at the beginning of these comments and realize that they are from professional Republican Party hacks that are paid to cruise the comments sections and mislead on facts. Carter was hardly the worse President, George Bush 41 & 43 have that award hands down and will probably hold that title for the rest of our lives. AL Gore should’ve been our President and I pray he runs again.

It’s a riot to read the posts of the many trolls heaping their rotting refuse on Jimmy Carter, when we have the WORST PREZNUT IN HISTORY ruling this once great nation.
Calling Jimmy names does NOT distract from the sad tragic facts surrounding the current FAILURE IN CHIEF!

President Carter’s endorsement of the man who received the most votes for President in 2000 is consistent with Carter’s principled position on world issues and his refusal to accept the status quo in American politics — ie. special interest corporate money decides elections.
Those who have attacked President Carter in this thread have the same analytical ability as those who support the current President who will undoubtedly go down in history as our worst President ever. It is appears that finally the American people have seen through the smokescreens, apin and personal attacks to view this administration as the most incompetent and corrupt in our lifetimes. Those who attack Carter and Gore in the comments above are among the 32% of the population who continue to support George w. Bush without regard to reality seen clearly now by the majority of our citizens. If they want to see real losers — look in the mirror.

Two biggest loosers in American history of politics..Carter – Gore
Both of which to out to be also major liars to push their own needs..Making money ..Clearly a low chapter in history..Never in history has an X President talk about the standing President during war time as Carter has done against Bush.He should be tried as a Traitor

Stephen Crockett, thanks for that insightful reminder of the historical setup for Carter’s administration. I wish more people would take a longer term view of our history and the implied patience it takes. Unfortunately, we are a nation of the sound bite and quick gratification and the instant poll. A.D.S. in the large.
It’s (almost) amusing to see people blame Carter of all people for perceived troubles today when Bush and co. are ignoring any of the priorities that a great nation should be paying attention to (energy independence, health care, loss of the middle class, …) and ensuring that we will be in the bottom of the economic pile in the next 20 years due to their bankrupting of our nation through the trillions that will ultimately be spent on this so-called “war on terrorism” and the selling of our assets to the countries of the Far East.
There’s going to be a lot of nostalgia for the Carter years by the time the Bush Dynasty is through with us.

This dialogue is good for us all. It’s embarrassing, sometimes, because we blurt our passions, but here they are in black and white. Even the haters are probably reading the other comments. Dialogue and education erode the full metal jacket, and the best dialogue is among those who disagree, but listen. That’s the whole American experiment.
What if Mr. Gore agreed to run in an Obama/Gore ticket? I think he has the humility to do that, and Mr. Cheney has assigned unprecedented power to the VP office. VP Gore could use that power to continue to make the environment his primary cause. He would also lend wisdom to Obama’s youth and vigor.

Go Gore!! I at least think that you are mostly honest and do care about America.
Look folks, no president is perfect…a few like Nixon are really bad and simply criminal; some are basically good people, but lack sack, like Carter; the seemingly-innocent, but somewhat brain-dead, Ford pardoned Nixon and thus kept to his secret deal so he could be vp & president; Reagan was a senile old man who was really dumb and had incredibly stupid policies, Pappa Bush, son of a Nazi sympathyzer, was controlled by “big oil” and Saudi princes, Clinton, a so-called liberal who brought in NAFTA and couldn’t keep his pecker out of a two-bit whore’s mouth, and finally, the most corrupt, criminal and stupid of them all, George Bush with his illegal pre-emptive war and hatred for American freedoms. I say cut off all their heads!! We need 100% public financing of elections. The people need to take back America from the corrupt politicians, lobbyists and their criminal backers, corporations. Viva la revolucíon!

Wasn’t Carter the one who warned us about enrgy shortages and too much dependence on foreign oil? Obviously ahead of his time, since most people preffered the feel-good ignorance of Reagan.
But it’s obvious now that Carter does more good every year than Bonzo did in his entire phony existance.

