Edwards Touts Red State Electability
ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson and Rick Klein report: Former senator John Edwards’ campaign is sharpening its argument that Edwards provides the Democrats the best chance to win in Republican states, in a new fundraising appeal signed by red-state Democrats that claims that only Edwards can "expand the map" for Democrats in 2008.
Today the Edwards camp announced a new online campaign called "Expand the Map." Campaign manager and former representative David Bonior said they are trying to elect the candidate that is the most electable Democrat.
The letter was co-signed by Democats including the House minority leaders in Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, and North Dakota — all states that voted for George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004.
"We believe that we have the best chance, in some areas, the only chance, of ensuring Democratic control throughout this country with John Edwards leading the charge for Democrats next fall," wrote Bonior in an e-mail to supporters.
"Donate today to support the one Democrat that Democrats in red and blue states like ours all across the country know will help sweep Democrats across the country to victory in 2008—John Edwards," according to the johnedwards.com donation page.
The fundraising appeal comes one day after Edwards won and "e-primary" conducted by the Texas Democratic Party. Some 8,000 Democrats participated in the online forum, and 38 percent supported Edwards, compared with 21 percent for Sen. Barack Obama and 20 percent for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.
"John Edwards is committed to a 50 state strategy," says Bonior. "Results like those in Texas show his strength in rural red states, and he is already focusing on intermountain states like Utah and Montana."
The electability argument has been a constant narrative in the 2008 race, where both a black man and a white woman have taken center stage in the road to the White House. Edwards, unable to tap into the energy and excitement that Obama and Clinton have both enjoyed, has told crowds across the country that having a Southerner at the top of the ticket will put more states in play in the presidential election — and give a boost to Democrats nation-wide.
"John Edwards is the candidate who can campaign and win in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky — places where Democrats can and should compete," Edwards said in a speech in Pittsburgh last week, after receiving a union endorsement.
Edwards made the argument even more directly through his travel schedule; last week, he became the first Democrat in the 2008 race to campaign in Montana.

Yeah, Silky Pony had real red state electability in 2004 when he gave up his Senate seat to the Republicans, lost his home state NC, and even lost his home county!

As a progressive democrat, John Edwards took the Senate seat of the ultra conservative Jesse Helms in North Carolina. When he left, it reverted back to the wife of ultra conservative Bob Doyle. He didn’t lose it; he didn’t run for re-election. Thats where it stands now. That fact should tell you about his electability in red states.

How does someone this delusional become a leader in the democratic party?

Cliff, you seem to suggest that Edwards did not run because of Elizabeth Dole and conservatives. You have no clue what the facts are so you have to be in the 10% of democrats who know of his “electability” in red states. Even Kerry says “Edwards was one of my biggest mistakes.”

What is JE really means is that Red State America is really Sexist (will not elect a woman president) and Racist (will not elect a black president).

It would be nice if you people would quit fussing about the past and things you have heard. Listen to the Edwards message and where he stands on the issues. It’s an election do your homework before you open mouth and insert foot.

Bob Coffee, I am not suggesting anything of the sort. He wanted to run for president this term and thats why he didn’t run for re-election to the senate. Edwards biggest mistake was John Kerry. Accepting the offer to be his running mate has been disastrous for Edwards. Kerry let Bush and the conservatives walk all over him(Swift Boated). Edwards had nothing to do with it. It was Kerry’s election to lose and that is just what he did; LOSE

To the man who was helping greatly in Iraq
Welcome freind in the country made of foreigner.
I am so glad that there are still some people with good heart who beleive that ther’s place for these who are or can be persecueted
As you can see this country cannot put on side his custom. Ther’s no one in this place who is not related with someone in Europe or somewhere else. That’s why people should remember that United State will always be UNITED STATES. A Country made with people from everywhere, a place for anyone who wants a better life, and wants to try. That is why people who claim that they are more Americans than those borned in the same Continent forget too easyly how their grand parents came in this Country. Their were boat people too and they come by air, but don’t want to go back because home is not good. Home cannot feed them. Every body knows there is no place like home. If they don’t want to go back, that means: It is not good for them. The law was supposed to be the same for everybody not in accordance with your race or ethecnic. You in the Congress, and you too who wants to be the head of United States need to know that the Country is like this and will still be, a Country of foreigner. That Good will. That is why it is the last to be descover, so people can ran a way when miseries that are driven them creasy, be free from tourments of the place where they live. United state will be a place for anyone who want to try. That’s Good’s will. Don’t try to change it. Anybody who understands the history of the world and this place will understand why I say that.
One more time WELCOME AND DO YOU BEST
