Democratic Congressman Slams ‘Idiot Liberals’

ABC News’ Jake Tapper Reports: Rep. David Obey, D-Wisc., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, lost his temper when confronted by liberal activists who want him to cut off funding for the war.

The activists want Obey to support legislation from the House "Out of Iraq" caucus — which says it has anywhere from 80 to 100 votes in favor of ending the war this year, not likely next year as the appropriations bill offered yesterday by Obey and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would do.

"That makes no sense," Obey says of the Out of Iraq Caucus legislation. "The liberal groups are jumping around without knowing what the hell is in (our) bill."

Obey, one of the more liberal members of Congress in the House went on to slam what he called the "idiot liberals" who are against his Iraq war plan.

Obey, never known for his cool head, says "I’m the sponsor of the bill that’s going to be on the floor — and that bill ends the war," Obey says, his voice rising. "If that isn’t good enough for you, you’re smoking something illegal!"

"If you guys quit screwing it up," he says, presumably angry at the House Out of Iraq Caucus and liberal activists, "we do have the votes to end the legal authority for the war that’s the same as defunding it!"

"You got your facts screwed up!" Obey says. "We don’t have the votes! You see a magic wand in my pocket?!"

You can watch the anti-war group’s video of their confrontation with Rep. Obey here.

It’s unfortunate that Mr Obey cannot control him temper and resorts to name calling. He should have better used that energy to explain his position and his lack of a magic wand. Who really screwed up?
The bottom line is that we don’t want to be in a war that we had no business being in. There are no weapons of mass destruction and no BinLaden. It’s a war of false pretenses and egos. The money that they found over there and lost and the funds that the Pentagon lost is what should be used to fund the war

Congressman, am I going to have to put you in timeout? No, please keep that magic wand in your pocket – it is probably illegal to wave it around like that. Democracy is a messy process and many people are frustrated by waiting so long with no oversight being done on Iraq. If you engage a bit too much in inside baseball, you lose people on this. Bottom line, we will leave it up to the Democrats to take whatever steps they must to stop the war – and will then judge their success or failure at the ballot box. The Republicans who support this misadventrue will pay the price at both the polls and when they have to answer to a higher authority about the morality of their actions while on this earth.

I understand Obey’s frustration. One of the reasons the Republicans got control in the first place is because “idiot liberals” made his lunacy seem downright moderate in comparison.