Hmm, let’s see the Democratic field continues to bloody each other at the start of the nation’s longest campaign for president unwittingly engaging in a policy of mutual assured destruction. Then an untarnished white knight with universal name recognition and sky high approval ratings comes in and takes the trophy. Make sure to watch Al Gore at the Oscars on Sunday night…

Anyone who categorically denies global warming is a sad pathetic fool. Just think, you are disagreeing with virtually every scientist on the planet. Oh yes; you know better than they do because it is nothing more than a liberal conspiracy. The right wing in this country is truly astounding. Stop politicizing global warming and say something intellegent for once in your life
I wish Al Gore would run. He is a thoughtful, intellegent person. This is in stark contrast to the simpleton warmonger we currently have. I think Obama or Edwards would also be fine. Not Hillary Clinton please; she is an opportunist.

Carter Pushing For Gore To Run

Posted by: Liberal Values | February 24, 2007, 3:20 pm 3:20 pm
You idealogues need to back up and attempt to view reality without tainting it with your perceived desired world. President Carter destroyed the US military and the CIA. He also enabled third world “liberation” movements which never actually liberate unless you believe in the dictatorship of the proletariat. As for Vice President Gore, what do you believe contribute more to global warming, inbred rednecks driving their pickups, soccer moms in their SUV’s, or could the world doubling it’s human population in the next 20 years, or perhaps 30% of the rainforest being cut down ever 10 years, or lastly the Red Chinese pouring out an ever increasing amount of pollution while the US shuts down their environmentally sound heavy industry? Think about it! The far left and the RINO republicans share the same goal of knocking down this great country so we’ll be ready to join the New World Order, one world government, or whatever you whant to call it.

President Carter needs to lie low and enjoy the rest fo his life. He tried to be a good President but it turned out to be a miserable 4 years. He’s done some good things since leaving office but recently has opened his mouth and said the wrong things. He needs to stay out of the political arena…his choices and decisions in politics are terrible! Al Gore, No way…I’d vote for Al Sharpton before I’d vote for Gore and trust me…I’d never vote for that idiot. VP Gore is a mean spirited man who has his own agenda for life and that is to appeal to people’s fears and tell them the world is going to burn up. The only way the world will burn up is if Jesus Christ himself makes it. Gore’s a loser!

Ah yes, “the only way.. is if JC himself makes it!” sez the Flat-Earth society. Wow. We don’t believe in that there sci-e-ence kerfluffle. It must be more comfortable for some to keep one’s head buried in the sand, but there’s an obvious and marked lack of oxygen to one’s brain in that circumstance, as clearly shown.
Amazing to me to see people say Gore is “mean-spirited” when the guy’s about to win an Oscar and Nobel Peace Prize for his work to help us all, simply amazing. Pray tell, how many of the current administration miscreants were even considered for such honors, as a comparison? Mmmmm nope, I’d say we’re seeing true “mean-spirited” people shown to us during the Libby trial.
More solid proof, in addition to shockingly ignorant Carter information posted here by others, that people believe what they WANT to believe, facts be damned.

There have been many worst presidents in History. What about Hoover for instance? or Dubya? or Buchanan? All Presidents in the last 150 years and all left/leaving a dreaful legacy. Lets just hope there is an FDR or a Lincoln somewhere, and as I see it only Gore or Obama come anywhere near it right now, of the possible candidates.

Worse President in history? Thats not a nice thing to say about Jimmy Carter. Say what you’d like, but Carter did not drag our country into unnecessary wars, wasting hundreds of billions of American dollars. Carter did not drag us into an unnecessary war, costing the lives of three thousand + soliders, not to mentions tens of thousands of American casualties. Carter did not create a civil war in the second largest oil provider in the world. Carter did not provide tax breaks for the wealthy while the middle class continued to shrink. So be careful on who you all label the “worse president” and what not – anything said negatively about Carter must be amplified exponentially in a discussion on G.W. Bush.
Posted by: truth | February 24, 2007, 6:56 pm 6:56 pm
Gore is not appealing to people’s fears. He is actually trying to do something constructive to avert a potentially dire situation.
Every scientist in the world who studies this phenomenam is convinced that global warming is caused by us and it is a serious threat. They are actually trying to do something to help the world. It is so disheartening that right wingers continue to politicize a scientific issue.
Then again, people with this mind set probably still think the world is flat and only 6000 years old.
It is hard to believe that in a country like the United States, where educational opportunities abound, there is so much ignorance.
People who support Al Gore are idealogues?!!! Al Gore is mean spirited?
Go back to Fox news and Rush Limbaugh.
Frightening.

