Clinton Praises Jena 6 Reversal

ABC News’ Eloise Harper Reports: Sen. Hillary Clinton D-N.Y, speaking in Charleston, South Carolina at the NAACP Freedom Fund Benefit, praised the recent decision regarding the case of Louisiana’s Jena 6. The decision made Friday by Louisiana’s Third Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the aggravated second-degree battery conviction of Mychal Bell and ruled that the youth had been tried improperly as an adult.

The case, involving six African-American teenagers from Jena, LA were charged first with attempted murder, then battery, after their actions in a school fight had left a white student in the emergency room for three hours with no permanent injuries.

"This case reminds us that the scales of justice are seriously out of balance when it comes to charging, sentencing, and punishing African-Americans" Clinton stated "it cries out for a full investigation from the Department of Justices’ Civil Rights division."

Clinton cited Hurricane Katrina as an example of how Americans feel "invisible" under this administration. While speaking to a predominately African-American audience about the hurricane, she said "you are invisible to this president even when you are on CNN."

Clinton also laid out elements of her civil rights plan. One new element of the plan is to help local school districts pursue voluntary integration and reduce racial inequality despite facing this "reactionary" Supreme Court. Other proposals include letting ex-felons have the right to vote after leaving prison and making Election Day a national holiday.

I am interested in knowing why Jena 6 is not talked about on the nightly news

Posted by: Maria | September 18, 2007, 4:57 pm 4:57 pm

What has happened to the white children in this case are they all just free while this African American students are facing a ruined future

Posted by: Maria | September 18, 2007, 5:01 pm 5:01 pm

The reason the Jena 6 is not talked about on you nightly news is because it is censored. Any race issues or taken out. You also do not hear about the young lady in Virginia. Listen to yourselves. This is the problem in the first place, people that think like you.

Why isn’t this being covered in mainstream media? This is a huge issue that we should be focusing on right now, not Britney Spears and her lackluster performances or O.J.’s trial. This is far more important.

I wonder what kind of outcry there would have been if the roles had been reversed and a group of whites had attacked an African American. Who would have been there to stand up for them? I don’t think that all these politically motivated speeches about justice and fairness would have been made. I think that the reverse would have been the case. They would have been calling for the whites to be prosecuted to the fullest. I feel that there are two sets of rules on both sides. It only seems to be on the national news when there is unjustice for African Americans.

Posted by: Bonnie | September 20, 2007, 9:51 am 9:51 am

Can you recall a time when whites ever had a unfair trial? This would never happen in white-america thats why this issue is so important. Why should anyone have to live in two different Americas? And the fact that it issue didn’t even make the nightly news yesterday is a even more outrage. This is one the biggest civil rights cases in my generation and it doesn’t even make the front page of a newspaper.

Posted by: Talaya | September 20, 2007, 9:59 am 9:59 am

I cannot understand why you would feel that the reverse situation would be the same or different.or why you feel that is the proper question to be asking @ a time like this. The question should be, how and why this is still going on in the United States? Why are there still places that people weather black or white are being persecuted, or treated unfairly based on the color of their skin or background. Why haven’t we as a county grown pass this, and what will it take to see some growth, and change in a country that is so rich in diversity and culture. Ask the right questions.

Can’t people tell the differance between a rope in a tree and physical contact. The school should have dealt with the boys in the rope ordeal and now the legal system is dealing with the beating by other boys. It is not against the law to hang a rope. Assult is against the law. The school drop the ball in this on. The school should of addressed the rope ordeal and suppended those boys when this first happen. If other boys get a slap on the wrist for beating a person because they felt anger in their civil right being denied, what kind of message will that send?

Posted by: Joni | September 20, 2007, 10:20 am 10:20 am

I think beating a kid almost to death by not just one but 6 attackers is a big difference than hanging a rope in a tree.
And why isnt this being listed as a hate crime? Oh yea… cause the victim was white. Today blacks are allowed to practice legal racism and the world has to take it.
And Hillary is a moron just like Sharpton and Jackson.

