Out of Iraq?
Here’s something unexpected — before the House votes today on its Iraq funding bill, it will vote on a bill from Rep Jim McGovern, D-Mass., to withdraw US troops from Iraq.
The McGovern bill says within 90 days of enactment the president has to commence withdrawal of US combat forces from Iraq. The bill cuts all funding for the war — except for the safe and orderly withdrawal of US forces, reconstruction, diplomatic initiatives, and limited counterterrorism operations.
There has been a lot of discontent among anti-war liberals in Congress that they don’t get opportunities to vote for something they actually believe in, instead voting on all sorts of compromise measures. So last night at a meeting among Democratic leaders, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., agreed to let these anti-war liberals have this vote.
After the bill almost certainly fails to pass, the House will proceed to consideration of the Iraq funding bill offered by Rep. David Obey, D-Wisc., chairman of he House Appropriations Committee, which would give the Pentagon $42 billion or so immediately so as not to disrupt operations, while fencing off $53 billion until the president reports on Iraqi government benchmarks in July, after which the House will vote on whether to release those funds.

‘Anti-war Liberals’ stop with the labels unless you want to call out republicans for “supporting the troops death.” Got that?
I’m from a military family and I’m opposed to this war, not because I’m a liberal (I’m not that nice;-) but because of common sense and the fact its illegal according to our own laws!

Interesting phrase: “antiwar liberals”. Would you call those wanting to continue funding for the war “war-mongerers”, regardless of whether they want a timetable for withdrawal or not? When was the last time you called Limbaugh a “neanderthal reactionary”? What is a “liberal” anyway? The media in general need to be very careful in choosing words, as they inevitably convey a bias on the reporter’s part.

These anti-war “liberals” are just a bit ahead of their time. In a few months this bill will pass overwhelmingly.

Thanks, sophillyfatz for the phrasing!
George Bush shall be know as the Chief WarMonger and Dick Cheney as the Deacon of Death in my household from this moment on.

I cannot believe even today how the duo got reelected in 2004. I am referring to the war mongers – Dubya and Dick. This war is simply a ploy to get oil cos fill their bank balances. It would be ok perhaps if 3400 US men/women were not dead. Why r we even debating what to do in iraq? Dubya and Dick should be asked- what about Osama?????

Seems that the GOP does’nt get it or it’s just GW & Dick.
Cut the war funding & get the GI’s home now, instead of funding Haliburton and corrupt defense contractors.

I’m proud of this guy! This is what they should have done to start with and this is what they should keep on doing until the war hawks get the message. Those newly elected Democratic reps seemed like a huge mistake to me at the time but the majority of the people in this country sent them because they promised to put a stop to this war.
We aren’t supporting our soldiers by leaving them in the middle of mayhem or sending more into harm’s way.
And now that the Iraqi soldiers want a SUMMER VACATION and the Parliament has proven they don’t want to consider any serious issues, it’s time to call it a day and bring our soldiers home.

Before attacking our troops and the 2nd best President in modern history (Reagan being the first) Learn History!
In 1995 a coup was set in Iraq with the agreement that President Clinton would send in air cover to support it. And 30 minutes prior to action by the Kurds President Clinton and Albright canceled the air support and Hussein used Chemical weapons (that he supposely did not have) to kill the kurds. In approx 1995 also he was about to collapse but France with the oil for food scandal saved him. Look it up!!!
I also find it funny that during Clinton era we were hit at least 8 times by terrorists and I count 9/11 as his since they were training here at that time, and under our current Commander and Chief we have NOT been hit. Funny is it not!!
My question is who is using whos talking points are the Libs using Bin Ladins or is Bin Ladin using theirs?
If we do not get victory here we will be destroyed here. We are winning over there, a country were over 90% is stable. Maybe if we heard the good news coming from Iraq, Maybe if we stop putting this show of comtempt this would be over. The terrorist see what is going on and they are trying to wait us out, if we showed resolve and full support for our troops this would of been over already. They know they can not beat us militarily and they just have to wait us out.
Our troops are hero’s and need to be supported in a mission they believe in!! Disgruntled Generals looking for book deals need to be ignored.
Of course mistakes were made, every war has mistakes made, it is if you learn from them and move on that shows that.
By the way when the Socialists ran in Nov 2006 they said nothing about defunding or pulling our troops out, so how could they been elected on that.
Again has history taught us nothing!!

Spock,
You are in serious need of some therapy. Bush is far from being the second best President in modern history, and Reagan certainly wasn’t the best.
George W. Bush set his eyes in Irak, since the moment it took office. Officials of the Clinton administration told him that Bin Laden was planning an attack in the United States, and he disregarded it. The Bush administration are the only ones to blame for 9/11, and I can’t wait for the Democrats to gain the White House again, and finally re-instate the credibility and common sense in our country.

