Edwards on Geffen Spat: ‘I Think It’s Awfully Early for That Sort of Sniping’

ABC News’ Paul Fidalgo Reports: While appearing on NBC’s "Today" show, former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., bemoaned the sparring that took place Wednesday between the Clinton and Obama camps over comments made by Obama supporter David Geffen to the New York Times’ Maureen Dowd.

"I think it’s awfully early for that sort of sniping back and forth," said Edwards, adding that he intends to run a "positive campaign."

Asked if he meant to imply at Wednesday’s Democratic presidential candidates’ forum that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., was not "honest, open, and decent" on the Iraq war, Edwards said, "No, nothing of the kind."

He added, however, that candidates are judged not just by "what we do, but whether we take responsibility for what we’ve done."

Edwards and Clinton have taken different approaches to their 2002 votes to authorize the use of force in Iraq. Edwards has repeatedly apologized for the vote while Clinton has refused to call the vote a "mistake" while saying that knowing what she knows now, she would not have cast the same pro-war vote.

I watched this morning with profound disappointment on the lack of objective and fair journalism. Not at the “sound bites” with the Clinton/Geffen/Obama discussion, but rather why the question was not poised to Mr. Stephenopholous, “should Mr. Edwards apologize to Sen.Clinton”? His comments were similiar in stance as Mr. Geffen’s opinion, and came directly from him. Yet, Sen. Obama’s character was called in to question, and he was addressed to apologize for something someone else said. This disturbs me as a registered voter who is relying not only on the candidates and their responses and positions, but on what is deemed as responsible journalism from a program such as yours. If I want subjective “fluff” journalism, then I will listen to Bill O’Reilly. Shame on you Good Morning America, you have let me done.
