ABC News Reports: Former Senator John Edwards, D-N.C., a declared ’08 presidential candidate, today announced that doctor’s have diagnosed her wife with cancer.
"Her cancer is back. It’s largely confined in bone, which is a good thing," said Edwards.
"The bottom line is we are very optimistic about this. After having been through some struggles in the past, we know the key is to keep your head up," said Edwards. "It is completely treatable," he said.
Edwards made the announcement in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where he said the Edwards’ held their wedding reception.
As ABC News’ Kate Snow has reported, this week, Edwards cut short a trip to Iowa in order to accompany his wife on a doctor’s visit.
Elizabeth Edwards, a breast cancer survivor, has recently gone to the doctor to check in on the progress of her recovery. John Edwards cut short his campaign swing through Iowa to be with his wife at her checkup in North Carolina.
This isn’t the first time his wife’s health has impacted John Edwards’ political career. In 2004, a day after he lost his bid for vice president, Americans learned that Elizabeth Edwards was battling breast cancer.
Elizabeth Edwards began chemotherapy, surgery and radiation treatments.
Together, the couple had already weathered heartbreak with the death of their beloved 16-year old son, Wade, who died in a car accident in 1996.