First of all we are all making these comments, but stop and say a prayer for these kids. For through prayer all things are possible. We are all under one nation one God. People its time to wake up, time is near. Yes the Jena 6 were treated unfairly; attempted second degree murder, come on now. Was anything broken or was any weapons used? I don’t understand this white/black thing in the society today. We all bleed red blood; lack of knowledge have alot to do with what is happening today to our young people. Hell I’m sure someone down the line in my family were slaves, but that don’t make me a slave. I work hard to support me and my family I don’t live for handouts. I am a firm beleiver in discipline, I do not uphold my kids in their wrong doing. right is right and wrong is wrong. My prayers go out to these boys and their family. I also pray for the white kids, because its not their fault, a child live what he/she learn. Below is what I have posted on my ice box at home:
THE BOTTOM LINE
FACE IT!!! Nobody owes you a living. What you achieve or fail to achieve in your lifetime is directly related to what you do or fail to do.
* No one chooses his parents or childhood, but you can choose your own direction.
* Everyone has problems and obstacles to overcome, but that too is relative to each individual.
* NOTHING IS CARVED IN STONE!!! You can change your life if you want to badly enough.
* Excuses are for losers: Those who take responsibility for their actions are the real winners.
* Winners meet life’s challenges head on, knowing there are no guarantees, and give it all they’ve got.
* And never think it is too late or too early to begin, time plays no favorites and will pass whether you act or not.
* TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE!! Dare to dream and takes risk….Compete. If you aren’t willing to work for your goals, don’t expect others to.

Hanging a noose from a tree to send a message that you are not welcomed is a hate crime. regardless if you are Jewish, Irish, Gay or whoever. Anything done against a certain group to show that you are not welcome is wrong. And for those who don’t know the white kids did jump and beat one of the black teens and nothing was done about it. The question then “is our justice system really that off?” The school did nothing. When the blacks were attack. The law did nothing when the blacks were attack. As long as you are white you can hang a noose from a tree and as a group beat a black and nothing happens. But if you are a group of blacks and get into a fight because someone taunts and harasses you, you are charged with attempted murder with the murder weapon being a tennis shoe.
What if the group involved was not black but Jewish or gays, what then.
Again we need to ask the right question. What is wrong with the American justice system?

Posted by: mike | September 20, 2007, 11:29 am 11:29 am

First…As for there never being unjust trials of whites, it does happen. It just doesn’t get the publicity a case might get if there is a potential race issue.
Fairly recently, those Duke University Lacrosse players were falsely accused and put through the wringer. In the beginning, I was all for supporting the alleged victim IF it was the truth. But it wasn’t the truth. So those young men did suffer unjustly. It wasn’t a fair trial because the prosecutor was a liar and knew it, and took advantage of the alleged victim as well.
Secondly…Joni & David, you echoed my thoughts exactly. I feel that hanging nooses in a tree was despicable and hateful. The school should have dealt with those students for what they did, in an appropriate manner. There should have been some kind of harassment charge brought or something, and the court should have had something to charge those kids with. Of course, others might argue some freedom of speech thing. In the same way, the KKK can still hold demonstrations, no matter how much most of us hate it. I hate it. I hate racism. I get sick of some of the so-called “free speech” that is allowed to go on, too.
But hanging nooses is FAR different from if the white students had then proceeded to try and ACTUALLY hang black students with said nooses. In the same respect, SIX black students beating the crap out of ONE white student (even assuming the white student was involved with the nooses) is far, far different from hanging nooses in a tree. They knocked the kid unconscious. 6 against 1 isn’t a fair fight, no matter what.
It’s so frustrating that people can’t seem to see the difference. One person was actually harmed by six people. While the nooses were disgusting, no one actually got physically harmed by them.
And how on earth is six people beating the daylights out of one racist going to do ANY good for changing race relations. It’s NOT! If anything, it will fuel the hate.
And Birda, your post was fantastic. I pray every day for peace between people of all colors and backgrounds. I’ll be adding all these young people to my prayers as well. LOVED what you have on your refrigerator and will probably put it on mine. I’ve known both types of people…those who came from awful circumstances and were good, good, loving people…and those who came from bad circumstances and felt it justified the bad way they treated others. I have nothing but admiration for those who rise above adversity and prove that cycles CAN be broken.

