Nader Defends Third Parties, Leaves ’08 Door Open

ABC News’ Lindsay Hamilton reports: In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer former presidential candidate from the Green Party Ralph Nader defended his right to run for office and says he will decide later in the year if he will jump in the 2008 fray.

"It’s really too early to say," Nader said when asked if he had plans to run. "I don’t like long campaigns, but I’m committed to trying to give more voices and choices to the American people on the ballot. That means more third parties, independent candidates and to break up this two-party elected dictatorship that is becoming more and more like a dial for the same corporate dollars."

Nader also addressed with Blitzer the popular notion among Democrats that he "spoiled" the 2000 election for former Vice President Al Gore.

"If we all have equal right to run for public office, Wolf, then we’re either all spoilers of one another, or none of us are spoilers" he said, later adding, "I’ve spoken to Al Gore. You ask Al Gore what cost him the election- he thinks he won the election. I agree."

ralph nader should run in 2008. he is the only candidate out there who is not enslaved to the money of the special intrest.with all the money that obama and clinton are raising they dont seem to care about the average person. mr nader is a man who listens and has not been currupted by big corporations .I just finished reading his book the seventeen traditions and he has alot of great principles in there that alot of the politicans seem to have taken for granted. whats in the seventeen traditions by ralph nader are the qualities that make an honest politican. I want ralph nader to debait hillary and obama in 08.

the more i read ignorant comments blaming nader instead of addressing the fact that whatever “democracy” there may have been here is being beaten to death in broad daylight, the more i am convinced that we deserve whatever we get. this country doesn’t deserve or even know what to do with an honest man like nader. unfortunately, the rest of the world is desperate for real leadership to emerge from within this monster and i am sad to say that it is simply not going to happen.
poor ralph. he truly still believes in the inherent goodness of the american people, in democracy, in civic responsibility and in the possibility of reform. although i share none of these beliefs at this point, i voted for him before and he is the only person that i would vote for again.

Hey Ralph – it’s not about YOUR rights – again. Yet another example of the Lieberman Virus – it infects the host and just enough people to clear the room. Is it really so difficult for some of these guys to figure out that they (and a handful of their closest frinds) are the only people who believe their are “presidential material”.
And thanks for making my point – would someone please point out the makeup of today’s Supreme Court? Perhaps then he could recognize the difference between Republicans and Democrats. He will pay in eternity for spreading that malicious disinformation.

Ralph Nader, wake up to the realities. You have already done enough damage to this nation, taking away the votes, that could have put Al Gore in the White House. It’s time for you to come to senses and let a new generation to inspire & lead.

I supported Nader’s run in 2000 but only to build the Green Party, not Nader’s latest organization. Nader has never joined the Green Party or truely supported the building of an independent progressive party. I learned from the 2000 experience. I didn’t support Nader running as a GP candidate in 2004 (he ran as an independent). It’s his right to do what he wants (even if I believe it is ineffective and inconsequential). I wouldn’t support his nomination for the Green Party ticket again.

I hope that Ralph Nader decides to run for President in 2008-shake it up in 2008-maybe this time he will be given the opportunity to debate the other candidates in a nation wide public forum.

Sherry Bass: There is absolutely nothing in the Constitution which is the very foundation of our democtratic Republic that requires that a President be a christian. Furthermore, we already have a born-again Christian in the White House.
