ABC News’ Luis Martinez Reports: the nominations of Adm. William Fallon to be the new commander of U.S. Central Command and Gen. George Casey as the Army’s Chief of Staff have passed the Senate Armed Services Committee and are headed to the full Senate for a final vote.
Senate Armed Services Chairman Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., interrupted a budget hearing featuring Defense Secretary Robert Gates and General Peter Pace to hold the votes. Both nominations passed, but whereas Adm. Fallon’s vote was a unanimous 16-0, Gen. Casey received three ‘no’ votes, all from Republicans, with a final tally of 14-3.
Republican senators voting against Casey’s nomination were Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz.; John Ensign, R-Nev.; and Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.