The past 6 years(wasted years) has been used by God to prepare Americans and the world to appreciate the personality of Al Gore and the need for him to be in the White House come Jan. 2008 inorder to restore this land from the devastation and plunder that has been our lot from this irresponsible administration.

WHY AL GORE MUST RUN: As I had suspected, Gore had told Sen.Boxer not to sign the Black Caucus’ protest about the very suspicious Florida election for President. As Gore is the one to have taken that action, and then later as Boxer said in 2004 that it was not up to Gore back in 2000 it was up to the American voters. The entire state of Florida should have bowed out or re-voted. The USSC Dragged its backside and then put time as the main factor in helping thier “decision”. The entire thing was fishy and Gore is the one who decided it was better to realize that the GOP would have thier dittoheads making blood in the streets in order to pretend they had won. Gore also probably figured that Bush wouldn’t get much accomplished (remember Bush’s first six months).. about a lackluster squatter, and America would be in the mood to throw him out whereupon Gore could then run in ’04. Now, this “calculation” by Gore (or whatever it was that he did calculate, in making that decision to bow out to Boxer) was taken as a RISK that only Gore could shoulder as he was the one who had made that “decision” completely on his own. Ok, well when one takes risks, there are usually at least two possible outcomes from the action’s risk factor. The thing that turned out is that instead of Gore gaining his rightful place in history, where we would not have had a 9/11 (Gore ignore over 52 warnings ? …demote counter-terrorism office?

The only reason why I might watch the oscars is to see if Gore wins the oscar and then announces he is running for president. Lets’ face it, the pack of presidential contenders is pretty pathetic on both sides of the aile and if Gore ran, he is obviously the most qualified person to hold the office.

As someone who lived through Eisenhower to the present. “W” is far worse than Carter and Nixon combined! Carter besides being a former President is also an American, with a right to share his informed opinion – just as you have in this blog. Shame on you for not respecting the rights of all Americans!

While he might not have been an effective president, Jimmy Carter is one of the only past presidents (and Bill Clinton) who have used their position to help millions of people. And, yes, that’s MILLIONS. Unfortunately, you can’t say that of the past Republican presidents, who simply retired to play golf and maybe partake in a few minor fundraising efforts over the years. Bill Clinton is another example of a president being equally as influential AFTER his presidency.
Jimmy Carter has dedicated his life to help people and promote peace in the world. Habitat for Humanity would not be what it was without him. His ‘Peace Center’ is working to make conditions better in areas throughout the world.
The (ignorant) people who have written posts thus far might try reading once in a while. There’s a lot to be learned. I’ll bet if you asked any of them exactly what made Jimmy Carter the ‘worst president ever’, they would be hard pressed to be specific in their complaint.
Thank God for people like Jimmy Carter. If they weren’t making the world a better place to live, who would be? YOU?

It is very interesting to read the many comments on both sides but so sad to see the ignorance and the hateful tone of so many on both sides. It would be nice to have some comments based on fact instead of uninformed opinion. Nothing wrong with having an opinion, mind you, but when it is based on false information or on no basis whatsoever, it serves no purpose except maybe to make the one voicing it feel better.
President Carter the worst president ever? I think that would be hard to support but I did live through his presidency and I remember those times as being a very dark time for our country with a very pessimistic view dominating the national conscience. In my mind he is indeed the worst President in my lifetime and has done little to redeem himself since. A lot of the things he has been given credit for since leaving office turned out to have not accomplished what the were intended to so they can only be viewed as failures, no matter how good the intentions or the appearance of success on the front end.

