President Bush Defends Gonzales, Denies Attorneys were Fired for Political Reasons
President Bush expressed confidence in his Attorney General Alberto Gonzales today and denied that the firing of several U.S. attorneys was politically motivated. "Mistakes were made and I’m not happy about it," the president said adding that he has confidence in Gonzales.
Mr. Bush said he talked to Gonzales about the need to go up to Capitol Hill and make clear to members of both political parties why the Department of Justice made the decisions that were made.
On the issue of whether or not the judges were fired for political reasons Bush said he has heard about the allegations and that they are not true.
The president made his comments at a press availability in Mexico.
