Bush: America on offense in War on Terror

ABC News’ Jennifer Duck reports: During this week’s Presidential radio address, President Bush highlighted "encouraging news from both Afghanistan and Iraq" saying, "In America, August is considered a slow news month.  But in the war on terror, America and our allies remain on the offense against our enemies."

Bush also spoke of his meeting with Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai at Camp David this past week. The President said that Karzai had assured him that the country’s tribal leaders are committed to defeating the Taliban and expanding democracy in Afghanistan.

Bush said, "[Karzai] is confident that his government will prevail against the Taliban remnants who continue to launch attacks throughout his country," and that the Taliban "cannot stop the march of democracy in Afghanistan."

The President highlighted the success of the recent round of U.S. air strikes that killed Haitham al-Badri, who masterminded the February 2006 bombing of the Golden Mosque in Samarra. "Al-Badri was the most notorious al Qaeda commander in Samarra," Bush said. "His death is a victory for a free Iraq, and a sign that America and the Iraqi government will not surrender the future of Iraq to cold-blooded killers."

The President ended his radio address by trying to marshal support for the troop surge in Iraq, praising the military for "carrying out their mission with skill and honor" and "accomplishing great things for the future of our Nation and for the future of a free Iraq."
