Edwards takes on Coulter
….ELIZABETH Edwards, that is.
Last night on MSNBC’s "Hardball," which featured conservative provacateur Ann Coulter as a guest, Elizabeth Edwards — the wife of presidential candidate And former Sen. John Edwards, D-NC — called in and challenged the author to stop making personal attacks. Watch the video HERE.
It was pretty compelling:
*
Chris Matthews: You know who’s on the line? Somebody to respond to what you said Edwards yesterday morning — Elizabeth Edwards. She wanted to call in today we said she could. Elizabeth Edwards go on the line you’re on the line with Ann Coulter
Elizabeth Edwards: Hello, Chris.
CM: You wanna say something directly to the person who’s with me?
EE: I’m calling you … in the south when we — when someone does something that displeases us, we wanna ask them politely to stop doing it. Uh – I’d like to ask Ann Coulter — if she wants to debate on issues, on positions — we certainly disagree with nearly everything she said on your show today — um but uh it’s quite another matter for these personal attacks that the things she has said over the years not just about John but about other candidates — it lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time that we need to raise it. So I want to use the opportunity … to ask her politely stop the personal attacks.
Ann Coulter: OK, so I made a joke — let’s see six months ago — and as you point out they’ve been raising money off of it for six months since then.
CM: This is yesterday morning, what you said about him.
AC: I didn’t say anything about him actually either time.
EE: Ann, you know that’s not true. And once more its been going on for sometime.
AC: I don’t mind you trying to raise money. I mean it’s better this than giving $50,000 speeches to the poor.
EE: I’m asking you
AC: Just to use my name on the Web pages…
EE: I’m asking you politely…
AC: … but as for a debate with me, um yeah, sure. Yeah, we’ll have a debate
EE: I’m asking you politely to stop personal attacks.
AC: How bout you stop raising money on the Web page then?
EE: It didn’t start it did not
AC: No you don’t have cause I don’t mind
EE: It did not start with that you had a column a number of years ago
AC: OK, great the wife of a presidential candidate is calling in asking me to stop speaking
CM: Let her finish the point…
AC: You’re asking me to stop speaking stop writing your columns, stop writing your books.
CM: OK, Ann. Please.
AC: OK
EE: You wrote a column a couple years ago which made fun of the moment of Charlie Dean’s death, and suggested that my husband had a bumper sticker on the back of his car that said ask me about my dead son. This is not legitimate political dialogue.
AC: That’s now three years ago
EE: It debases political dialogue. It drives people away from the process. We can’t have a debate about issues if you’re using this kind of language.
(Audience member yells something.)
AC: Yeah why isn’t John Edwards making this call?
CM: Well do you want to respond and we’ll end this conversation?
EE: I haven’t talked to John about his call.
AC: This is just another attempt for –
EE: I’m making this call as a mother. I’m the mother of that boy who died. My children participate — these young people behind you are the age of my children. You’re asking them to participate in a dialogue that’s based on hatefulness and ugliness instead of on the issues and I don’t think that’s serving them or this country very well.
(Audience applauds.)
CM: Thank you very much
Elizabeth Edwards. Do you want to — you have all the time in the world to respond.
AC: I think we heard all we need to hear. The wife of a presidential candidate is asking me to stop speaking. No.
*
Hmmmm. That’s not what I heard Elizabeth Edwards ask Coulter to do, though Coulter is certainly right that the Edwards presidential campaign has used her incendiary comments about him — she essentially called him a "f-ggot" — to raise cash and gin up liberal activists.
I assume most of us would agree that making light of someone’s dead son is beyond the pale…. But what do you think?

Sen. DeMint: GOP Race Could Go Until Convention
Obama Avoids Questions on Contraception Rule
Ann Coulter is Paris Hilton. She is Anna Nicole Smith. She is Inside Edition. She is Judge Judy. She is the sensationalism that gets you on TV in our current culture. If only we could stop and ask the question, “Who cares!?”

Good for Elizabeth Edwards. She was on the moral high ground, and she made her point well. AC is completely out of her element when she has to feign respect for an opponent. Going for the jugular is her M.O. and you just can’t do that to EE.
A few context questions: whose dead son? And what web page is AC referring to?
Isn’t it ironic that this confrontation takes place on Hardball, a show that has a reputation for shouting and abrasiveness?

Elizabeth Edwards is absolutely correct. Ann Coulter has debased the political discussion in this country and has become wealthy doing so. She’s a disgrace.

By her responses on “Hardball” yesterday evening, Ann Coulter has unmistakably shown that she isn’t interested in any serious political dialogue–a repectful exchange of ideas and opinions where one argues merits and drawbacks, and debates the issues. Instead, she’d rather make vicious, vile personal attacks and then loudly complain that SHE’S the victim of censorship or of a fantastic “liberal conspiracy.” Her hate-filled speech isn’t a joke, isn’t humorous, isn’t funny, and clearly shows her pathological hatred for anyone with a different opinion from hers.
Today, Coulter was quoted that she wouldn’t discuss Sen. Edwards any more, except to say (“jokingly,” in her own words) that she wishes he were killed by terrorists. Such a comment is unwarranted, unacceptable, and truly beyond the pale! If any other political commentator with differing views were to make such remarks about the President, the Vice-President, or whomever else, you can bet that such a threat would not be considered as a “joke.” Clearly, Coulter is like a toddler who does anything to call attention to herself just so she can make herself the center of attention. Unfortunately, it’s for all the wrong reasons.

What’s disappointng is that Ann COulter gets so much media exposure in the current market. (Same is true for Paris Hilton). Since news has become entertainment in so many areas, extremists like Coulter have the ability to become wealthy making a mockery of political debate. Even hard core conservatives will grow tired of her antics as she is not a symbol of any family values that most people can stomach.

Ann Coulter can never face anyone on issues because her only issue is making herself rich. My mother taught me many years ago that people who have to make themselves feel better by tearing someone else down are hiding a very deep complex.
Lets hope Ann gets help for her complex soon.

Good for Ann Coulter. Anyone who calls the War on Terror a bumper sticker war deserves hell, as does anyone who takes in $50,000 for a speech on poverty. Has it ever occurred to anyone that people like Ann Coulter are born as a reaction to the disrespectful and vile rhetoric of the Democratic party? Ann was right about the double-standard of what’s acceptable by pointing out Maher saying that he wished Cheney was killed in a terrorist attack. Howard Dean said a few years ago that Republicans all look the same, all act the same, and have never worked an honest day’s work in their lives. The Democrats have loudly protested that Bush “stole” the election, and that he is the world’s #1 terrorist, that he is both an idiot and the world’s most sinister man who tricked everyone into fighting his “war for oil” (so much for not being hateful!). People like Ann Coulter are born as a reactionary response to an equally unhinged left-wing that sees coporate-conspiracies everywhere, and which is desperate to fight “the system” by assailing any and all basic ethics under the pretense of being “challenging” (like Michael Moore), while at the same time decrying the same sort of dishonesty from across the aisle (as evidenced by the vociferous protests against FOX News).

Ann Coulter is an ugly nasty negative person who does not deserve anymore of her fifteen minutes of fame. ABC news and all of the world would be better to ignore her completely as if she feel off of a cliff. The GOP reigned power on this evilness of personal slandering and attacking decent people. Are we any better off? I think not. We need to promote civility and a return to politeness for the good of all. We will reap what we sow. IS her will what we want for AMERICA??? IGNORE HER.