Posted by: jet | September 20, 2007, 11:39 am 11:39 am

Where is there information about the white students jumping the black student first? I haven’t seen that in what I’ve read. Just an uproar that white students hung nooses in a tree on school grounds, and that six black students then beat one white student unconscious.
If that, indeed, is the case, then there is definitely an imbalance in the way justice is being carried out.

This is just absolutely sad.. The white man doing what he does best…

Posted by: Kellye Jones | September 20, 2007, 11:48 am 11:48 am

The ignorance that is being spouted by people saying the hanging of the nooses is “ok” and doesn’t actually mean anything is absolutly ridiculous. Whites do this all the time “It is ok to call blacks colored folk” It is ok to have preference in business and government” I’m here to say no it is not “ok” Whites benefit their kids can hang nooses and parade around in klan outfits all day long. But you let a black man hold up a black fist in this country such as the black panthers and what happens. They are tossed in jail or murdered. People in this country white, black or whatever need to wake up there are two systems of justice and there are two systems for everything when it pertains to race in our nation. And this is written by a black man with a MBA so no I’m not stupid or ignorant and I have an education. The kids should be punished but the attempt to jail them for twenty years is an outrage. So, my question is why are whites focusing on the kids being punished instead of focusing on the fact they are trying to be jailed for twenty years?

Posted by: Velton Evans | September 20, 2007, 12:04 pm 12:04 pm

Of course there is going to be nothing about the white kid jumping the black kid it is “ok” it is not a big deal. Also, threating black people with a shotgun is not a big deal either. This was done by the whites that hung the nooses according to several accounts. Know your facts.

living in the greatest country in the world, yet people foster hate every day.We are in Irag fighting for liberties, but are guilty of violations here.

Posted by: sister gal | September 20, 2007, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm

For any person to say “I can ruin your life with a stroke of my pen” is wrong.
Google Jena 6 and read the reports. I have been following this for about 2 months and there are a lot of things that are not being talked about that led up to current events. The kid that got beat up by 6 students was wrong. But you can not harassas a group of people and not expect something to happen. I don’t care who or what color you are. The other things is fights happen all the time right or wrong regardless they happen. But unless a weapon is used attemped murder is the last charge that comes to mind. especially when the kid got up and went to a party that same night. The town officials allowed things to go this far. We can all only pray that the right leaders help lead us to a better tomorrow where we as AMERICANS can rise to be a great nation that the world looks up to.
this was taken from one aritcle. We can all comment all each event but the fact is that the issues in this town were going to explode at somepoint. We can only pray that other places wake up and address their own issues before that get to a similar point. Best wishes to everyone involved.
“JACQUIE SOOHEN: A series of incidents followed throughout the fall. In October, a black student was beaten for entering party. Later that month, a white student pulled a gun on a group of black students at a gas station, claiming self-defense. The black students wrestled the gun away and reported the incident to police. They were charged with assault and robbery of the gun. No charges were ever filed against the white students in either incident. Then, in late November, someone tried to burn down the high school, creating even more tension. “

