Giuliani Supports Gonzales

ABC News’ Matthew Zavala Reports: Although Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is making more enemies than friends inside the Beltway these days, he may have one supporter in Mayor Rudy Giuliani, R-N.Y.

Following his speech to the National Newspaper Association, Giuliani told reporters that Gonzales should be given "the benefit of the doubt." Giuliani also seemed to agree with President Bush’s handling of the situation thus far.

Giuliani furthered his comments by saying, "The attorney general’s an honorable man. He’s a decent man. He should be given a chance to explain and everybody should sort of give him the benefit of the doubt and allow him to explain."

As of now, Gonzales will be given that chance next month when he will deliver testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on "Department of Justice Oversight" on April 17.

This isn’t very smart. Why give a statement of support when we don’t even know anything yet? Why say anything at all?

As I recall, Harry Reid said recently that we were only days away from Gonzales’ resignation so I’m glad someone spoke up for the man. Sure, Giuliani is “selfishly” assuming that the man is innocent before his guilt is proven, but the former mayor typically does crazy things like this!
