Democrats to Propose Troop Withdrawal from Iraq by Fall of 2008
ABC’ s Jake Whitman Reports: House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office has announced plans for a morning news conference to unveil a new Democratic plan that calls for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq by fall of 2008.
The proposal will call for an even earlier withdrawal if the Iraqi government fails to meet security and other goals.
Pelosi will be joined by Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., and other key lawmakers for today’s announcement.
Murtha is chairman of the subcommittee with jurisdiction over the Pentagon’s budget and is among the House’s most outspoken opponents of the war.
The legislation is expected on the floor of the House later this month, and would mark the most direct challenge to date the new Democratic-controlled Congress has posed to the president’s war
policies.
