Giuliani’s Abortion Position Highlighted in First Debate
ABC News’ Tahman Bradley Reports: Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani stood alone among Republican presidential candidates when he said it would be "ok" for a court to overturn Roe vs. Wade or leave the law as it is.
"It would be OK to repeal it. It would be OK also if a strict constructionist viewed it as precedent," Giuliani said at a GOP debate in Simi Valley, Calif.
When offering a further explanation of his abortion position, Giuliani talked about his hatred of abortion but said plainly, "I respect a woman’s right to make a different choice."
The former mayor also stated his support for the Hyde Amendment banning the use of federal funds for abortions.
Despite leading the pack of 2008 GOP hopefuls in some national polls, Giuliani’s past support for protecting a woman’s right to choose has been one of a handful of issues that puts him out of step with socially conservative voters who are influential in the Republican nomination process.
