Dodd to Vote Against Iraq Bill

ABC News’ Rick Klein and Donna Hunter Report: Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., plans to vote against the war supplemental when it comes to the Senate floor this week, a campaign aide tells ABC News.

Dodd’s decision will heighten pressure on other members of Congress who are running for president including Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. to follow suit.

Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., said today that he will vote for the bill.

The move by Dodd puts him in league with former senator John Edwards, D-N.C., in opposing the war-funding measure, which does not include a timetable for troop withdrawal. Both men are hoping their strong opposition to the war sets them apart in the crowded Democratic 2008 field. In a statment, Dodd said, "I cannot and will not simply give this president another blank check. Half-measures and equivocations are not going to change our course in Iraq.  If we are serious about ending the war, Congress must stand up to this president’s failed policy now – with clarity and conviction."

Dodd takes a thinly veiled swipe at Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama in a campaign commercial to begin airing today in New Hampshire and Iowa, hoping to point to what he sees as nuances in his two ’08 rivals positions on Iraq.

In the 30 second spot, the announcer says Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton have changed their positions to follow Chris Dodd.

Thank God for Dodd! Screw the likes of Carl Levin. America voted in ’06 for change and what have we got? Nada. We out of Iraq and we want the people that lied to us and got this whole thing started to be held accountable. Period.
