Romney Attacks “Sanctuary Cities”
ABC News’ Matt Stuart reports: Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney today released a new radio ad targeting so-called "sanctuary cities."
"That’s the problem with cities like Newark, San Francisco and New York City that adopt sanctuary policies," the ad claims, "Sanctuary cities become magnets that encourage illegal immigration and undermine secure borders."
Romney’s ad debuts after federal officials announced that two men suspected of killing three people in a Newark schoolyard were in the United States illegally.
The ad, which is airing in Iowa and New Hampshire, is merely the latest step in the debate between Romney and fellow Presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani that began two weeks ago. Romney accused New York City of being the "poster child for sanctuary cities" under Giuliani. Giuliani fired back, arguing crime rates dropped dramatically during his time as Mayor. The ensuing debate has led to suggestions that immigration could drive a wedge issue in the Republican party.

Mayors and City Councils that issue so-called “Sanctuary City” orders and decrees to protect illegal aliens are creating anarchy and should be criminally charged with aiding and abetting crimials. In the case of Newark, New Jersey – that City Council and Mayor should be charged with criminal conspiracy that enabled the Triple Murder of those college students by the Illegal Alien. This happens all too often and it is because these rogue Mayors are illegally issuing so-called “Sanctuary City” decrees that encourage and demand that the cities harbor and support illegal alien criminals. ENOUGH!

Giuliani is for Amnesty. He said so again the other day on Fox. Romney is against Amnesty. He specifically says so in this new ad. So now I feel a lot better about Romney.
Amnesty killed McCain’s campaign and it will kill Giuliani’s too.
I now think Romney will beat Giuliani, largely based on the Amnesty issue.

Perhaps Romney has the backbone we need in a president. One that will not cater to illegals! We all know it is lacking in the present occupant of the WH.

WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! The “immigration issue” is only blue smoke and mirrors for our real issues. Yea, just another way of trying to get fear in the public to control the vote and forget about the economy, the war in Iraq, our decaying infrastructure, our lower test scores, our decreasing health, our lack of alternate energy sources…. Yea, let’s blame an immigrant and then let’s spin it by saying it’s the liberals fault. But will this election rhetoric work?? Well, it has before. Can you say President Bush??? Best example of what preaching fear does for ya. And let’s do it again.
Posted by: Roy | August 21, 2007, 1:37 pm 1:37 pm
Romney preaching fear just lowered his creditability a few points with me. I’m not gonna let any politician do that to me and I think the rest of us ought to also so we can get them to start talking REAL issues.
Posted by: Roy | August 21, 2007, 1:41 pm 1:41 pm
This is just like the Roe vs Wade crap. The repulicans used that to get elected. Then after they got control of the Whitehouse, the Congress and the Supreme Court, they didn’t do anything about it. WHY??? Because than the issue would go away and they wouldn’t have anything to run on.
Now the effectiveness of abortion has slowly disappeared.
Now they’re getting on the immigration wagon so as to replace the abortion issue. They won’t solve the problem here either because than the problem which they think will get them elected will go away and the reason to vote for ‘em will disappear.
So let’s really screw ‘em up and vote on important issues that really mater. Then we might get some real relevant dialog going.

Who cares if Romney is a Mormon. I don’t care if he worships rocks or trees. There’s other issues at stake here.

Hillary Clinton is not from New York! She was born in Chicago in 1947 and spent the majority of her adult working life in Arkansas. I think this makes her a “carpetbagger!”
Posted by: Nick | August 21, 2007, 1:58 pm 1:58 pm
Don’t think Hillary fits the description. But good try anyway……. Carpetbaggers were Northerners who moved to the South during Reconstruction between 1865 and 1877. They formed a coalition with Freedmen (freed slaves), and Scalawags (Southern whites) in the Republican Party, which in turn controlled ex-Confederate states for varying periods, 1867–1877.