In the end, it’s just sad to me that it should be like this. People from different races fighting each other simply because of race. It’s nothing new, which makes it all the more tragic. Just so sad that with all the “advances” made in our society, hate and conflict continue, for any reason at all.
I have family members who have been on the receiving end of ethnic tensions, and I am white. I come from Hungarian, Polish, Irish & German immigrants who arrived in the 1900s – 1910s. My maternal grandfather’s family was Hungarian, and Catholic. They were farmers. The Klan forced them to watch as Klansmen slaughtered their livestock…because they were immigrants and were Catholic. My maternal grandfather had the crap beat out of him by the brothers of a girl he dated…because he was Hungarian.
A cousin is in a mixed marriage, and has served in the military since graduating high school (he’s probably around 40 now). He and his wife were relieved at different times when they moved to areas that were more accepting of mixed marriages, because at times they had been stationed in areas that were not accepting.
My dad spent over 30 years working in education/counseling. He is a good, good man. He also was passed over for a certain position for about 10 years before getting it. He was plenty experienced and educated, moreso than some people who got it at different times, but because of affirmative action he didn’t.
My mom became a public school teacher in the late 60s. She recounts the school being flooded with kids shouting “kill Whitey!!!” including one little one who was walking right next to her, even talking to her “Hi, Miss_____!” Then my mom said, “so-and-so…look at me…what color is my skin?” The student’s reaction… “oh, not you, Miss______!” Even though my mom was white.
Hate seems to permeate so much of our society. It makes me sad that things are like this, always. Whether it’s racial conflict, or ethnic conflict, or religious conflict. Why is it like this?
Oh, and religious conflict… I’m Catholic, and am amazed by what people are able to say and do against Catholics ALL THE TIME. In other countries, Catholics are still, to this day, dying for our faith. Has anyone seen some of the stuff out there? We’re frequently targeted by the same ol’ Klan members who target blacks and other racial/ethnic minorities. My point is not to start a religious debate, but to state that discrimination and hatred rear their ugly heads in other areas as well, and go unchecked (and even encouraged by the same media that leaves out important details like the ones about this case) ALL the time.
I just pray all the time for peace to someday reign. It’s a scary world we live in.

In 2007; America is still such a racist country. First, if we are to be treated equally, the books of law need to be changed. We are still considered less than human, according to the constitution.
Second, black boys under a white tree, in 2007? What are we doing still practicing such sepatism in 2007? The white children parents should be ashamed for still teaching their children such ignorance. Third, a black boy was jumped, nothing happened. A white boy pulled a shotgun on some of the Jena 6 boys – nothing happened. The black boys confiscated the shotgun and were charged with theft of a weapon. Would you give someone back a weapon they were going to use on you? Nothing happened to the white boy for pulling the shotgun. Hanging nooses are like hanging swaztickas (sp)? When are we going to wake up America. This is not about race, it’s about equality. The white boys should have been suspended from school and charges should have been filed because a hate crime was committed. God Bless America, because we need it!

Thats not fair thow us as African Americans are treated because of how times used to be. Still people in the court see us African Americans as trouble like we come with a label. But they fail to relize that most of us have things going for us like the ones that were in the fight why should they be charged like that when a fight similar to that on accured in that school by caucasion students and all they got was suspension.Because that really don’t make since to me.

Please be aware that there was a beating of a black student by white students that for some reason never gets in the mainstream media. This preceeded the noose hanging and the beating of the white student. But I guess that you wouldn’t know that because as with everything, whites control the media. Maybe you should talk to your “friends” and tell them to stop hating Black people just because they are Black. Like with anything there is good and bad in all things. It just amazes me how whites want to condem all Blacks when one of us does something but when whites do something, they are somehow segregated to a bad group vs. the good group. Stop being hypocrites, it’s disgusting! You’re so busy trying to keep your foot on our necks that your allowing people from outside the US to come in and terrorize the entire country, buy up all the property, and regulate our economy. For the most part, Blacks commit more crime against other Blacks so don’t try to us that as an excuse for being a hater.

I’m afraid we cannot trust everyone who blogs here because some may be trying to incite negativity between the races and PRETEND to be who they are REALLY not just to try to antagonize and provoke others to steer away from what is really the issue at hand. I believe it is safe to say that the majority of Americans simply want peace and justice. They don’t want hand-outs, they are not criminals, they want equality in the justice system and all other areas of society. Oftentimes, whites are unaware of just how prevalent injustices take place because they are less likely to be subjected to that type of situation. That does not justify dismissing the fact that, yes, this injustice happened in Jena, just as it has happened and is happening all over this country and around the world. Do some real research. Let’s stop talking AT each other and talk TO each other. Let’s not bury our heads in the sand and pretend that this is not an issue that needs to be addressed…in a logical, peaceful, open-minded and thoughtful manner.

