ABC News’ Tahman Bradley Reports: Even though he won’t be investing resources in this weekend’s Republican Party Ames Straw Poll, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson is showing he intends to be a force in the nation’s first ’08 caucus state with a trip to Iowa Friday, August 17, reports Tom Beaumont of the Des Moines Register.

Thompson is expected to travel to Des Moines for meetings with state legislators, the president of the Iowa Christian Alliance and politically active evangelical Christians, reports Beaumont.

The former Tennessee senator turned "Law and Order" star is still operating under a testing-the-waters committee and is not expected to formally enter the race until sometime after Labor Day.

National polls show Thompson in third or fourth place when matched against the rest of the Republican presidential field.
