T. Thompson Plans Iowa Barnstorm

ABC News’ Z. Byron Wolf reports: There are no millions of fundraising dollars for former Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t see a silver lining in raising less than half a million dollars in the second quarter this year. That’s an improvement for him. Thompson raised $328,000 in the first quarter this year and $473,126 in the just-ended second quarter.

While many of the top-tier candidates, with their multi-million dollar, multi-state, multi-media strategies are skipping Iowa altogether, Thompson has pinned his campaign to the early caucus state, visiting every week this year and pledging to campaign in all 99 counties by the time the Iowa GOP’s Straw Poll comes around on August 11th — an event he has called a must-win for his candidacy.

To that end, this summer in Iowa is the moment of truth and Thompson announced that he plans to barnstorm the state. On July 6th, he will embark from an event at the Prairie Moon Winery in Ames on a month-long, whirlwind, 100 stop bus tour that will end back where it started just before the straw poll.

$475,000 is only a mere fraction of what Ron Paul will be reporting soon. After the second GOP debate, Paul took in $100,000 the very next day. His Iowa rally on Saturday drew twice as many people as an earlier candidates forum that excluded him. If Iowa is a “must win” for Thompson, he’ll be gone by the end of the summer, with McCain not far behind.

And at the end of the day, this odd-looking bird will average 10 votes per county! LOSER! He may have captured the John Anderson vote!
