Kids Say The Darndest Things

ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson and Eloise Harper Report: The Edwards campaign was forced to respond Thursday to reports that young Emma Claire Edwards, age 9, picked her father’s Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., over pop Edwards when asked which of the presidential contenders she likes best.

Last Saturday, the Edwards family was campaigning in Iowa when Mrs. Edwards asked her daughter the seemingly safe question.  But, showing signs of rebellion, Miss Edwards picked the former first lady not the 2004 Democratic vice presidential contender.  And her pick came only day before Father’s Day — ouch!

Elizabeth Edwards responded on her blog writing Thursday, "It was Emma Claire, who pointed to a Hillary pin slyly and then, smiling pointed to her father. A nine-year sense of humor — you would have thought Matt Drudge would have been able to pick up on that."

The Drudge Report popularized the story, linking to a dispatch printed in the West Branch Times, a publication according to its website, that "has been in continuous publication since 1875 — a year after the birth of our community’s most famous son, President Herbert Hoover."

The Clinton campaign — who has actively sought the support of young women in her historic bid — did not provide comment on the story.

This isn’t the first child of a parent in the 2008 race to shun a White House wannabe parent.

In an interview with the New York Times, former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani’s son Andrew, 21, admitted to problems and said he would not participate in his father’s campaign.
