‘Rudy is Wrong,’ Message to Brownback Supporters Pulls No Punches

ABC News’ Julia Bain Reports: Sen. Sam Brownback’s R-Kans., presidential campaign has sent an email to supporters directly criticizing Rudy Giuliani’s stance on abortion, following last night’s GOP debate in South Carolina. David Barron, the South Carolina Chairman of Brownback for President writes, "Rudy is wrong. Like you and me, Senator Sam Brownback is a true believer that there is no ‘choice’ involved in life or death matters".

Brownback has been competing to cast himself as the true conservative choice in the race for the GOP nomination.

The letter links Giuliani with Planned Parenthood, and calls for supporters to,"Please join Senator Brownback in his effort to ensure that Planned Parenthood and Rudy Giuliani are stopped from turning our Republican Party to a pro-abortion party." While Giuliani’s donations to Planned Parenthood in the mid 1990′s are not mentioned, Barron cites a quote from the organization’s president and calls it a, "sad statement" when a leader of an abortion provider, "is praising the leading Republican candidate."

Brownback has avoided directly criticizing Giuliani in the past. When asked at the previous GOP debate if he could support a pro-life GOP nominee, Brownback answered yes, in the spirit of Ronald Reagan and a coalition party. This letter distances Brownback from that statement, saying that, "Senator Brownback believes that the next Republican nominee for president must be pro-life in order to win."
