Pentagon Hires New Spokesman

ABC News’ Luis Martinez Reports: In an effort to boost its public image, the Pentagon has hired former ABC News correspondent Geoff Morrell, 38, to become the civilian face of the Pentagon.

Morrell will function as the Pentagon’s press secretary and Defense Secretary Robert Gates’ personal spokesman.

A civilian face at Pentagon briefings hasn’t existed since the departure last year of Larry DiRita, former Assistant Defense Secretary for Public Affairs.

In addition to his administrative duties, DiRita would regularly brief  reporters from the Pentagon podium.  He would hold regular briefings on his own or was accompanied by a top military official.

DiRita’s successor Dorrance Smith has maintained a low profile and not assumed the visible role as Pentagon briefer.  The effect has been that Pentagon briefings have usually been held by top military officials with no civilian accompaniment.   Morrell will now fill the public civilian void left since DiRita’s departure.

According to Politico.com which first broke the news, Gates wanted to hire a journalist as a spokesperson in an effort to improve press relations at a time when there is pressure on the Department to show improvement in Iraq.

Bring in Geoff Morrell to jockey a public relations postion for the surge status in September. Imagine a Civil War backdrop of atrocious proportions with a PR man. Surreal!
