Edwards’ New Plan to Fight Global Warming
ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson Reports: Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., announced a new strategy for achieving energy independence and stopping global warming, during a reporter’s roundtable in San Francisco, California.
Says Edwards, "Global warming is not an issue for the future. It is a crisis that demands action from us today. We have the chance to create an energy revolution in our country, but if we’re going to have that happen, we have to be willing to take action now. We need to be smart and responsible about how we use coal, so we can leave our children and grandchildren a safer and cleaner planet."
In a continued effort to stop global warming, Edwards is calling on the United States to find new ways of using coal without warming the planet. Specifically he’s calling for a ban of construction of coal plants that fail to capture carbon dioxide emissions.
It is believed that coal fired plants generate more than half or our electricity in the United States, but cause a third of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions.
Undoubtedly, global warming has been a cornerstone of Edwards’ campaign.
Just last week, Edwards called for America to halt global warming, create a new energy economy and meet the demand for electricity with efficiency for the next decade.
While he tries to practice what he preaches, Edwards admits that he’s not perfect when it comes to making provisions about conservation.
Though he lives in a five-star energy saver home, he admits that like many Americans, he too drives a large vehicle. But, of the two cars he owns, he says he’s proud that one is a hybrid, and even prouder that it’s an American Hybrid.