Ann Coulter exploiting the death of a child is sickening, inhumane and ice cold. If she can make fun of that there is no human kindness in her. And no reason to listen to her poor, mean spirited opinions. She needs to reflect on what is important in life and what is not. A child’s life is one of the great gifts of God.

Elizabeth Edwards IS grace under pressure. The fact that her request seems to be lost on Ann is no surprise.
It is beyond me why any network invites AC to appear on their programs. The only way to hold her own is by proving she’s an idiot everytime she opens her mouth – it’s time to take her off of the network guest list. And comparing her to Paris is an insult even to Paris.

Bravo, Ann Coulter!! Once again you have proved your critics correct – you are a cold, ruthless individual who doesn’t give a rip about others. You certainly could make your point with different words, but you continue to spew your hate and ignorance with childish, immature ways. You’re like a middle school girl – catty, selfish, and NASTY. Perhaps AC has not realized that instead of helping the Republicans, she hurting their cause. Thanks Elizabeth for your courage to take a stand and call a bully a bully.

But, I consider myself an average American and I’ve never heard of Ann Coulter until this morning. I think she will be easy for me to forget. I can hope that all the other millions of average Americans will find her forgettable as well.

Isn’t it tawdry that Chris Matthews secretly set up an ambush against his guest? And libs approve? Ann Coulter has a lot of class and has been incredibly effective at pointing out the hypocrisies of liberals. I find it ironic that Ann requotes the hateful and mean remarks of liberals in her dialog and it upsets the libs. Like the libs laughed and cheered at the Mahr statement that V.P. Cheney should have been killed in Afghanistan… then when Ann throws it back at the libs they somehow don’t “get” it and fail to laugh. THAT is ironic indeed. I wonder if Chris Matthews or Mrs. Edwards even “get” it. I bet not.

Posted by: Dmullis | June 27, 2007, 9:19 am 9:19 am
While controversy draws attention to important issues, people who simply use cruel, pointless and heartless remarks to get attention and advance thier own careers shouldn’t be supported by any media much less shows of the caliber of ABC news. Ann Coulter is such a person. She doesn’t encourage dialogue on issues, she grand stands to promote herself and sell more products. That’s not necessarily offensive in general, but stooping to wishing people were dead because she disagrees with their views is extremely offensive – ditto for Bill Mahr. For any media outlet to give people who use tactics like her a forum sends the wrong message to the public and degrades the integrity of the show. And for the record I am a life long Republican, but remarks like those of Ann Coulter make me embarrassed to be aligned with this party. Conservativism is not mutually exclusive with compassion, respect, integrity and honor.

Ann Coulter is a disgrace to the human race! She is obnoxious and has absolutely no class. To respond to a classy, graceful woman like Elizabeth Edwards in the manner in which she did shows exactly how despicable she really is. How does she sleep at night knowing she has trashed everyone around her when she needs to look in the mirror and start with herself first. She’s has a horse face and is quite unattractive for starters. She then opens her mouth and turns from unattractive to downright ugly. Get her off the airways.

It would be an extreme pleasure to watch the she-devil Ann Coulter try to debate any of the Dems or Reps running for president. That would show how ignorant she really is. She would have nothing if not her bad mouth. I wish someone would take her on. She wouldn’t last past the first subject. The only thing she is good at is back-biting and vicious gossip. Ann Coulter appeals to and exploits the base instincts of the conservative base. It is a very ugly discourse, but she needs to be shouted down by every thinking person on this planet every time she opens her mouth. She is to political diologue what the WWF is to wrestling. Better yet, she should be shunned and ignored. No legitimate news outlet should give her a microphone.

People like Coulter and the hate they spew are why many people are leaving the Republican Party. Ethical, noble Republicans like Reagan or Goldwater have to be rolling in their graves.
The Republican Party is about building the greatness of America, limited government, etc. It wasn’t built on hate and fear-mongering.
Coulter has no interest in dialogue–she is only interested in herself.
Posted by: Jim | June 27, 2007, 9:46 am 9:46 am
Ann doesn’t seem to think it is funny when others make even a slightly negative remark about a conservative. She goes into mental frenzies. But people are not supposed to call her out on her remarks. Just like when Rush referred to Chelsea as the Whitehouse dog when she was 12 there is never anything off limits for those family value conservatives.
They are completely God-less filth of the earth. Their souls are as evil as any terrorist.

The reason Ann Coulter comes back around in the news cycle every few months is because she’s mean.
An opinion columnist who repeatedly launches personal attacks on her subjects will do so in a flamboyant manner. That’s what makes news these days.
Ann Coulter has no soul and the mainstream media is only feeding her huge ego.

Libs just don’t get it. They say things that are “beyond the pale” every day and think nothing of it. Anyone with a conservative point of view is denigrated and told they are stoopid. For them there is no other possible explanation.
Listen up Libs… Ann Coulter is a Conservative – not a Republican. She represents a VIEWPOINT not a PARTY. I know this is hard for you to grasp so you may want to get a group of your friends together and discuss it.
Ann’s STYLE makes use of verbal hand grenades that make a point like a light saber and many of us find them HUMEROUS. The reason Libs HATE her is because they can’t grasp what she’s saying AND because they are constantly looking to be offended so they can sue somebody.
Libs are just whiney little people….

I can respect a difference in opinion and maybe Ann c. just likes to to enrage people but she is so off base and divisive. She has no concept of what real liberals think. She is someone who takes any extreme view and takes it a the gospel. Liberals like conservatives come in all shapes and sizes and do not have the extreme views that AC promotes they do. She is so offensive that she is enough to amke anyone stop listening.

Over the past three years Coulter has called Edwards a “f*gg*t”, joked about the death of the Edwards’ child, and this week Coulter said on national TV that she wished John Edwards would be killed by terrorists.
Couter’s last book claimed that liberals were “Godless”, and Coulter claims to be a devout Christian. Elizabeth Edwards asked Coulter to stop making personal attacks on the Edwards family, which would be the Chistian thing to do (calling people names and wishing them dead is hardly political discourse).
Couter disingenuously tried to say that that Edwards is trying to silence her. Asking someone to stop saying hurtful personal things is not censorship. Coulter is a law school graduate and a smart person, and she is surely capable of making political arguments without saying hateful things – so why doesn’t she? Sadly, she thrives (and makes millions) on the attention that saying cruel things and being “controversial” brings her.

Elizabeth Edwards is a role model for the best way to respond to adults who never got past the temper tantrum stage. If we all tried to speak as she did when confronted with hate, envy and meanness, we could make the world a better, safer, saner place.
I credit Barack Obama for kick-starting this anti-divisive movement in his 2004 Convention speech, but we all need to do our share. The Ann Coulters of the world have freedom of speech, but so do the rest of us. We don’t have to sink to Ann’s level of discourse to point out our disagreement and disapproval, but we do need to point it out, especially for the sake of the next generation.

She has an education many would envy and makes fun of others with comparable educations who choose to use their brains for the better good instead of the hatred she spews. If she is a person of such high morals as she claims, she needs to “search the scriptures to see if these things be true” that she preaches. And by the way,she may not be able to help how she looks but she is probably the least modest female in the media today. With such short, tight skirts, and the constant crossing and uncrossing if the legs, its no wonder to me the men keep having her on. I wonder at the jokes at her expense they tell after she leaves.

