Reid All About It

After my failed attempt yesterday to get Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to answer the question as to whether the Iraqi people will be safer if US combat troops withdrawal, Reid’s office formally expressed its displeasure with my questions and my piece.

You can watch video of our whole exchange HERE, or read the transcript HERE, or see a brief excerpt from our World News with Charles Gibson spot last night HERE … (Sorry I can’t show you the whole spot, ABCNews.com hasn’t put that video up on the site.)

What do you think? Was I out of line? Was he ducking the question?

Conservative media seem to think it was a fair question, as evidenced by the fact that link was on a conservative website, not to mention this Washington Times editorial (LINK)…

Meanwhile the question goes unanswered: will the Iraqis be safer without US troops there?

And what do Iraqis think? CNN recently had an interesting piece on that subject which you can watch HERE

During my brief time in our Baghdad bureau last year, I would often talk about this with out cameraman Alaa Uldeen Aziz. He was very distressed about how his country was descending into chaos. But he also thought the US had an obligation to help restore security.

As you may recall, Aziz was killed (LINK) earlier this year. He was a good man.

In other news….

Why are the British being blamed for "man-eating badgers" in Basra? (LINK)…

The so-called "DC Madam" placed calls to then-Rep. David Vitter during House votes (LINK)…

Jake, it’s a good question, but one that should have been asked six years ago. We may have broken it, therefore bought it, but at what price to the average American.? The monetary cost of this occupation is not sustainable, and in the mean while, we can barely keep track of issues within our own house. We’ve abandoned countries before – Vietnam comes to mind, and although things were rough there for a while, things eventually smoothed out, and now we can go on vacation there. We’ve caused enough death and chaos there, and we’ll be paying the bill for a long time to come.

You asked a fair question, one that Senator Reid obviously doesn’t want to answer. I’m glad to see that the MSM is at last speaking “truth to power.”

I’d answer the questions you pose in your third paragraph this way: “It was more of the same dodge-the-question routine that we’ve seen so often from our elected officials.” “No, not in the slightest.” “Most certainly.” I saw your piece on WN ysterday evening and was appalled at the treatment you received from Sen. Reid, especially his comment that he wasn’t in a debate. I only wish that I were a resident of Nevada so I could have the extreme pleasure of voting against him in the next election!

I do not think you can debate Sen. Reid, he has no moral compass. He and his counter part Pelosi are devoid of common sense. To them, it’s not what’s right or wrong only what politically correct.

Jake – Keep up the honest Journalism – There are so few of you left. Ask both sides the question.
See Reid knows the answer but it goes against him politically. It more important for him to attack our troops.

Democrat Harry Reid knows he is posturing for votes and he desperately wants us to lose in Iraq. Just when I had given up hope that a lib media outlet would actually face the Democrats on something so insanely flagrant, you come along. Stay with Reid, make him talk, NEXT – also have a vist with that scandalous and bilions richer Dem Sen. Diane Feinstein about the military contracts she awarded her husband as the Chairman of MILCOM.

I still say the more accurate and pointed question is: Are the Iraqi people more safe with American troops in their country? Evidence indicates they are not and are dying by the scores daily.

Better luck on your next job.
I haven’t watched network TV news since 1976. It’s nice to learn that maybe there is someone out there from the mold of Lawrence Spivak.

I hate to say this but the situation in Iraq is alot like Viet Nam. We heard the same predictions, that if we were to leave Viet Nam millions would die. We left. Millions died. America turned a blind eye to the carnage that followed. And, like the Japanese after WWII, America still fails to acknowledge its culpability in the death of these people.
Why should this be any different. Why should the deaths of countless Iraqis concern a godless liberal America.

Isn’t the real question why have those responsible for America invading Iraq not been held accountable?

Posted by: Tom | July 13, 2007, 1:57 pm 1:57 pm

I think it is absolutely deplorable that men like him have held countless oversight hearings now issuing subpoenas like parking tickets demanding answers and yet when the interrogation lights are turned on his face on record…oh no…not unless we have the questions ahead of time and only if it politically doesn’t hurt him by answering…Snakes in the grass…money and power that is all our elected officials on both sides of the isle represent in this day and age.

The Iraqis have had ample opportunity to step up to the plate and show they are capable of governing themselves. They have repeatedly demonstrated they aren’t interested in doing much more than kill each other.
The US does not need to keep the peace while they kill each other. That was never our intent, and should not be our intent now.
If the Iraqis want to govern themselves, then they need to take decisive steps to take control now, and let the US pull out.