As for the cutting of federal funding to sanctuary cities that harbor illegals that broke our laws, I’m all for it. Why should the taxpayer shoulder the costs of thses people coming here. To those of you who deride the American citizen who is unfortunately poor and “obviously” the cause of all of our crime, shame on you. What has Mexico done for the world save give us the taco and burrito. It is high time that corrupt government provide and decent standard of living and opportunities as found here in the US. Accepting their poor unconditionally only condones what they do, export their poor who send billions back into their economy and furtheraggravates the problem. Those of you who support their poor coming here illegally only further the vicious cycle of poverty, corruption, and exploitation. Our economy will not collapse without them here. You can’t pay slave wages, have them live 9-10 in a house for 4-5, and say you are for their rights. I think it’s only so yoy can continue to live your own lifestyle, and probably outside of your means….. I’m all for legal immigration. If sanctuary cities and their citizens want to pay for the illegals to be their, let them pay it themselves. I want my contribution to taxes to go to hardworking, unfortunate, and/or honest law-abiding Americans!

You can’t blame Mayor Booker for something that has been going on for years and years. This was going on before the young man was even born. I am truely sadden by the shootings of the four young college students, only later to loose three of them to violence. But as the parent who came close to loosing both of his children, said, the communities also has to take some responsability for where you live. Schools that have these cameras on the premises should make sure that the equipment is working, if not then the Borad of Education should be held partly responsible. If the cameras were not working at night then the cameras wern’t working while you children were in school for the summer programs. For those who wish to live and work in the United States, must have all proper papers before entering. Booker just took office, you can’t exspect the man to clearn up years of mess.

Why doesn’t Mitt attack Sen. Hatch for wanting to let the children of illegal aliens attend college for the same amount as residents? Hatch is LDS from Utah? Doesn’t having access to resident college fees promote illegal aliens staying here? Who pays? Mitt appears to have a double standard. Why does Mitt treat a senator from Utah different than a mayor of New York. I can’t say it’s a shared link to Mormon hierarchy. I can understand not wanted to waste a vote on a candidate that will give special preference based on belonging to the same church.

If it makes you feel any better, maybe consider her a “Progressive Carpetbagger!” Either way she’s not a New Yorker and she is incapabale of leading this country. Look what’s done (or not done and maybe that’s a good thing) as a New York Senator. All I see is pandering to votes and comparing herself to Harriet Tubman. She won’t answer any hypothetical questions in these circus act Democrat debates. Life is not full of guarantees and the people deserve the right to know and the truth about what she would do in a given situation or scenario. Chicken! What a leader she’d make, sheesh. I agree with Mr. Sanchez, but am curious what solutions the pro-immigration people suggest regarding healthcare, education, and taxes. If amnesty is granted, are they suddenly going to be paying taxes? Are they going to be paying for their healthcare bill and for their children to go to school? Where are the solutions if these 12 million illegals are granted amnesty? If they become ‘legal’ all of a sudden, I don’t think they are going to like it as much as they think they will. It costs alot to live here legally!!

This country is one that has laws. It is free because of those laws. I know that some dense people don’t understand how laws equate with freedom. To bad for them. They’re just stupid. When the rule of law is ignored, anarchy is just around the corner. Don’t forget that immigrants have admired this country because of the rule of law. So, find the illegals and send them home. There can be no amnesty. Amnesty rewards illegal behavior. If immigrants what to enter this country, fine! They should do it legally. Immigrants can learn the law of the land, as all our ancestors did. They can PAY TAXES to support the social services they’ve come to expect. This is not a racial issue. It is a legal, ethical and, therefore, moral issue. If you don’t like the existing law, then change it. But the law must be followed. It is the only thing that separates us from anarchy and chaos.

All the talk about illegals being the cause of the high crime rate is being answered in typical beaurocratic nonsense. Some official idiot said that the matter was moot because the rate of crime occurance was about equal between legal residents and illegals. Huh? Well so what?!! If the illegals were not there, then it follows that the crime rate would be half!!???

