Edwards: Jesus Would Be ‘Appalled’

ABC’s Jake Whitman Reports:  Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards says Jesus would be appalled at how the United States has ignored the plight of the suffering.

In an interview with the Website Beliefnet.com, Edwards also said he believes children should have private time to pray at school.

"I think that Jesus would be disappointed in our ignoring the plight of those around us who are suffering and our focus on our own selfish short-term needs," Edwards told the site. "I think he would be appalled, actually."

Edwards also says he does not think of America as a Christan nation.  "I never thought of it quite that way," Edwards said,  "There’s a lot of America that’s Christian. I would not describe us, though, on the whole, as a Christian nation. I guess the word "Christian" is what bothers me, even though I’m a Christian. I think that America is a nation of faith. I do believe that. Certainly by way of heritage–there’s a powerful Christian thread through all of American history."

Many people don’t see the same America that John Edwards says he sees when he indicates that WE are ignoring those who are suffering. Jesus also talked about able bodied people that milked the system and wouldn’t work. Edwards and some of the other presidential candidates need to stop pandering and grandstanding. The truth needs to be said. Attempts at political correctness and a daily dose of disinformation by the media and politicians similar to him, are confusing the mind of the American people. Just give us the facts and once we have the those, we can make intelligent choices.

If Jesus Christ is the Son of God, if He is God Creator as some people claim, how can we casually refer to Him and know how He would react to any situation here on earth? Would not His thoughts be so much higher than ours? All we can do is to talk about what He has said and leave it up to Him, if He is alive as some say, to convince us of the error of our ways. It seems to me that the spirit of condemning has never been His practice. It is one thing to condemn in our own name but quite different to have the casual gaul to do so in the name of Christ. Let Him speak for Himself-thank you very much!

I wonder if Bobby could provide some Gospel citations for Jesus talking about “milking the system.” It seems to me that Jesus was much more concerned about the wealthy and well-placed using their position to aggrandize themselves.

Edwards is correct when he says that Jesus would be apalled at how the US government has ignored the plight of the suffering. Look at how the Bush administration treats our wounded soldiers at Walter Reed hospital. Look at how the administration treated the suffering after hurricane Katrina hit. There is so much neglect. Yes, Jesus is upset.

Clearly Edwards was pointing out that many who style themselves “Christians” make little attempt to model their behavior on that of Christ. Edwards is to be lauded for underscoring the plight of the American poor, many of whom are children, mentally ill, disabled, and/or poorly educated. The defensiveness of some on this thread is very telling.

It is strange but I have missed the bit where Jesus condemns those who milk the system. Perhaps Bobby jerrell can point them out. The real truth is that people take their own opinions and say they are those of Jesus.

Obama may not have the experience to be President; Edwards does not have the experience to be a CANDIDATE for President.

Is this guy just Dan Quayle from the other party, and another (not dissimilar) guise?
John Edwards is like a blabbering, flawed robot and exactly reminds me of what the Robert Redford character realized he was turning into in ‘The Candidate’.
I sense no steely resolve and yet not an ounce of warmth in the man what-so-ever, so what sort of a leader for a nation could he possibly be?!
Dems, please exercise your votes in an alternative direction.

Where is the seperation of church and state, and why is there ever any reference of “Jesus” in any political statement. Is this just another ploy at the christian people to attract more votes? I find this reference disgusting and completely uncalled for!

I am sure Jesus approves of Johns support for abortions for any reason…
