Senators Respond to Bush Troop Request

ABC News’ Lindsay Hamilton reports: While Democrats in Congress are trying to find a way to get troops out of Iraq, President Bush is asking for money to put more forces in.

Across the Sunday talk shows, Senators from both sides responded to Bush’s latest step.

"As long as he has the authority as commander in chief to conduct a war, he’s going to be able to control a lot of these sorts of things," Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. "I don’t think people are going to go against him in terms of cutting back the appropriations for more troops. The big question is, how are we going to turn this thing around? And I think despite a lot of the rhetoric that you’ve seen, we’ve started to do that."

But one of the president’s own party members, Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, Penn., seemed skeptical of the request.

"Before making a decision, I want to know more about what has happened from the additional troops the president has already committed," Specter told CBS’s Bob Schieffer.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told Schieffer Congress was likely to support extra troops for the mission in Afghanistan, but Iraq was another story.

"Whether it’s 4,000 more troops or 40,000 more troops, we Democrats believe almost unanimously that we need a dramatic change in course," Schumer said. "So when the supplemental spending resolution comes before us next week, we are going to be focusing on the entire mission in Iraq and try to get it changed."

The Democrats should support Bush and the troops fighting the wars. More troops and more money is the way to win. Retreat is defeat!

It is high time we stop being the bully on the block. What comes around goes around. We may beat up one smallish country today, but tomorrow or the day after we will taste the other end of the stick if we continue this behavior. America has acted like an arrogant fool in this situation. We have let our leaders squander the money for our health care and education for our kids on a fools errand. The cost of this activity is reported to be over $3000/yr for every man woman and child in this country. I want that money for America, not for destabilizing the rest of the world. If we are more competitive, we can call the shots. Bombs and bullets dont last nearly as long as technological leadership and good investments.