Over the weekend I had a conversation with several extended family members regarding their increasingly-frequent encounters with illegal aliens who do not speak English. Our country is litterally being invaded, and no one in Washington seems to care–especially those on the left side of the aisle, and those whose last names start with McCain an Guiliani.
Mitt Romney will seal the boarder, enforce current law which makes it illegal to hire an undocumented worker, and then the problem will take care of itself. No other candidate is speaking the complete truth on this issue.
Posted by: Ron Richey | August 21, 2007, 7:36 pm 7:36 pm
The math is interesting. If the crime rate is equal for the two cultures and the population ratio is about 25 to 1, then each illegal is 25 times more likely to committ a crime than the current population.

Good observation Norm. Those are facts many people (Like Bush, Chertoff, Gonzalez and most Dems) love to ignore.
From usillegalaliens.com – To give you an idea of “how much crime,” as noted in Illegal Alien Crime Wave in Full Swing, in April 2005, the GAO released a report on a study of 55,322 illegal aliens incarcerated in federal, state, and local facilities during 2003. It found the following:
Of the 55,322 illegal aliens studied, researchers found that they were arrested a total of 459,614 times, averaging about 8 arrests per illegal alien.
They were arrested for a total of about 700,000 criminal offenses, averaging about 13 offenses per illegal alien.
49% had previously been convicted of a felony, 20% of a drug offense; 18% a violent offense, and 11%, other felony offenses.
81% of the arrests occurred after 1990
56% of those charged with a reentry offense had previously been convicted on at least 5 prior occasions.
Defendants charged with unlawful reentry had the most extensive criminal histories. 90% had been previously arrested. Of those with a prior arrest, 50% had been arrested for violent or drug-related felonies.
Note the last two points – they mean the perpetrators were “previously deported.” Regardless, ALL those crimes would have never happened, i.e. were preventable, with serious deportation of the illegal aliens already here and proper border security to prevent both entry and re-entry.
In reviewing those numbers, note that the study only sampled about 21% of the incarcerated illegal aliens. To get the full extent of the collateral damage, we need to extrapolate the average number of offenses out across all 267,000 incarcerated illegal alien criminals. Doing so results in some 1,288,619 crimes!
Don’t the MSM and illegal alien supporters continually tell us that illegal immigration is a “victimless crime” and that they are only here to do the work Americans don’t want to do? Since each crime has a victim, 1,288,619 sounds like a lot of victimization to me. Maybe they are also referring to doing the “work” that American criminals don’t want to do. Also keep in mind that the 1,288,619 crimes are only the ones committed by the hard core illegal alien criminals that were finally caught and incarcerated. The ones not caught and the new criminals crossing daily are committing more crime each and every day.

Personally I support a path to legalization or citizenship (not necessarily the path that Bush laid out, but a path). It seems impossibly expensive (and maybe even impossible) to ship all illegal immigrants back to where they came from. We need to secure the borders to stop more immigration, but also figure out a way for some of the illegal immigrants to become legal residents. I would support the DREAM Act (legalization for immigrants who came to this country as minors).

Salt Lake City, UT is a Mormon town & a welcoming city for illegals. Check it out. Mitt is a Mormon.
Of course, Guiliani, Clinton loves illegals and caters to them. If you vote for them, they will sell America to the illegal aliens especially Clinton. Getting big support from the Indians (India). What an idiot.
Posted by: marc | August 21, 2007, 10:14 pm 10:14 pm
It will take 4 to 10 years to change the existing laws that are on the books now as it relates to illegal immigration. Of course, Amnesty is the “easiest” road to travel, but not the wisest road.
Human nature always takes the “easiest” road possible. To secure for ourselves – our children and our grandchildren – the economical foundation that made America great, we must not let the tax consumers outnumber the tax payers. Fellow citizens, we are now at those crossroads.
If we, collectively, are going to let these illegal aliens break our laws, then HELL, lets all break them. Lets all say “each for his own”. If there is no punishment for breaking a law, you are right, then you have anarchy. If “they” can break the law, why can’t I. I am really sick and tired of pandering to the lawbreakers. Its time that “someone” stand up and DEPORT ALL OF THEM. (no matter what country they come from)
I am from New Mexico, where this is a big problem. My father was born and raised in Mexico. We are totally disgusted and fed-up with our government not protecting our borders. President Bush is a coward.
My vote is for Mitt Romney. The only one with guts. The only one who will stand up to the heat. The only one with character and principle.

