White House Withdraws Ambassadorial Nomination of Swift Boat Backer
ABC News’ Jake Tapper Reports: The White House withdrew the nomination of Sam Fox as Ambassador to Belgium Wednesday, the very day the Senate Foreign Relations Committee was scheduled to vote on the nomination.
Fox, a Missouri businessman, was opposed by Democrats due to his $50,000 contribution to the Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth, which attacked the Vietnam war record of Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., in his 2004 presidential bid.
The nomination’s withdrawal follows an email from the presidential campaign of Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., which asked supporters to sign a petition urging the Senate committee to vote against the nomination.
"U.S. ambassadors need to be both responsible and credible, and Mr. Fox’s support for an organization known to have spread falsehoods illustrates neither," said Dodd. "The fact that Mr. Fox refused to apologize for his behavior during his nomination hearing reinforces my belief that he would not be an acceptable representative for the position of U.S. ambassador."