What would little Johnny do if Osama-bin-Laden called him a name? Probably have Liz call the media outlets and ask him to be nicer or we will read his name in CHURCH? OOOOOOOOH, I am sure that OBL would be shaking in his cave!!! The two faced Democratic Party idiots need to get on the same page when they preach poverty to the poor. Tell the truth!! Democrats are the lowest form of SOCIALISTS you can find in America and THAT was confirmed by Mrs. Bill Clinton in a speaeh last week, where she said She wanted to redistribute the wealth in America by taking from the RICH and “GIVE” to the poor. Sort of like Robin Hood as a Communist!!! While competeing for the highest job in the FREE world, they prove themselves to be consummate liars, thieves and social deviants, making the GOP look pure and holy!! It’s prett sad that so many people in this country fall for that pathetic whiney liberalism. America!!! Time to grow a new SPINE!! Teach your children that they not only have rights, they have RESPONSIBILITIES also! Our form of goverment only works when people put their shoulder to the wheel of Democracy and make it move. Ann Coulter is the Paris Hilton of political analysis. She’s a pretty dumb blond who thinks her opinions matter. She has taken what could have been a legit career in political analysis/commentary and turned herself into a running joke. She gets intellectually outclassed so staggeringly fast in serious debates that she resorts to grade-school argument tactics. After watching her on TV an reading some of her columns, there is little doubt that her problem can be traced to a lack of intelligence. It really is as simple as that.

Ann-orexic Coulter is presented on TV by such as Hardball to expose the deepseated flaws in the so-called religious right. Most of her groupies, like Ann, can speak only in the full scream format as they try to drown out any comment that might disagree with them or present some rational thought. I deeply regret, as do most of those preceding me, that there is no longer any form of rationality in the conservative camp. These people have no place in the Republican Party.

the world will be a wonderful place the day liberals understand “satire”… Ann Coulter does say some outrageous things but that doesn’t change the fact that she is right about most of the stuff she says… i watched that interview last night and i too was offended by what she said about john edwards in a terrorist attack.. that is until I had to find out on my own the entire context of the comment… turns out she was using it as satire against bill maher’s comment who actually meant it by the way… it was fun watching AC destroy CM and EE whenever they tried to get her on issues – it was like watching larry holmes box an infant – complete destruction.

I think AC is a nobody with apparent connections to certain MSM who seem to follow her around to make much ado about what amounts to be nothing more than a cheap floozy making shocking statements on national television. She has absolutely NO substance on any issues other than shock value… she certainly can raise the ire of those who are for getting this nation back on track. No doubt she is an educated woman, but my question is this: educated in what? All I see her honing her skills in is that of creating good shock-interviews. Any loud-mouth drunk can shock a restaurant by screeching out racial slurs or derogatory remarks about the chef. Frankly, I am surprised, at this point in the game, that the MSM even gives this floozy the time of day… let’s move on to matters of importance, not cheap showmanship.

I was surprised by Mrs. Edwards pleading Ann Coulter to stop personal attacks. Where is she living? this is American Politics we are talking about. It is down right ugly. And she better not mess with people like Ann Coulter. They are a different breed called Conservatives, and can be mean and demeaning. For them America means they can say anything they want. No morals no decency. That’s the way they are raised to hate and spew hate at every opportunity they get. It’s the American way. Back in the 90s I remember respected conservative Dick Armey asking Bill Clinton to get his body guards when he comes to North Corolina or he will be shot. Now thats really what American Politics is all about. Hey you liberals out there stop fighting, this is a Conservative nation where ugly politics rule. Kneel down in front of your conservative masters before it’s too late.

Ann Coulter speaks only to hear her own voice. She is ANNOYING, get rid of her. I would rather hear a dog bark all through the night than to hear her WACKED opinions or see her skeleton mug in the news!!!

It is obvious that Ms. Ann Coulter is a hurting woman. Anyone can see that she has some major issues in life. The forced laughs, the personal attacks, and the hiding behind the shades are are just visible signs of a woman with a painful past. Is she really that cold and cruel? I’ve seen her speak on many occassions, and she appears to have a bipolar disorder. The bottom line is that she needs help. But, this was also the first time I’ve seen her visibly shaken by the comments of Mrs. Elizabeth Edwards. Perhaps there’s still hope for her.

I didn’t even know who Ann Coulter was as I try to avoid listening to any “pundits”. But I do watch GMA every morning before work and was horrified by her comment. I don’t care which side of whatever you’re “on”, that kind of comment is not acceptable, it was disgraceful. Then last night as I was flipping channels I saw Ms. Coulter on a TV show and stopped to watch – momentarily, and it happened to be the moment Elizabeth Edwards called in. I was cheering Ms. Edwards on as she made one valid point after another, while Ms. Coulter was condescending and arrogant, flipping her hair like my 16yr old who also doesn’t give a hoot about what anyone else thinks! Ms. Coulter had a perfect opportunity to use her voice but she chose not to. In fact, she reminds me of my teenagers > who have all gone through a phase where they think as parents we’re “STUPID”, until they mature and all of a sudden we get smarter! Way to Go Elizabeth!!! Keep up the good fight to have a dialogue about the issues facing us and the upcoming election. WE NEED THAT in order to choose the best man or woman for the job. Good luck!

Susan, are you aware that the reason Coulter fires back at the Libs is because the libs are the ones that use hate speech and personal attacks on a regular basis, ie; as did Mahr in saying V.P. Cheney should have been killed in Afghanistan – and the libs approved? Her point is that libs can say anything, make any hate speech, say anything in a mean spirited manner (have you heard Harry Reid lately?) , but if someone says the exact same thing about libs, it is sooo unacceptable. Ann Coulter has more class in her little finger than libs do in their whole hateful body and minds. The issue with the Edwards child was old news from 3 years ago, when Edwards thought nothing of using his dead son for political advantage, and I think it was a complete scam initiated by Chris Matthews to produce a bit of chicanery for the extremist left to lap up. This show was a tawdry lib media hijacking that you libs evidently also approve of. As what to say to Ann Coulter??? GO GIRL!!! THANK YOU FOR ENGLIGHTENING US ON THE SHEER HYPOCRISY OF THE EXTREMIST LEFT WING LIBS.

Its no wonder liberals see conspiricies everywhere – just read the Washington’s post articles on King Cheney. More tax cuts for the rich – who is paying for this war – the middle class once again.

The fact that Ann Coulter is ever taken seriously is frightening indeed! But what do you expect from a culture that made the Jerry Springer show a hit, Paris Hilton a celebrity, and violence acceptable in movies and video games. Ann Coulter is a sick, twisted and hateful individual who has truly wasted her education and opportunity to positively contribute to society. I’m disgusted by any medium that gives her venemous attacks a forum. How about trying to educate the American public rather than appeal to the lowest common denominator. When will we demand that this kind of hate mongering end?

This hypocrisy is hilarious. Ann Coulter makes stupid comments and liberals throw their arms up in outrage for lowering the political dialogue when liberal politicians and in the media have wished for Cheney’s death (Bill Maher), compared Bush to Hitler (Moveon.org), called black Republicans outrageously discriminatory names, etc. Mr. Tapper is exactly right, this is an attempt for the Edwards campaign to get support from the Dems’ liberal base which Edwards has been trying to do for months (the first to back out of the Fox debate, immediately condemning Coulter earlier in the year, and now this) This is political theater and its the left just as much if not more than the right who has lowered the political discourse.

