Cheney Calls Out Congress Over War Funding

ABC News’ Lindsay Hamilton reports: Vice President Dick Cheney took the Democrat-controlled Congress to task over the hotly debated $100 billion measure to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Cheney reiterated the president’s intent to veto any legislation that would put conditions on the funding for the troops. He called the funding "essential."

"It’s for the troops. The troops are in the field or in combat every day, and the process has already run on far too long. We’re already some 70 days since the president made this request," he told CBS’s Bob Schieffer.

"The fact of the matter is, I do believe that the positions that the Democratic leaders have taken and, to a large extent now, are irresponsible," he said.

Really Mr Cheney, if the money is all that critical, why was it omitted from the 2007 budget when sent whrn you had control of congress?

The Democrats are totally irresposible in the the matter of troop funding. Funding is essential and any further delay requires action.

Really, Mr. Cheney, if the money is all that critical and the President’s statement that he supports the troops is sincere, then why does he not just accept the bill as is and work to soften or finesse changes later? Could it be, that Bush only supports the troops if that means that nothing gets in the way of him getting his way? And if it does mean compromise then Bush is willing to throw away the very money he claims is needed? Does the President support the troops or just USE the troops? Hmmmmmm?

Dick Cheney should stay away from the
role of fund-raiser. “It’s for the troops”. Coming from his lips, it turns my stomach. I liked him much better in the role of evil CEO; fund-
ing a war on the cheap, giving troops
shoddy or not enough equipment, lame excuses about the “cost of war”.

Mr. Cheney is the last person to be talking about being irresponsible. He is probably the one mostly to blame for the situation that our country is in. Most of everything that he has said about this conflict for the last four years has been proven to be wrong. He has pushed others (Powell) to say things that were false. On many occasions he has even contradicted Mr. Bush. Has he ever owned up to anything? NO. Everything in life has a timetable, it’s what keeps us on track and focused. Setting one in Iraq will let our brave soldiers and their families know that a day will soon come when they can come home and enjoy the love of family and a grateful country. THAT is really supporting the troops: they deserve to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
