Republicans Dare Dems To Cut Iraq Funds

ABC News’ Z. Byron Wolf Reports: Democratic Senators are hatching, planning and discussing a new effort to repeal the 2002 Iraq war authorization as part of their efforts to end the war in Iraq.

The entire Democratic caucus is going to take a look at the idea next Tuesday. However, Republican leaders are already criticizing it.

The United States is in Iraq, said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-KY., during a conference call with reporters today, and repealing the President’s right to use force would be like trying to "un-ring a bell."

The top Republican in the Senate said that after the Democrats were unable to find 60 votes for a non-binding resolution disapproving of the President’s surge strategy, they were now looking for the "goldilocks solution" — the one that’s just right, like porridge, said Sen. McConnell.

Sen. McConnell also questioned whether Democrats would have the Constitutional ability to de-authorize the war.

"It’s a murky area as to whether or not congress could, in effect, micromanage the war," Sen. McConnell said. "I would think that no court would want to have to arbitrate that and I would think that no administration would pay any attention to it."

Republicans have also taken to accusing Democrats of employing a "slow-bleed" strategy for Iraq to end the war incrementally — first opposing the surge and then micromanaging the President.

Sen. McConnell argued that if they really want to end the war, Democrats should instead focus on the power over the President that Congress is granted in the Constitution — the power of the purse.

"If the democrats are serious about stopping the war, the supplemental appropriations that will fund the war is the vehicle," McConnell said. "Its coming along in a month. They don’t have to wait a long time to have a vote on the real thing."

This, of course, is a dare. McConnell doesn’t think the funding should be cut off and he doesn’t think the American people would stand for Democrats cutting off any funding. So he is inviting them to do it at every opportunity.

If Democrats seek a vote on their de-authorization legislation, Sen. McConnell has pledged to bring up a companion vote that would pledge funding for the troops, just as he did with the anti-surge resolution.

Such a resolution is expected to get more votes than any Democratic proposal to de-authorize the war.

"We have to have a fair debate on Iraq. And you can’t have a fair debate on Iraq without talking about funding the troops," said Sen. McConnell.

McConnell said he would insist on this companion vote even if Democrats tried to offer their de-authorization as an amendment to the supplemental funding request that the White House has sent to Congress to fund the wars.

If that becomes the case, Sen. McConnell would have to essentially filibuster the troop funding to make the point that the troops should be funded.

On the flip side, Democrats –if they continued to deny Sen. McConnell his vote on the funding resolution — would accuse him of holding up funding for the troops. However, they would probably not mention that they were doing it so that they, themselves, wouldn’t have to pledge to fund the troops.

I believe that stopping a war is different from micromanaging it. The Democrats need to take all necessary steps to stop this war and bring U.S. troops home. We have wasted enough time, money, and lives on Mr.Bush’s Wild Ride. If Sen. McConnell is arguing that the American people, through their elected representatives, don’t have the right to stop a war which was begun under false pretenses, he must be living under a different Constitution than the one I’m under. This war was begun under a set of lies and it would be immoral to let it continue. Now is the time for our elected representatives to clearly state whether they are for or against the continuance of this war – and to be held accountable for that stand.

The Republicrats are damn lucky, I am not calling the shots. I would not be whimpy like the Democrats we elected to office. They are still living in a frightened world of the military backlash at every turn they take. I would definitely cut off the funding and bring the troops home, regardless. The mission was over a long time ago. While we invaded a no nothing country for WMD, the Taliban retooled in Poppy land. Go figure America. Our troops are nation builders instead of defenders. Bushlite and the Heart attack kid and the rest of the Republican’s have for too long been the Boogy man of terror. Cmon America wake up. Nothing is foolproof. The administration by saying there has been no attacks on the US to date sounds good. But watch what you wish for. I am a Vet and I can tell you one thing. This conspiracy that has gone on long enough, needs to end.

“This war was begun under a set of lies and it would be immoral to let it continue.”
If so, then it was lies that the Clinton administration endorsed. No WMD? ASK THE KURDS ABOUT WMDS! And if you want to find them, go to Syria!

We spoke very cleary on 11/7/2006, for removal of these republican congressmen. We spoke very clearly for troops out of Iraq.
Apparently, the Republicans STILL don’t understand that we “the American ” voting Middle, demanded troops out of Iraq. I’m sure they will really “COMPREHEND the message” in 2008.
As a wise mind once stated (Oct 2006), Republican Congressmen might as well start looking for a new job, now! It takes longer when you have a failed leadership record to the people of your state!
FAILED = Sen. McConnell
Remember you can always apply as a waitor or waitress!
As we step onward, more and more Republican congressmen “WILL BE” tossed out of a JOB like dirty gum wrapper. Next………………..

All at the expense of our troops
What about 6 years of total medical and benefit neglect by the Republicans via Walter Reed – Building 18.
Support Bush, but not the troops, should of been the Republican slogan.
How many other buildings 18′s are in rotten shape?
Why are these troops denied their disability benefits?
Or given only a rate of lower than 30 percent ratings?
Why are the troops buried in needless paperwork?
Why do they lose the paperwork of disabled troops?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
To cap the disability cost.