I heard a great quote from one of the ministers for the Davis/Potter family over the weekend. He stated to the effect that we have a choice about how we deal with tragedies and life’s problems.
“It will either make you better or bitter.”
I don’t know what happened to A.C. that she spews such venom instead of talking about it.

Exactly what has this “woman” and I surly use that term lightly, ever done positive? Has she ever helped anyone except herself? She writes hate books plain and simple. So what that makes her credible????? Why is she given air time? You can debate the issues, you can dislike other candidates but attacking someone through the use of their dead sixteen year old son, well she must be pals with Dick Cheney. The two should really get married and wallow in their stew of evil together.
I wrote Chris Matthews and told him he sould be ashamed, he gave this person one full hour to spew their hatred on national television. Nice. I will not watch his show anymore. Does she have a right to spew hatred, absolutely, that’s what a free country means, we can all speak our minds. And until this administration it was without being arrested, phone tapped, investigated and you name it. Now it’s a free country for the right wing hate mongers, but if anyone says Bush and Cheney are liars and crooks, somehow were unpatriotic and we don’t support the troops. I for one would love more then anything to see all three of these people as well as Bush’s entire administration all in military uniforms walking down those hot dirty dirt roads in Iraq, “protecting Americans” as Bush so much likes to espouse. Could you see Coulter being asked to do something positive? She would probably laugh and say that people in her position simply tell other people how to live their lives. They don’t do labor they simply spew crap out of their mouths and the rest of us are suppose to shut up and listen. Not me thanks.

What makes the whiny libs maddest about Coulter is that they know she is right when she says she has made more money saying Edwards gives her a gaydar alert than Edwards does putting here comments on his web site and asking for money. But what I remember most about Edwards is when his wife called Hardball when Coulter was on and whined about wanting Coulter to debate here husband, but when Coulter said she would be happy to debate Edwards his wife backed down.

“Every time I have heard Ann Coulter she sounds uneducated and ignorant and not worth listening to….”
And that is exactly why I want her to talk MORE! Every time she speaks, she turns off more and more people. Her only support is from the rabid conservatives who believe her s***. So keep speaking, Ann! Your little followers will keep buying your books and you can enjoy your “best seller” status all the way to the bank. But influencing people to agree with you? Never happen cuz all the ones who are crazy enough to already do.
And I had to laugh at the comments about how ole Chris Matthews “set up” Ann and the hypocrisey of the “lib” media! Bill O’Riley does that every day, along with Hannity, Brit Hume, and all the other Faux News superstars. And let’s not forget Rush. It was a setup by Matthews. My guess to get ratings for his show, he certainly cannot get them by kissing up to the Demos. MSNBC is about a left as Fox is right. At least you can get both sides on Fox. Mr Edwards has used his wifes health, children and his late son, he brought them in an now he is crying about it. If you think Coulter is bad, what about Comedy Central and an Bill Maher. Amazing what you can get away with if you call it “comedy”.

After I was done, I moved my loan application over to WAMU. If Chris Matthews wants to give a legitimate stage for the witch called Ann Coulter, I will not support the sponsers of his shows.
Ann Coulter is the biggest “nothing” in the polictical arena today. Her views are shared with 5% of this country (I am sure that is over shooting reality), but this 5% needs to get together and move to an island and live out their days is the glory of hatred that they spew.
Chris Matthews should be ashamed for having this witch on his show, and all of us should stop supporting his efforts. We need people who bring us together—not split us further apart.

Let me see….Bill Maher says it’s a shame that VP Cheney was not killed by a terrorist in Afghanistan and Pretty Boy John Edwards doesn’t say “unacceptable,” nor does his Mommy (I mean his wife) call on his bahalf to say “knock it off.” But when Ann Coulter, tongue firmly in cheek, sends the volley back at them about PB John and the terrorists, all “heck” breaks out. Chris Matthews set her up, just as he set the entire Republican presidential posse up at the “debate” by asking some of the stupidest questions “of all time.” It’s clear that Matthews inensely dislikes Coulter. It’s also clear that PB John is devoid of personal courage. Elizabeth may have character, but the entire event last night smacked of set-up. Coulter handled it well. Pray that a one-on-one debate between PB John and Ann Coulter can be arranged. Questions will be given by Sean Hannity and Chris Matthews. Show the debate on both Fox and MSNBC.

While Mrs Edwards displayed a lot of class, Ann Coulter on the other had was crass, patronizing, juvenile and extremely cruel. If Ann Coulter has nothing concrete to contribute to the real issues in politics today, she should shut up. It was a delicious moment to see Ann Coulter squirming in her seat. Asking someone to be respectful and to honestly discuss issues is not censorship. It reflects poorly on the integrity of true journalists and/or political analysts that AC is allowed to appear as an equal. And, it reflects poorly on the decision-makers at ABC that she is an invited guest. You have underestimated the intelligence and civilty of your viewers. What has happened to journalism in the US?

Holy Cow! The comments being made from both spectrums are so out there. I am a democrat who is about to change affiliations and go independant, I don’t like whats going on with either political party. This thing about Ann Coulter and the reactions is so funny. I agree with some of the points that Ann Coulter points out, she does have some valid points. I think people like her are needed only to spark debate and wake up Americans from their apathy. We are like the frog in a container which is heating up gradually and he doesn’t realize he is slowly being boiled alive. We as Americans have to really find a balanced system that can be taken from the conservatives and some from the liberal point of view. Not as lukewarm Americans that are on a fence, but to really take a stance on what we beleive in. People we middle Americans outnumber those who are in power, we can make a difference if we vote responsibly and not as cattle that the
politicos think we are. We need to say enough and negate the electoral voting, and elect by true popular voting. We are not the ignorant folks of yester year who could not read. the electoral vote is atiquated, get rid of it and we wont’t have to be devided as red states and blue states but united as a people who really care who gets into the White House, Congress and the Senate. We need to stop whining and complaining and start being a nation of ACTION…So I thank the Ann Coulters of the world who raise the hackles, at least I see that we are still aware…

Hi Olga,
The reason we have an electoral college instead of direct election is because of the smaller states wanted it (as well as several other things) put in the US Constitution before they would sign it. And they also made sure it would be very hard to change the constitution so both the electoral college and stuff like two senators for both the smallest and largest states. This is not to say I am against direct elections, just trying to explain why things are like this.

Ms. Edwards can’t commit him to a debate with AC, she said he didn’t know she called. Her concern was the personal attacks against the whole family, not just John Edwards. He is the candidate and should be the target, not the whole family. I think John Edwards should send her some flowers or something. AC seems to be obsessed with him.

Ann Coulter enjoys displaying her hatefulness and stupidity on a national and international stage. Mrs. Edwards showed class, style and maturity, all three things Coulter has none of. Basically, Coulter’s opinion is just that, her opinion, and it should not be taken as anything else except a narrow-minded, hateful attitude fostered by a complete lack of intelligence.

Just because someone has the right to say something (which they do in this country) doesn’t mean it is right to say it. I guess decency just doesn’t exist for some people in the name of freedom of speech. They get all hung up on their “rights” and forget the more important issue of treating each other with respect. But there I go again using a word that doesn’t mean much to many people these days. I know we all have different ideas of what’s right or wrong for this country but we have got to work together not against each other if we really want to move forward. Hatefulness is not a good attitude for anyone and Ann Coulter might want to remember that.