Wow, it’s evident based off the replies posted on this form that many of you know just as little about the facts of this case as you do about your own American history. Allow me to spell it out for you:
Last fall in Jena, Louisiana, the day after two Black high school students sat beneath the “white tree” on their campus, nooses were hung from the tree. When the superintendent dismissed the nooses as a “prank,” more Black students sat under the tree in protest. The District Attorney then came to the school accompanied by the town’s police and demanded that the students end their protest, telling them, “I can be your best friend or your worst enemy… I can take away your lives with a stroke of my pen.”1
A series of white-on-black incidents of violence followed, and the DA did nothing. But when a white student was beaten up in a schoolyard fight, the DA responded by charging six black students with attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
It’s a story that reads like one from the Jim Crow era, when judges, lawyers and all-white juries used the justice system to keep blacks in “their place”–but it’s happening today. The families of these young men are fighting back, but the odds are stacked against them. Together, we can make sure their story is told, that this becomes an issue for the Governor of Louisiana, and that justice is provided for the Jena 6. It starts now. Please add your voice:
The noose-hanging incident and the DA’s visit to the school set the stage for everything that followed. Racial tension escalated over the next couple of months, and on November 30, the main academic building of Jena High School was burned down in an unsolved fire. Later the same weekend, a black student was beaten up by white students at a party. The next day, black students at a convenience store were threatened by a young white man with a shotgun. They wrestled the gun from him and ran away. While no charges were filed against the white man, the students were arrested for the theft of the gun.2
That Monday at school, a white student, who had been a vocal supporter of the students who hung the nooses, taunted the black student who was beaten up at the off-campus party and allegedly called several black students “nigger.” After lunch, he was knocked down, punched and kicked by black students. He was taken to the hospital but was released and was well enough to go to a social event that evening.3
Six Black Jena High students were expelled from school, arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder. Bail was set so high — between $70,000 and $138,000 — that the boys were left in prison for months as families went deep into debt to release them.4
The first trial ended last month, and Mychal Bell, who has been in prison since December, was convicted of aggravated battery and conspiracy to commit aggravated battery (both felonies) by an all-white jury in a trial where his public defender called no witnesses. During his trial, Mychal’s parents were ordered not to speak to the media and the court prohibited protests from taking place near the courtroom or where the judge could see them.
Mychal is scheduled to be sentenced on July 31st, and could go to jail for 22 years.5 Theo Shaw’s trial is next. He will finally make bail this week.
The Jena Six are lucky to have parents and loved ones who are fighting tooth and nail to free them. They have been threatened but they are standing strong. We know that if the families have to go it alone, their sons will be a long time coming home. They will lose precious years to Jena’s outrageous attempt to maintain a racist status quo.

Wait until it hits the fan that Hillary waited TOO long to respond to this situation. Obama’s camp sent out a press release and supported justice in this situation after it happend. Bandwagon riding isn’t going to help Hilary win. If my potential president can’t voice his or her opinion before all others have been layed on the table, I do question their leadership abilities.
If polls and surveys dictate your stance on issues then I don’t want you leading our country. We’ve tried that before and it DOESN”T WORK!
Im sorry to say but her p.r. people, her support staff and her own convictions should have been a little sharper.

Bonnie…if the roles were reversed, the blacks around the country would want to have them tried as adults. These 6 ganged up on one person, regardless of color, they are punks who ganged up on one kid, they could very well have killed him and should be tried as adults. Jackson & Sharpton stop hating and find real jobs LOSERS!!!

The 6 thugs whom you refer to as innocent should not only be prosecuted but should be prosecuted under the hate crime statute, they attacked and savagely beat a white boy for just being that WHITE. If the rolls had been reversed the black would be calling for the death penalty. they were nothing more than a pack of thugs. It is incedents like this where they are black and in the south automatically it is an injustice and racism. way to keep racism alive. The only racism here is coming from the blacks and these stupid protesters. I am from louisiana and if a white person walks into a black neighborhood 9 times out ten they will be assualted. As for jackson and Sharpton being the self serving glory hounds they are when the dust settles they will not even rember the boys names all they are there for is publicity and to keep racism alive and well in america. If these thugs get away with this it will send a clear message that a black person can get away with anything in america simply by crying racism and soon prosecuters will be afraid to even charge let alone prosecute a black for any crime, way to set race relations back 50 years Mr. jackson and Big Al. As for the blacks in america dont you have more important causes to champion. How about trying to stop all the black on black murders going on in this country most which are related to drugs and gangs how about teaching your children to follow the rules and become productive citizens of this country instead of letting them act like packs of wild animals and growing up thinking white america owes them something

