White House Denies Search Underway For Gonzales Successor

ABC’s Jake Whitman Reports:   As Congressional investigators and reporters pour over 3,000 pages of documents released by the Justice Department related to the firings of 8 federal prosecutors, the White House is standing by embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez.

This morning, White House deputy Press Secretary Dana Perino tells ABC News there is nothing to the Department of Justice emails she has reviewed that would change the statements of support already made by the White House.

Perino also says flatly that it is "inaccurate" to say the White House is searching for a Gonzales successor.

Quoting Republican party sources, the Website Politico.com is reporting that the White House is seeking replacements for Gonzales.   The site reports that among the names being floated are Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, White House anti-terrorism coordinator Frances Townsend and solicitor general Theodore B. Olson.