I don’t care who said what. The point is that we have lost our way with our political process. Let’s focus on what the candidates stand for and not about their personal lives. Would you like your personal lives aired out if you were applying for a job? I think not! Also don’t just slam a party’s idea just because they are not in your party and say it won’t work. Come up with a solution before you say that your opponents ideas are not feasible.

I completely wrote Ann off when she claimed the widows of 9/11 got off on their husband’s deaths. That was just sick. Fact is she is THE most insulting of any of them. At the top of the list. Taken it all a bit too far and it is entirely too ugly. Go Liz.
I would like to suggest the conservatives read back over these remarks and see which side really is a bit nastier against the other side. It typically tends to read them. This coming from a Centrist. Most name calling seems to come from that side of God.

Oh, yes, those Edwards are on high moral ground, as they go around the country talking about poverty and then return home to their 30,000 sq. ft. house. They show high moral principles, too. Like how Mr. Edwards insisting on running for President while his wife undergoes cancer treatments. After all, your wife isn’t too much to sacrifice for your political career. And then, set up a political rival on a TV show by getting your wife to do the dirty work. Yes, these are great americans, ones I would want my children to emulate. (For you liberals, that means to look up to and copy)

The picture you placed atop this article suggests that Mrs. Edwards engaged in the same level of discourse as that vile shrew. She did not. She was well composed and polite.

Ann Coulter loves to give it but she can’t take criticisms of herself for a second. She lies, twists, distorts, and of course says sick things and gets away with it like it’s nothing. She’s said that liberals are ridiculous because all they do is name call and have no substance and think they are better than everyone else. well Ann criticizes the otherside to the 10th degree with lies, distortions, bigotry, cruelness and so forth. Where the otherside for the most part are civilized(i’m talking about political pundits). have you ever seen a liberal pundit being interviewed and saying “i wish W. was blown up by terrorists instead of becomming president! yeah!” I mean come on now. Who is Ann fooling? If she was a comedian than fine she can be an obnoxious lunatic but she’s a political pundit! She makes her side look like rabid attack dogs. And if Ann couldnt lie, ditort, and attack than she’d never be on Fox news, other t.v. shows, write books and articles. Oh Ann she’s such a stain on the conservative side of the aisle.

Judging by most of the comments here- it seems like people are missing the point, with this tit-for-tat bickering; Do we want our politacal discourse in this country to at least attempt to move to a higher ground, or just devolve into Jerry Springer? I’m sure some would love it. “Never wrestle with a pig; you both get dirty and the pig likes it.”

I would think that the Republicans would get together and ask Ann not to claim to be a member of their party. It’s tough to make that party look any worse, but she succeeds.
Posted by: Chris Bond | June 27, 2007, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm
You know, I don’t agree with both sides as far as the “personal bashing” goes. But, with that being said, I say this. If you can’t take the heat of being in the political spotlight, money, power, lies, then just get out.” One thing that I can respect about Ann Coulter, is that I know what she is, what she is about (although I don’t agree with the verbal method at times), who she’s for, who she’s not for, and that she really could care less what anyone thinks about her. People have to understand that that is her job. That is why she sells LOTS of books, and we aren’t. Everyone is human and deserves respect yes, but I think it would’ve been best for Ms. Edwards to not put herself into that verbal match with Ms. Coulter. The one with the clear conscience is usually silent and lets actions speak louder than words, so that wasn’t a slick move on Edwards’ part to call in. In closing, ALL politicians (wives included), I don’t care what Party, have dirty laundry regarding money, power, infidelity, lying, etc., and they’re going to do anything, say anything, and yes, use any “touching part” of their personal lives to get their hands on that “Golden Scepter” called the White House.

Ann Coulter is nothing short of an embaressment for the Republican party. Constructive dialogue is one thing, this woman seems to blast people just to get attention and that’s simply the mark of an unintelligent human being who has no other way of expressing themselves.

Forget Ann Coulter, she is commanding face time to get our attention off of our present “administration”! Check out the REPUBLICAN Senators who are coming out against Bush and Cheney about the direction those two arrogant jerks are taking our country. If you voted for Bush & Cheney in 2000 and 2004, face up to it and take steps to know more about the candidates you are voting for and not vote “YOUR PARTY”! Bet you’ll think twice in 2008!

I am disgusted by all politics in general. This country has taken a very bad turn when we start celebrating people like Ann Coulter and allowing her to participate in the media! It doesn’t matter which side you are on…they both act this way. She attacks people at their lowest point…911 widows, Edward’s deceased son, etc. Stop allowing this “Godless”, mean-spirited and cruel woman on your shows, ABC! She obvioulsy has no self-esteem as she needs to attack others to make herself look good in the public eye or get attention.

I find it interesting that the party that claims to be the “family values” party so willingly yields the moral high ground. Telling those who suggest cleaning things up to grow a backbone is equivalent to justifying moral decay.

Airmanc5- who cares about another terrorist attack? This country is rotting from the inside out and we are all to blame- Democrats and Republicans both. But, all you can do is say “what about the terrorists, what about the terrorists?” That is exactly what Bush and Co. want you to say, so you won’t notice how bad things have really become. The terrorists are the least of this country’s worries.

Laura Denton – You are so right.
As for the libs, can’t take the truth, Edwards is a coward, send his wife in to defend him. What he going to do if god forbid he wins, send his wife to Iran and say stop insulting us. Edwards hates the Gays and Minorities, made his money off the backs of working people. Ann Coulter never insulted him, actually she said she was not going to insult, so Edwards took as him being called Gay, so that is insulting, so he does not like Gay’s?
Now Ann C. never said she was a Republican. Next she is not running for office, she has freedom of speech. So whats the problem????
No lib complains about their members of goverment calling our troops dumb, Nazi’s, terrorist’s or Bill Mahr about the vice-President. The libs are so full of Hate they do not see themselves, they Race Bait, call everyone who don’t agree with them hater, Nazis and so forth.
Mrs Edwards seemed like a witch and no respect minds you of Kerry’s wife.
Oh by the way Edwards is exploiting the unfortunate death of their son, not everyone else.
Edwards is trying to use Ann to up his numbers on the Lib side and that is all its about.
Ann was ambushed she had no plans to talk about Edwards.

Regarding speeches, everybody is giving the fee for charity unless you cant maintain your survival expenditures like sending too much pay hospitalization for your wife who is suffering from cancer ailment.
Moreover, it must be supporting the peoples need not by money but by services we can render from our very most access we may afford.
You see, Every one needs money, the trouble is we cannot make you rich, if you wanna be rich then struggle to earn and we may send you to the nearest workshop seminar available everywhere in towns and cities.
For close, do you have any idea about loosing a speeches where people just ignore you just because of giving and sharing your dreams ahead from we ???
Why dont you give your own speeches and I’ll be the one who will listen from you though ????

I’m surprised that Republicans in general don’t make you ashamed of being a Republican.
You’re proud of George Ryan, Bob Taft, Jack Abramoff, Scooter Libby or any of the other hundred or so Republicans convicted of corruption in the last few years?
You’re proud of Tom Delay, Lawrence Novak, Nathan Taylor or any of the other Republican currently under indictment for corruption?
You’re proud of Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Pete Domenici or any of the other Republicans currently under investigation?
Exactly how corrupt, dishonest, or immoral does a Republican have to be before you are ashamed of them?