As for Mark Tannenbaum and other’s postings about Global warming, I think his label of “sad, pathetic fool” is grossly misplaced. I like the comments about the flat earth society, too. It was the consensus of science which believed the earth was flat but that did not make it so. A consensus of scientists believed that “bloodletting” was the cure for a whole host of ailments. A consensus of scientists believed the sun revolved around the earth. Just because a large number of people (even scientists) believe something, it does not make it fact. Is global warming happening? Yes, I do believe as do most scientists that it is indeed happening and it is backed up with provable fact. Thank God there is global warming for without it we would still be in an ice age. What is not backed up by provable fact is that humans are causing it. The current trend in world wide warming started long before any sort of human industry was even a tiny factor and I would contend that the sum of all human activity is still too small compared to the earth’s own output to be of any significant affect. As one writer I recently read lately said, when someone tells you to believe something because a consensus of scientists believe it, hang on to your wallet because you are about to be had. If something is a provable fact, there would be no need to say “a consensus of scientists say” . The only reason to use that phrasing is because there is no proof behind the contention being presented. I have to say it is those who hold this belief in the human cause of global warming who are the flat earth people because they are believing in something which has not been proven and only holding to it based on a consensus which is likely wrong. If President Carter has some kind of positive proof, I would love to see it but until then I will stick to real science.

Bush has thrown away, or down a rat hole, One trillion dollars of tax payers money, hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi lives, the repupation of our country, and 10,000 American lives (not to mention tens of thousands of Americans maimed and wounded) for no strategic value what so ever.
Bush couldn’t pore piss out of a boot if the instructions were written on the heal.
Not only is he the worst president, but he will go down as the worst and the most dangerous president in the history of the United States. You can take that to the bank.
You know, this country may not survive Bush. You can’t waste a trillion dollars and not have some kind of an effect. This country is on tender hooks until Bush is gone. And maybe 50 years later when we’ve paid off his irresponsible spending binge, maybe then we can say that the United States survived Bush.

Bush has done nothing but hurt the American People in so many ways!, I can’t begin to tell you how many ways!. Yes.. You know, Tex, you could be right that Bush has wasted tons of our money for no good reason. however, I make 2 observations. First, Bin Laden attacked us because we showed weakness. It is very possible that if Bush had not been aggressive and gone on the attack that Bin Laden would have seen that as an even greater weakness and come after us worse than before. This money you think may have been wasted may have saved us. The problem is there is no way to know. Unless we recover some intelligence from Bin Laden’s group in the future which reveals this, we may never know if Bush saved us by spending the money and some lives or if it was all a waste. Educators will tell you it is better to stand up to a bully than to give in to them. This best way to stop the Bin Laden’s of this world is to not back down to them.
Second, it is possible to disagree with someone without making it a personal attack. I have no problem with you thinking and saying you believe Bush’s actions are wrong but it is totally out of line to attack him in such vile descriptive terms. Make an argument based on facts, not attacks.

If we want to be representative of a good and decent country, deserving of respect, we must learn to respect. If we have earned our voice, then surely Mr. Carter has earned his. To say that a former President should not speak or be heard, especially telling him to “shut-up”, that he should have no voice, demonstrates many values that are essentially un-American and not deserving of respect. Mr Carter I bet, would indulge any one of you to speak and consider your views. That’s decency. Its respectable. After all, it was his speaking that created this forum for your voice. A leader alone is not enough to save a nation. It is a representative government. Embody the traits and values you want to see in the President, and serve as an example, also teaching your children- they may become Presidents.
I was no fan of the Carter presidency, but I’m wise enough to recognize a degree of greatness in his accomplishments, and to not confuse hindsight with brilliance, and I recognize a man’s perspective in the 1970′s would be much different than in each subsequent decade. …and denying a man freedom of speech probably is not going to protect the “American” ideas we all subscribe to… not really.