Many of you in this blog like to regard and disregard the facts of this case to your own discretion and make backwards generalizations to further separate whites and blacks with venomous rhetoric. There are also subtle and not so subtle references to some very old stereotypes which are used to disregard the validity of the issue at hand. If you are a true American who simply want equality in the judicial system for EVERYONE, please be aware of such trickery and ignore these blatant and malicious separatist remarks.

To Eli Bowen:
Some of your comments would be correct if the whites had been treated equally badly when they were assaulting blacks, but that is not the case in this town. This town is racist and treats whites and blacks differently.
Not all whites are mischievous good boys, and not all blacks are ‘hoodlums’. In this case, the black children were responding to intense provocation and the result wasn’t severe enough to justify the penalties or the bond amounts.
As to the behavior of blacks, there are some behavior issues I’ve seen, that probably stem from a period of time when blacks had to hold so much expression in for fear of being killed by whites, that when that time ended they took pleasure in being as loud as they chose for once.
This will take a time to get over, and I guess you aren’t around enough blacks to know that they don’t all behave that way. And some actually work for a living and buy houses, conribute to the economy, etc.
Finally, from all of the U.S. history I can see, yes, America does owe blacks quite a lot for their hard yet unpaid or lower paid labor, but they probably won’t get it.

God Bless America? The last time I checked, He’s done that and then some. God forgive America and help us to turn from our wicked ways is more of what we should be asking. We kicked God out of schools and teach our children all of the wrong things and then expect them to do better. I think that people are misunderstanding our frustration here. People are only ingesting a portion of the facts and accusing us of being unfair. If you check the laws hanging a noose from a tree IS in fact a hate crime. Let’s look at what we are trying to get everyone to see, which is the BIG PICTURE to include all of the events that lead to this. Then if someone can provide an answer as to why these facts are being ignored by everyone then maybe we will have a better understanding of where those who don’t agree are coming from. FACT: One of the white students pulled a shotgun on one of the 6 boys who in turn took the weapon from him and didn’t retaliate. He called the police which was the right thing to do. He then faced charges for attempted murder. FACT: These same boys attended a party and were beaten up by the white students there. All we want to know is why there is a double standard. We are not saying that what these boys did was ok. We are saying why punish them and not the others. Thats the bottom line. Why did this happen so long ago and the media is just broadcasting it. It’s because we as a people began to sign petitions and protest behind the scenes. We didn’t just start protesting because the media got wind of it, this has been an ongoing movement from conception. I dont hate anyone because of where they are from. I educated myself and my children and we work hard for all that we have. In fact, neither of my children would allow me to pay for college as this was something they wanted accomplish for themselves. Stop believing we are all looking for handouts and pats on the back. We just want the law to be more leveled. My little sister was stabbed 13 times with a hunting knife by her husband in front of their 3 children and when white people learn that he is a white man they are more astonished because they automatically assumed he was black. There is bad in all races. When will we embrace that reality? I can’t hate because of “a few bad people”. I hate hate!! I am praying that we learn to see ourselves the way God sees us. Through love and thats it!

We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal and have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We are all in this one little world together and we must find away to work out our problems in a peaceful manner. We all have differences and likes and dislikes.you do not have to be like me and Ido not have to be like you.But we need to be able to live together and work out our problems in a peace ful way.Name calling ,anger, hate only make a bad thing worse.Violence does not bring peace.Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.By Clear Thinker

This is albout a lack of respect for others.Blacks are human beings just like whites are human beings. This name calling is disrespectfull and inhuman.People are carring M.L.K.signs,they need to go back and read what M.L.K.preached about and what M.L.K.stood for and yes lost his life over.M.L.KING wanted to be treated with respect and have his rights the same as any other human being. He wanted blacks and whites to live together and get along with each other.M.L.K.was not into name calling and putting people down.M.L.KING was not into violence. He sought peace. But even DR.KING would tell you if he was alive today that the only real peace comes from the PRINCE OF PEACE JESU CHRIST.Seek the PRINCE OF PEACE JESUS CHRIST and HE will give you peace in you life and love in you heart for your fellow-man.By Clear Thinker

When is the term “racism” going to stop and people let the judicial system do its job?