The first time I read Ann Coulter’s work, I didn’t like her meanspiritness and bigotry, but thought, “okay, freedom of the press,” and didn’t read any more of her crap.
After 9-11, however, she kept attacking the victims and workers affected by the 9-11 and I thought that was way over the line marking common decency and humanity. The last straw was when she was harping over the 9-11 Widows and Children.
She is not a human being because she lacks a soul – incapable of showing any compassion, love, decency, or any shred of humanity.
Mrs. Edwards is perfectly capable of calling Coulter out for her untoward remarks, and kudos for Mrs. Edwards in keeping her cool. Such a shame the conversation was that short – then again, it was long enough to show Coulter’s true colors to the public and that’s always a good thing.
I wonder if Coulter would react as a normal mother would if someone made a bad joke about her own child’s death? Why do I keep thinking she wouldn’t care?

Why is anyone bringing up liberals or conservatives, republicans or democrats? Does it really matter what particular political affiliation exists when it comes to discussing the disgusting, shameful, hateful, stupid remarks of a person who is an insult to the human race? SHE’s the one who says these insults. SHE’s the one who repeats these insults. I don’t care what group she says she’s a part of — I’m still taking her to task for what SHE says because SHE’s the one responsible for them.
She is a hateful, vile, ignorant piece of an under-rock life form. Every time she opens her mouth, she proves once again just what a complete waste of air she is. What AC said was out of line. But I’m so tired of the double standard of the left. They can spew all the hatred they want and it’s ok but if the right says anything we are considered intolerant. How about both sides being tolerant and quit bickering. Last I heard there was this thing called “Free speech”. Does that only apply to the left?
Posted by: Laura | June 27, 2007, 3:56 pm 3:56 pm
Free speech is an invaluable right, but it’s how you use it that defines who and what you are. Coulter’s uses viciousnes to cover up her lack of intelligence and willingness to outright lie — even when confronted with her own printed words. Tim Russert, for one, has called her on her untruths more than once. And for those who bemoaned her being “bushwhacked” — she would have, and has done, the same thing given the opportunity. The War on Terror is not a bumpersticker war, but our going into Iraq had nothing to do with terrorists until this administration turned it into a recruiting ground.

I’m sure Ann Coulter wouldn’t want someone calling her names or talking about her dead child. Does Ann Coulter thinks she’s cute with this stuff? I want to thank Chris Matthews for showing us the true side of ann coulter. I thought about the program for a while afterwards and have come to the following conclusions. In general, she came across to me as a teen-ager. One of the blogs refers to her as ann-erexic and after her many “chubby” references in discourse, I believe she really does have a problem with weight. The constant hair tossing is very much a teen’s call for attention. The short skirt and constant leg crossing reminded me of the movie scene with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas–again, a call for attention. After Elizabeth Edwards called Ann on her performance, the sun glasses went on as a way of screening herself from the criticism. The very rapid speech and not directly answering the questions–again, very teen-ager behavior. She prides herself on being biased, prejudiced, and closed minded; and she has the nerve to call others godless.

It’s shame that people can’t distinguish between legitimate poltical disagreement and shameless personal attack, which is probably where Ann Coulter’s ‘base’ come from. Someone is buying those vile, hateful rants.
There are legitimate issues in whether Bush won the election, his reasons for going into Iraq, and his administration’s competency. That debate is the essence of democracy.
But there is no excuse for gleeful remarks about the death of another’s child. Yet apparently some can’t tell the difference, and the AC’s of the world make money by selling hate to those who can’t.

It’s a shame that Active Patriot can’t get it through his head that calling Bush a political thief, the world’s #1 terrorist, and that he starts wars for oil is just as vile and hateful as anything the ‘pubs have put out, if not more as it’s been protested louder and more constantly. It’s not a legitimate political disagreement. Approximately 1 in 4 Democrats believes 9/11 to be an inside job. They’re unhinged lunatics who will stop at nothing. These ARE shameless political attacks (and the Dems think the ‘pubs are bad for fear-mongering? Yeesh), NOT legitimate disagreement.

Thank you Elizabeth Edwards. Not that I’m a John Edwards fan, I am just so tired of Ann Coulter spewing her baloney. Legitimate discussion or debate of issues is what we have to get back to in American politics and not this personal attack stuff. I’m sorry that ABC sees fit to even have Ann Coulter on their Good Morning America program. The more the media caters to her hateful banter the more they attempt to legitimize her – which simply isn’t possible.

Mrs. Edwards has a lot of class, in the way she handled herself against Ann Coulter. We are just a middle class construction worker family who vote. She handled what the woman said a whole lot better than I would have. The woman is doing all this talking to sell her book, and by golly she is doing it. The smart educated american people will see her for what she is, a touble maker trying to make a name for herself. Just give it a little time and she will be gone like all the other idiots who run their mouths and say nothing. The only problem with Ann Coulter is she is saying hurtful things and this should be sensored by the media. She is nothing but a trouble maker and it bothers me that she is getting all this attention. I think she owes Mrs. Edwards a very big apology for the meaness she is spouting.

Ann Coulter has a right to her opinion, she even has a right to voice that opinion. That’s part of what makes America and why so many want to live here. Ann Coulter seems like an intelligent person and I understand that she received a quality education. Unfortunately, while growing up and getting her education, no one bothered to try to attempt to teach her respect and common sense. During all of her attacks, which admitedly I know next to nothing about, only caught today’s segment, she has neither. I would also guess that she doesn’t have children or much of a family because a person couldn’t make remarks about someone dying or should have died. I am the mother of two small children whol has to live with the death of their father every day. Know one deserves to die because of their political beliefs, even Ann Coulter. I agree, we have to stand up to the bullys of this world, but please at some point, she just simply needs her mouth cleaned out with soap.

Why are you giving Ann Coulter access to the media?, she has done nothing to offer her opinion as any type of expert, or, anyone that counts.
Spot covering her and lets talk about something real.

ABC News should not take Ann Coulter,s comments out of context, she made a good point useing quotes from Bill Mehr.

Everyone knows that Anne Coulter is nothing more than a piece of poor trash. She’s not that great of an editor, so she uses her fat mouth to sell books. What she said about John Edwards and his son is simply appauling! It’s also alarming that no one from the Republican party has denounced her trash talk, but then again we should not be surprised as most of Republicans feel the same way. However the media is just as much to blame as she is. They allow her on every conservative show to spew her venom. It’s a shame that Elizabeth Edwards is battling incurable cancer and has to deal with this blond bimbo! Anne just remember, what goes around comes around. Mrs Edwards I’m praying for you and your family!

Ann Coulter is simply a disgusting human being. My God, I cannot believe the media would allow such despicable comments to be aired on their networks! I wasn’t sure exactly who I would be looking forward to seeing in the Presidential campaigns, but if the Edwards’ team has as much class and dignity as Mrs. Edwards alone, it is going to be a great election year. Ann Coulter, shame on you, you are disgusting and ugly by the words you spew. Try having an intelligent conversation for once.

I got to laugh at all you libs insulting Ann, you complain that she insults but yet all of you libs are insulting her worse then she has ever.
Hypocrisy is the golden rule of libs!!!
She is an intelligent and sencer lady who does not hide behind lib political correctness.
Lets see the libs ambushed her, she was there to talk about her book, but she handled herself with class. Edwards should be ashamed for using his wife as an attack dog. Very Presidential YEAH RIGHT!!!!!

