ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson Reports: Democratic presidential candidate former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., and his wife Elizabeth released a statement Monday reacting to the tragedy at Virginia Tech.

"We are simply heartbroken by the deaths and injuries suffered at Virginia Tech," read the statement.  "We know what an unspeakable, life-changing moment this is for these families and how, in this moment, it is hard to feel anything but overwhelming grief, much less the love and support around you. But the love and support is there."

The Edwards family, who lost their son Wade, then 16, just over ten years ago in a single-car accident, quoted a Methodist hymn in the statement that they said gave them solace "in a time such as this".

"Our dearest wish is that this day could start again, with the promise of these young people alive," the statement read. "Knowing that cannot be, our prayer is for God’s grace and whatever measure of peace can be reached on this terrible day."
