Gonzales Deputy Resigns

ABC News’ Pierre Thomas and Jason Ryan Report: Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty has resigned from the Department of Justice and will leave the department later this summer.

McNulty was closely involved in the controversial firings of eight U.S. attorneys which has sparked calls from Capitol Hill for Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign.

"The Department of Justice will be losing a dynamic and thoughtful leader," said Gonzales in a statement released Monday.

In his resignation letter, McNulty said he was leaving for financial reasons.

"The financial realities of college-age children and two decades of public service lead me to a long overdue transition in my career," McNulty wrote in a letter to Gonzales.

He made no reference to his role in the controversial firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., the Democrats’ chief prosecutor where it comes to Gonzales, released a statement suggesting the wrong man left the Justice Department.

"It seems ironic that Paul McNulty who at least tried to level with the committee goes while Gonzales who stonewalled the committee is still in charge.  This administration owes us a lot better," reads Schumer’s statement to the media.