My hearts go to the family, but it’s wrong for New Jersey blames all the immigrants on this one and now in control off congress on this one crime by 1-2 immigrants who did this but now all immigrant are to blame for NJ, because they where Latin now 1 crime is blame on just one culture. New Jersey crimes has been a problem, based on Americans killing Americans black or white also commit most those crimes, but now since the killing was none American the laws are going to blame all immigrants on this one crime, so let me ask it’s ok for Americans to kill Americans in NJ. Or is the case because that the culture who did it makes a difference to the community. And now NJ can lead congress and control the white house and control the democrat and republicans on this one? Because they were immigrants who did this crime makes a difference in our society come on American oh I forgot most Americans hate and are raised to hate on illegal immigrants, is this one in the bible who can ruler and hate others? Is it in the bible to pick on one culture is this called Christian teaching in our society in America. NJ have many crimes not based on immigrants in the past, but on American killing Americans just like ever day in Michigan and New Your and Chicago and Atlanta, most high crimes states and they are committed by American people and no one makes a big deal as to this as in NJ makes no sense but to hurt our culture more and more let alone it been targeted for many years and hated on by to many in USA from all the none believers who call them selves Christians who are nothing more then a bunch of Hitler’s if you ask me hating on one culture just as religion. There are many fundamentalist on the news every day from CNN like Lou Dobbs and Jack Cafferty news room and they are the back burners that’s why they have that job to lead the nation and they have no faith as Christians when they can not love they neighbor or forgive, but Hispanic citizen already have to try harder now this

I’ve seen a few things to comment on here.
1. Actually, SLC is a very liberal city (just look up Mayor Rocky Anderson), and less Mormon than the rest of Utah (I think SLC proper is now only like 25% Mormon). And Mitt is not from Utah, so no culture to adhere to – just a religion. Also, Sen. Hatch isn’t running for POTUS, so why would Mitt attack him instead of Rudy (I think he is, actually, in this ad, rebutting what Hatch has put up on illegals & in-state tuition, which I also disagree with).
2. Those that think Mitt is ignoring other issues need to look at his web site for all of the policies he’s put forward on all other issues. He’s done MUCH more than any other candidate on all the other domestic & foreign issues in this election, and they’re all sound policies. Immigration is just the latest, but he DOES NOT ignore the other issues (watch some of the “Ask Mitt Anything” videos too).
3. I agree with Mitt that LEGAL immigration is a good thing, but sanctuary city’s need to be punished for effectively breaking federal law. He has said that he would first work to secure the boarder. Then enforce the current laws about employing an illegal so that the self-migration turns around (can’t get a job, so they go back on their own).
What I’d like to hear from Mitt for the future is that (and how he would do it) the process for legal immigration, not a special path for those already here illegally, would be simplified & streamlined to make it easier/quicker/less-expensive/more-secure to come here legally (as a temp worker, permanent resident, etc.).
We don’t need a special path for current illegals, we need a simpler path for all who want to come & contribute. And then let the current illegals follow that same, simplified path along with everyone else that wants to come. It would also be more secure because we’d know better who’s coming & going.

Religion isn’t the issue here. The issue is the fact that having open borders and being unable to know who’s here legally or illegally is a national security issue. If someone commits a crime, their legal status should be communicated to the feds so they can begin deportation proceedings and keep criminals out of our country. It doesn’t end crime, but it teaches them a lesson that we have enough criminals of our own and cannot allow foreign criminals to come here and commit crimes. I understand that most illegal immigrants are good people. But I also understand that the ones who commit crimes should be deported.

Dear Gloria we don’t hate the illegals. We just want them to not break our laws. We would like them to become temporary workers, high tech and otherwise, beome citizens by due process, and join any religion they choose or not. Especially those who want to be criminals we wish would stay home, we have enough of that kind already.