If a moderate Republican is nominated – which seems likely – Gore is the Democrats’ only chance. Firstly, there will eventually be a Hillary/Obama burn-out, as they are starting so early; Secondly, no matter what one’s party affiliation, Americans generally have a want to correct injustice and love revenge. Considering that we all witnessed just how the world can be negatively affected by the election of a president and that Gore was rooked in 2000, there would be a collective desire to right a wrong; Third, the ugly reality is that there’s enough of the electorate which still sees the President as a white male role. If Hillary were more Margaret Thatcher-like, then maybe this factor could be affected greatly, but a strong well-respected independent visionary, she is not unfortunately. Despite the fact that Obama is an attractive and charismatic canditate, in a world of terror, voters will err on the side of a more seasoned Julliani or Romney, further comforted that neither is at his core an conservative idealog. It’s been decades since a real moderate/liberal Republican made the nomination – And Americans embrace moderates. Again, this would make Hillary and Obama seem more fringe-like. Who would have predicted world events, but HISTORY HAS SET THIS UP FOR GORE, and he could easily swoop in and take the hearts of enough of the electorate to win the Presidency. The independents and swing voters, looking to the Democrats for change, but too leery to put their vote in Hillary or Obama would gravitate toward Gore. Run, Mr. Gore, Run!!! (Just hold off a bit and let the others burn out -oh, and lose a little weight.)

If we don’t, the people who think we’re the “baddest nation on the planet” may discover there’s a place called China. Doesn’t anyone remember Iran holding our embasy personnel hostage? Doesn’t anyone remember 19%-21% interest rates?
Doesn’t anyone remember double-digit inflation? Doesn’t anyone remember President Carter’s bumbling cronies from Georgia and his alcoholic brother constantly embarassing his administration? President Carter was a nice guy who had no clue how to run this country, and now all he can do is run his big mouth and trash talk President Bush and this country’s policies. President Carter was the worst President in history on foreign policy, economic issues, and for maintaining a strong military. Iran basically thumbed their nose at him, and it wasn’t until President Reagan took office that the hostages were released. His latest attack on President Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair are unfounded, and I think he is getting politically senile.

President Carter is a true statesman and I value his opinion. He normalized relations with China and brokered the first peace between an Arab nation and Israel. No other president since he left office has done as much as he did with respect to the Middle East. And let’s not forget what the Carter Center has done since he left office. He has monitored elections throughout the world because he is viewed by interested parties as unbiased. He has wiped out deadly diseases in the developing world that kill and maim. Rather that spend his time playing golf and jumping out of airplanes, he has been a credit to the office of the presidency. His endorsement of Gore indicates to me that Gore combines the vision, the decency, the courage, and the humanitarianism to be a statesman. After the catastrophic presidency of Junior, the country and the world need a man of decency and courage to lead us.

Though Mr. Carter, a true statesman, may have not been the best president-in unfortunate times of the 70′s (post Watergate)-we have worse! Mr. Carter has done more for humanity than any president and even won the Nobel Peace for his decades of un-relentless effort to resolve international conflicts- in a peaceful manner and to advance human rights, and promote economic and social development-none that I know! It is amazing how only the “far right” sees him as a bad president, yet sees GW as a good president.

Which former President Nobel Prize winner was in charge the last time the USA had gas lines and 12% unemployment and 14% inflation?

Carter the worst President ever? Jesus Christ, let’s bring in the laugh-oh-meter and watch it go off the charts. Most of the problems he faced weren’t his fault. Inflation started with Nixon and the Iranians purposely made Carter look like an ass out of personal vindictiveness for his letting the former Iranian president into our country.

Jimmy Carter continues to be the biggest moron this country has to offer — and I am not even considering the (dis)honor of being a past President.
If Hitler were alive, Carter would undoubtedly meet with him to find out what are his “concerns” about the Jewish people.
Meeting with the exiled leader of Hamas is no different. Hamas has one, and only one goal: the destruction of Israel and the ethnic cleansing of all Jews. It is in their Charter. It is their reason for being.
The delusional Carter has a penchant for talking with not only Israel’s sworn enemies, but also America’s, and the only thing he accomplishes is more badmouthing of America and Israel and boosting their prestige in the eyes of our other enemies.
He should have been tried as a traitor a long time ago.