Making negative comments about the Bush administration is not “hateful.” It is a legitimate statement of belief in a functional democracy–even if it is taken to level where they are accused of being war criminals, for instance. This is simply not analagous to Coulteresque rant. Sorry right wingers; unless someone goes off on the Bush twins–you’ll just have to come up with something else.

I am done with ABC and Good Morning America. Since Charles Gibbson left, the 4 idiots running that show are a embarrassment to ABC. The final straw was to let that idiot Coulter have any air time. I am glad so many papers got rid of her! She is the worst thing ABC could let on the air. Hear me ABC… I am done with Good Morning America. There is no place to turn any more for the news. You want a younger audience… you got it. You have turned your backs on loyal views of many years to be grab ratings. Good bye!

Let me see if I can do something to purge the taint here. I’m a conservative Republican. Now you can label me “religious right” and put me in my box.
Elizabeth Edwards is right.
Ann Coulter is wrong.
The whole thing is disgusting.
I don’t CARE what her motives are; Elizabeth Edwards makes a valid point. How are we ever going to have meaningful political discourse in this country if we allow it to descend to that level?
True, sometimes political novices or the unsophisticated fall for the pandering and disgustingly disengenuous pitches we hear every election season. And yes, the media, especially television, often edits, condenses, and packages complicated issues in a manner that is, to put it mildly, deceitful.
“People tend to get the government they deserve,” the old axiom goes. Be astute. Pay attention. Do your homework. Study the issues. Decide for yourselves.
But how do personal attacks and trivializing personal tragedies elevate the political discourse? How does it motivate the politically naive to sharpen their discernment by following the campaign more closely?
When people like Ann Coulter create such a foul stench around an already-unpalatable process, it only serves to heighten the apathy and disengagement she rails against.

Giving Ann Coulter airtime is like giving a Klansman airtime. Having Ann Coulter as a guest on your show speaks to your qualities as a human being and how you want to be perceived by the world.
She makes fun of dead children and 9/11 widows. Chris Matthews should apologize for even booking her — just like the comedy club owner apologized after the Michael Richards outburst.
Having said all of that, think it *is* newsworthy that she is paid to speak at a Republican events. That tells me where they stand as a party.
Posted by: Kevo | June 28, 2007, 4:16 am 4:16 am
If Ann Coulter had responded to Elizabeth Edwards in a professional manner, it might have been an interesting debate. Instead, Coulter was smug and condescending. Asking why Edwards’ husband hadn’t been the one to call and saying that Mrs. Edwards was telling her to stop writing (which she wasn’t — she just wanted the personal attacks to stop) indicate that Coulter wasn’t interested in dialogue, she just wanted to cement her self-styled image as a celebrity. That’s not journalism. Political commentary and debate should be on the issues, not on nasty, self-serving cracks about the candidates.

The best way to deal with the Ann Coulters and the Paris Hiltons of the world is to IGNORE THEM…They are just flip sides of the same coin:
Coulter is a vituperous, vicious long-haired skinny blond with nothing of real substance to say, and…
Paris Hilton is a vapid, vacuuous long-haired skinny blond with nothing of real substance to say.
SO WHY IS THE “NEWS” MEDIA SO GULLIBLE AS TO GIVE THEM SO MUCH AIR TIME??? I resent it, not just for the time it wastes and the stomach churning it brings on at the time of the broadcast, but the fact that it makes it necessary for me to take time after the fact to tell you, and other outlets, what should be obvious to you.
I have always been a Good Morning America viewer…I love Diane Sawyer, and Robin, Chris, and Sam, et al are people I enjoy sharing my morning with. However, I get the feeling that your producers must be twenty-somethings, given the musical guests you book for your concert series, etc…Do you really think that high-school aged kids, or even twenty-somethings, are watching even quasi-news shows at 8:30 in the morning???…NOT!!!…You might do better with musicians/groups that we Boomers grew up with (and I don’t mean Barry Manilow)…As it is now, I generally turn you off during the last half hour, unless your giving consumer tips.
Just thought you’d like to know.

Chris Matthews gave airtime to Coulter, improving his own ratings. Coulter needs anger management classes, something is definately loose upstairs. Get help girl, there is still hope for you with the proper medication. I think shaking those long locks excessively has rattled your limited brain cells. Mrs. Edwards has exhibited, once again, what a classy lady she is by confronting this nut case Coulter and maintaining her dignity while doing so.

Wow! A democrat demeans a republican and it’s entertainment (see “Bill Maher”), but if a republican demeans a democrat…STOP THE PRESSES! WE HAVE A VILE CREATURE HERE WHO IS PREVENTING ANY MEANINGFUL POLICITAL DISCOURSE!!!! Please. Let’s face it. Present day politics is not much more than another form of show business. And like other entertainers, pols are going to be jabbed, insulted and otherwise verbally abused. It’s the reality of our time. The only true misdeed here is that neither side will draw attention to the name-callers in their own camp; as if they don’t exist. And sadly, this week, that includes the left-leaning GMA. How about a little balanced reporting there, guys. You’re sure making it sound like there’s no republican bashing going on out there. (We know better.)

Saw Elizabeth Edwards interviewed this morning. She compared her request to stop the personal attacks to the approach in the South to politely insist that people not engage in bigotted racial speech. It took many years in the South to make such comments unacceptable in polite conversation by Southern whites. Maybe she’s on to something with her polite, but very public request to Colter, in an attempt to change the tenor of political debate.

Ann Coulter has a right to air her opinions, I agree.
Ann Coulter is also a vile, hateful idiot. She proves it every time she opens her mouth. The more idiots talk, the more they show just how idiotic and ridiculous they are. What kind of person would take Ann Coulter seriously these days? Who would think that she’s a “good American” or an “intelligent person?” Why would anyone give creedance or validity to one word that she says?
There was a classic line in Star Wars where Han Solo called Ben Kenobi a fool. Kenobi wisely asked, “Who’s the bigger fool, the fool or the fool who follows him?”
We can easily ask the same thing about those who follow Ann Coulter.

I can’t help wondering if Ms. Edwards will also place a call to Bill Moyers for his comments i.e., he wishes Dick Cheney had been killed by terrorists or any of the other liberal pundants who have free reign and can say any hateful thing they want as long as it denegrates conservatives, Christians, etc. Will she place a call to Rosie O’Donnell, surely nobody is more hateful than that women. I’m waiting to hear those calls from Ms. Edwards.

The news organizations need to step up and “do the right thing.” Stop giving the Ann Coulters of the world a forum. Stop the hate filled speech, and promote debate on issues and ideas. Healthy debate is necessary, but hate filled speech is devisive, and will lead to horrible actions, I believe. The networks need to lead the way, and place intelligent, educated, articulate, and calm people on the air.

I completely agree with Mrs. Edwards. The focal point of the election should be the issues concerning our future and not the irrelevant topics Ann uses to draw attention to herself. It is obvious that Ann is doing things to promote her book. I commend Elizabeth Edwards for stepping up to defend her family and make a difference.

How does Ann Coulter justify being a working adult in America? She lives off denigrating others in order to get attention focused on herself. Is this any way to make a living? To me, this is a parasite.