Response to EJ If Clinton was so worried about Bin Laden why did he not take him out in the at least 6 times that we know about Clinton having Bin ladan in his sites. Albright hung the phone up on the CIA who called in for an ok to shoot. Oh that is right they told him it would be illegal even thou he was behind the first trade center bombing, but it would be legal to lie under oath, and threaten witnesses. I get it Libs like corruption and Americans dying and other people living under tyranny.
Oh by the way Clinton asked for Authority in 1998 to take out Saddam and never followed through.
The terrorist were here training in 1999 but Clinton did nothing. The libs put up a wall between the FBI and CIA so they could not talk.
Learn History and you will disregard the Liberal party.
and a response to majormajor, your right since the Republicans do not like war either we should call the Libs Anti Free American and the Republicans defenders of the Constitution and America

I wish the Republican congress would start acting like the servants they are -elected by the people and therefore, serving the people. They do not serve the president, he did not appoint them. THEY WERE ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE – LISTEN TO US! Start thinking straight and stop being Lemings following Bush over a cliff of political and social suicide. BRING OUR KIDS HOME AND DO IT NOW! Iraq will survive, it has survived for far more centuries than the U.S. is old. Wake up Republicans and get your head out from under Bushes blood stained thumbs! BRING OUR MILITARY HOME!

Democrats get me sick!
They will not compromise with the President just because of the election. This is REAL.
I believe we have been in Iraq long enough, but give the President something he can work with. When the Democrats don’t get their way they all act out like immature babies. If we acted like that at work, we would get fired!
Posted by: Rene | May 10, 2007, 11:40 am 11:40 am
Response to Ron – Maybe the Libs should listen to the American People and Not George Soros
Posted by: spock | May 10, 2007, 11:41 am 11:41 am
Congressman Ron Paul, the most anti-war member of either house of congress, has been saying that defunding is the way to end this war.
Congressman Paul opposed this war before it started, unlike the Democrats (Kucinich being the exception) who are now opposing it for partisan reasons.

My son is presently serving in Afghanistan Air Force Special Forces. Now the army wants to borrow the air force personal because their simply isnt eneough army military. HELLO Lets have the Afghan government take care of their own country and bow your head in shame Mr Bush because my sons sacrifice simply isnt eneough for you is it? Lets take care of America and you can go live in the Middle East. You want an answer, send the illegal imigrants over there then MABE we will give you American status. Till then dont touch my social security, disability or welfare until you have earned it, its here for my son and his family FIRST.

Diane – Well God Bless you and your son. But I think you are mistaken on an aspect, the reason the airforce is being called to do the extra work is that the libs in Congress are holding the funding. and Clinton cut our Military by more then half.
As far as the Social sercurity and other funding it is the Libs that want to give it to illegals NOT the true conservatives/Republicans.

Find out what ABC did to Democratic candidate Larry Agran in 1992. They are doing the same thing to 2008 Republican candidate Ron Paul. The part about Agran starts at 16:40 but the whole video is a must see if you want to see how the media manipulates you.

The President has “compromised,” if I correctly understand his use of the term, by finally agreeing to the use of benchmarks to evaluate the progress (or lack thereof) in Iraq. I think Rep. McGovern’s bill is largely symbolic, and, while clearly a “feel good” measure for its supporters, is doomed to failure.
But, more to the point, hasn’t there been enough of these largely symbolic bills mandating our immediate withdrawal from Iraq? It’s clear that the President isn’t going to sign any of them, and the Dems in Congress by themselves haven’t the votes to override any veto. If the Dems were not so interested in making symbolic gestures, they would be talking to the Repubs about getting a veto-proof bill passed that a majority of our representatives could agree on. That would require compromise and working with the opposition party, something which was left by the wayside when the current administration took over.

The Military personnel in Iraq believe they are fighting for American Freedom. Unfortunately, they’ve been lied to by the administration and mainstream media. They are working for the neo-con world government agenda who’s enemy is American Sovereignty and liberty.

I am a US Army Soldier who re-enlisted after being out for 8 years, now I am trying to get deployed to Iraq and I was told that I needed to go to school for my new MOS before I could be deployed, but there was not enough money to send me to school for it because The budget is being held up, I feel that the house holding the budget ransom for their own political gain is not only going to keep the deployed troops from being rotated back but it is also keeping the troops here from gaining the neccesary skills to protect us here. I have friends who have been back 4 times and from what I am told the average soldier there has been back at least 2 times. why are these damn liberals holding up funding and leaving us out to dry? Regardless of what you hear most who are there in the combat arms want to be there.(I know it sounds like an unbelievable thought; a soldier who wants to do his job.) but this is how we gain knowledge, advance in our profession and ultimately make us better at our jobs. The media is pushing numbers down everyones throats well try this on for size, more Soldiers lost their lives in Traffic accidents stateside last year than died in Iraq the previous 2 years combined.