Jake, you were not even close to being out of line.
Mr. Reid did duck your question, and thereby answered it.
The Iraqi society suffered under Saddam for decades, and under UN sanctions for about a decade. This severely warped and damaged their societal structures, hence, they need more recovery time, more time with the “training wheels”.

I’m very proud of our Democratic representatives that, unlike the shirkers of the GOP, are exercising oversight and asking questions of this incompetent administration that should have been asked and answered years ago. This incompetent, indadequate, criminally negligent administration lied the nation into a Blunder in Iraq; failed to pursue and capture bin Laden; has permitted Al Qaeda to reconstitute and rebuild strength; ill-prosecuted war on terror. And all those whitewashes called investigatiosn by the GOP controlled congress!! It’s about damn time Congress led by the Democrats exercised and performed its duty of oversight.

Sentaor Reid didn’t duck your question; you just didn’t like his answer. Are we there to fight terror or make the Iragis feel better?
And why are you all-of-a-sudden chosing to go so hard after Majority Leader Reid but not the man in charge of this long failed war, President Bush?
I never thought you were a hack, until now.
Misplaced aggression = bad “journalism”.
Thanks for poisoning the discourse.

Jake,
Good job carrying the water for us.
Your next check is on the way.

Good Job. This is the kind of honest questioning of politicians I have been waiting to hear.
I first heard your exchange with Senator Reid on Dennis Prager’s radio show and then heard your interview with Hugh Hewitt. I will definitely be following your work in the future.
Keep up the good work.

best question by an MSMer i have seen in years…if you keep it up those on the right might believe MSMers at some point…good work

Your question had three possible answers: “Yes,” “no,” or “I don’t know.” Sen. Reid chose to talk instead about Iraqi public opinion. His response might have been a reason for answering “yes,” but his testiness when you repeated the question tells me that he truly didn’t want to say “Yes, Iraqis will be safer without US troops in Iraq.”

The question has been answered a million times before: We are already in a Blood Bath!

Can someone remind me why this bozo Harry Reid is in charge of anything? And check out Schumer behind him, grinning and shaking his head like a bumbling fool.
My God – why did we vote last November to put the Dems in charge? Six months, and all they have done is investigate. We did not send them there to investigate – we sent them there to accomplish things.
I want my vote back. I cannot wait until 2008, when I vote either Independent or Republican. I am fed up already with Dems in control.

James Marsden – unfortunately the Republicans had to be cleaned out because they were acting like libs, 2008 will be the rejuvenating of the Republicans to their core values

You did the job you were supposed to do. I’m tired of politicians… republicans, democrats, whatever… not being willing to answer a simple question directly. You were not out of line at all, and the fact that Reid didn’t want to directly answer your question, even with a “I don’t know”, reflects badly on him.
You should moderate one of the presidential debates and try to get the candidates to answer questions. :)

Well done Jake! It was a very fair question, one that should be debated and intelligently discussed. No politician should support withdrawal without answering that question publicly. This is a tough, tough, situation, one that has been rife with bad or at least unsuccessful decisions. If we go forward without an intelligent debate about the consequences of our actions, then it will seem to the American public as thought the politicians are moving forward in a cynical attempt to keep themselves in power, not to do what it right. Keep pushing on getting answers Jake!

Jake:
Two things. First, very good question to Senator Reid. Of course he was ducking the question. He knows perfectly well that, if we withdraw, the Iraqi people are likely to suffer a great deal. He does not care, because his concern is with sticking it to Bush so he the Dems can win next year.
Second, excuse me, but your question should have been standard journalism. It is an obvious question. But no one has asked it before. No one speaks to Pelosi that way. Why did your question stand out so dramatically, if the media really is bulldoging both sides equally? You are a smart and capable guy. Do you really believe that the mainstream media even tries to be objective? Let me give an example. Did anyone in the mainstream ever run an investigative story looking into the question, did the New York Times and the LA Times compromise any actual US anti-terror activities by running their stories, detailing how the US monitors money flows? Again, it is an obvious question. Two media outlets — which strongly and obviously oppose the war — print a story which reveals operational details of US actions. Did this hurt actual US policy, or not? Don’t hold your breath until anyone in the mainstream media looks into that question!!!

Posted by: Rick Gibson | July 15, 2007, 7:07 pm 7:07 pm

The problem with your question is that it fishing for a “soundbite” answer that can fit in the twenty-two minutes of a “World News” broadcast. I don’t think the question can be simply answered. The administration certainly didn’t get the results from their “soundbite” pronouncements when they got us into this mess, nor did the mainstream media ask the tough questions then, instead preferring to parrot such pap as “we’ll be greeted as liberators” and “the war will pay for itself.”
