Kucinich owes Uncle Sam $137K

Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, who is seeking his party’s nomination for president in 2008, owes the U.S. Treasury more than $137,000 from his failed 2004 presidential campaign for using public money after his date of ineligibility.

An audit conducted by The Federal Election Commission found that "Kucinich for President, Inc." continued to use federal funds for Kucinich’s White House run after March 4, 2004, at which time Kucinich was only supposed to use private contributions for his campaign.  An audit report released on Monday found that Kucinich campaigned all the way until July 29, 2004, the date on which the Democratic party chose Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, to be its nominee for president.

Mr. Kucinich has 60 calendar days to challenge the audit’s findings, but in the meantime, he must repay Uncle Sam $137,358 within 90 days.