I will defend the First Admendment to my grave, but I do not think our forefathers had hate mongering in mind. Coulter is an embarassment to the female gender, and anyone who buys into her crap lowers themselves to her level, which is very, very low. No class, no tack, no integrity. Although I am sure by the arrogance Coulter reflects she believes otherwise.

First of all, shame on you ABC and Chris Matthews. I certainly HOPE Ann Coulter had advance warning as did Mrs. Edwards….but I think is a safe assumption that she did not. I understand and agree with Mrs. Edwards in that the “tenor of the dialogue” going on in this country should be changed. However, until she calls, visits or discusses this issue with the Rosie O’Donnell’s, Michael Moore’s, Nancy Pelosi’s, and Bill Moyer’s, it if completely unfair to put the sole responsibility of this change on Ann Coulter. The Left is the group who started this abrasive and negative type of dialogue and now the Right is taking all the flack for defending itself. To make a change….start with the source!

I think Ann Coulter has a point.
How can Bill Maher (his comments about VP Cheney), Rosie O’Donnell (her comments about our troops), etc. say whatever they want but no one can voice their opinion on these comments made from the far-left?
Do I think Ann Coulter becomes very easily heated about her position, of course…
Do I think that this was a political move for Elizabeth Edwards to call in and “whine” on-air for Ann to be “nice”, of course…
The only people that truly complain are the left and they have an open forum in the media to voice whatever they may like, especially when degrading our commander in chief, President Bush. The right under most conditions mind their business. But when they do voice their position as Ann does, people take what she says completely out of context.

Both ABC and MSNBC should be ashamed of themselves for giving Ann Coulter free air time so she can spout her hateful commentary. After listening to last night’s (June 27) World News Tonight, and this morning’s (June 28) GMA interview with Elizabeth Edwards, I have decided that I have watched ABC News programming for the last time.
Media Matters’ contributor Eric Boehlert pegged ABC well in “Lapdogs” – they’re nothing but a shameless shill for the GOP and the Bush Administration. I’m not particularly fond of NBC, either. I will get my national and world news from the best program on the air: PBS’ “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer”. Conventional news sources have proven time and again that they’re crap.

Ann Coulter is many things (vile, reptilian, rich) but stupid isn’t one of them. Nor is she an intellectual. Mostly she is an opportunist. I don’t believe that she believes much of what she says. But she saw an opportunity to become a conservative pundit and leapt with both feet. Now she says the most outrageous things she can come up with, protected only by the fact that the people she’s slandering are public entities and can’t sue her.
But the people in this thread who say she speaks “the truth” or what ‘real’ Americans truly feel should feel ashamed. Coulter has advocated murder, racism, and environmental disaster, spoken out against women’s rights and the same first amendment she now appears to be clinging to. Coulter may claim this is “satire” but that’s only because she either doesn’t understand or is deliberately misusing that word. (That, or hers is the greatest put-on act of all time, and Borat could take lessons from her.)
If this is the woman you revere, maybe you need to take a closer look – at her, and at yourselves.

Turn off the T.V. Its so simple. I don’t understand how any Christians can approve of that Ann Coulter’s methods. I shudder everytime she says something that sounds even vaguely like she’s trying to defend Christians. I don’t need her defending me. As a Christian, I pray that everyone will try to show love and kindness to others even in their work, jokes, and politics.

It was with a great deal of interest that I read the many comments concerning the ann coulter/ELIZABETH EDWARDS exchange,(please note my deliberate usage of the lower case in refereence to ms coulter)
ONe of the many freedoms we as Americans enjoy is the freedom to express an opinion in public. However, this right and privilege is tempered by the fact that one deos not have the privilege to defame another or to infringe upon the right of any other AMerican. I missed the original broadcast, so I was obligated to view the video on the net to be able to hear the entire text of the conversation.
If ann coulter flipped her hair once, she flipped it several times, looking and acting as the self-absorbed,aging Prom Queen hiding behind her dark, menacing shades. I have seen ms coulter on Bill Maher’s show and she has never been able to hold a candle to Bill’s presentation of the facts. He regularly shuts her down, when she can’t think of a comeback. She has stated in the past that she and Bill are friends. If that is truly the case, then Bill needs a better class of friend. She tried to excuse her deplorable comments concerning the Edward family by lamely whining that Bill had made a similar remark about”Slick Dick”Cheney. When Bill Maher made that remark it was in the context of a comedy routine presented in the monologue of his show “Real Time”. ann coulter’s vitriolic attack was not part of any”joke”, but rather an unwarranted attack on a family who has had more than it’s share of grief and adversity. Was annie fanny proud of herself? She got quite a kick out of patting herself on the back in public. Even the Re-pubs were astounded by her outlandish, mean and tasteless comments. What I admire is a woman who will stand up and defend her family: her childern and the man she loves and do so in a polite and noble way. Elizabeh stated that she did not tell her husband she was going to call, she just did it,unbeknownst to John. So all you good ole boys can get off your testosterone-driven logic that John is “hiding behind his wife”. I would have done the same thing Elizabeth Edwards did if someone ever denigrated any of my children or attacked the man I love.I wouldn’t wait for anybody’s permission to grind a loathsome worm like ann coulterback into the slime from whence she crawled. Next time Elizabeth, don;t bother trying to communicate with a sub-specie, your wasting your valuable time that would be better spent helping your children and spending quality time with the people who are meaningful in your life
Posted by: Jerri | June 29, 2007, 3:02 am 3:02 am
Boy oh Boy, the fact that John Edwards has to have his wife speak on his behalf says it all. Come on, everyone knows ABC set this all up to have Elizabeth Edwards call into Good Morning America just to boost her husband’s standings. Did it work? Come on, the answer is NO! Nothing can help the Brett girl at this point. Politics aren’t like they were when Richard Nixon ran for office whereby a candidate that lost could come back and eventually one. If a candidate loses he or she is out of contention because we want somebody new. It’s simple, John Edwards is in 3rd place and he needs to increase the fundraising. He tells Elizabeth to call in and complain that a political comedian is saying things about her husband that she doesn’t like. Ann Coulter whether she is Republican or not was simply quoting Bill Mahr when she made her comment. Elizabeth has to get “real” and understand that she needs to get a stiffer upper lip if she is going to be the wife of a political figure.

You know the old saying, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good people do nothing?” Maybe you know it by “All it takes for evil to prosper is for good people to do nothing?”
Elizabeth Edwards is a good person, and she did something. She didn’t let an evil triumph or prosper.

Making light of the death of someone’s son is beyond the pale, but what is calling someone a “f*ggot” while wearing the same, “here I am, call me” black, short-skirt time after time and later saying, “I just wish (John Edwards had) been killed in a terrorist assasination.”
The only time anyone should listen to anything Ann Coulter has to say is when she says it wearing something other than the same short black skirt. Really. The Republicans need to have a “fashion” raiser for her.

What is Anne Coulter’s deal. She has no content whatsoever so she insults those who disagree with her. If she had substains, wouldn’t she offer suggestion to remedy these problems that she attacks the left for. Wouldn’t she be pulling her credibility out of the gutter if she could carry herself in a way more respectible such as that of George Will or William Buckley? Maybe then she would still be with MSNBC or USA Today.
Perhaps she is just still bitter about the house falling on her sister during that tornado.
As for Elizabeth Edwards, from one Tarheel to another, You Rock like Gibraltar. Keep on doing what your doing and let’s put John in the West Wing where he should have been in some time ago.