She is just playing politics and just saying what she thinks everyone wants to here, just like everything else she has said. even when she ran the country in the 90′s.

Its time that all racism end.

Those who don’t see the connection between the events (nooses, blacks getting beaten and threatened with riffles and Barker being jumped) To those who dont understand why everyone is hurt and upset by the injustice that the Jena 6 faces are simply in denial of the fact that racism is alive in America; sometimes its covert and sometimes it’s overt. It’s time for a reality check. To those who are offended by others marching for equal rights, the truth hurts. Stop complaining, face the facts, and join the fight!!!!!!!!!
Given the biased racist nature of the DA, Michael Bell prior convictions cannot be held against him. Who knows the legitimacy of the prior convictions?
Justin Barker did not deserve to be jumped but please realize that he wasn’t innocent. He taunted the Black students for only God knows how long.
All of this talk about 6 to 1 is ridiculous. Do you really think that in such a racially charged town that other whites would just sit there and let a white get beat???? Views of this case are so distorted it’s a shame.
The only truth is that there is an unequal justice system exists in this country and it’s about time that a light shines on this unspoken truth. The world watched during the Hurricane Katrina tragedy and saw how Blacks and Whites are treated differently in this country. A double standard exists and a change needs to take place!!!!

Aside from reading ALL of the “slanted” news reports pertaining to this case – has anyone on here actually seen all of the incontrovertible facts?
Sure, the punishment did NOT fit the crime and that’s what this is about. An overzealous prosecutor who should be investigated for showing obvious bias and if found in the wrong should be prosecuted under the Bias Crime statutes.
We’ve another Dennis Nifong brewing here but now “against” the black populace of a town which is 1 to 10 in black to white citizenry.
All the rest is window dressing!!!

It sounds to me like both almost all the white and black teens in this case would all be considered bullies and violent kids even by their own peer groups. This is what the case should be about and not suck in all the good people of either race as even suggesting anyone’s race should used as an excuse for teen violence. These are exceptionally violent kids who have one last chance at getting their act together before they go down that prison lifestyle path. Society should come together, intervene and get these kids back in different schools, supervised with one clear option, graduate with a B or better, get into a career path, college, service, or trade, do a humble useful community service or go to jail. Its either up or out and forget all this race baiting nonsense. These are self destructing young adults, but before we throw them away, give them an adult chance earned by their own proven efforts to save themselves and their parent’s hopes. And all the parents of these kids should be called to account for what is going on in thier homes to produce such senseless hate. These people know too little of life to hate so and we should not excuse such laziness. For cynical groups to use them for their own purposes in this obssessive racial power struggle just reinforces the immaturity of our society and no wonder our children act so badly as they know all too well what the rest of us do. We give them nothing real to believe in.

From all I seen on tv, it would appear that sharpton considers what happened a fight. Where I come from six people jumping on one is not a fight, but a cowardly beating. With that said, I think the charges against the six were extreme. I do think they should be expelled from school( since the beating occured on school grounds) and their parents should have to pay for the beaten boy’s hospital bill. The one in jail should be released, and all of them should be put on probation.

My grandfather use to say; {If you start off wrong you will end up wrong}. If you look at how this country did with the Indians, Chines when they were in slaved to build the railroad and the 400 years of slavery to the African. This country hands is bloody with hate and hate crimes from long ago. And it will never go away. The only answer to the problems is for Christ to come back. And he will give blessing to the peace makers and judgement to the evil ones.

Your post is provocative and engaging, especially since the race issue within the United States will be a hot topic in the up and coming presidential debates. Undoubtedly, immigration and the partiality of the criminal justice system are all problems that any future president will have to face. Naturally, Hillary Clinton would be applauding the reversal of one of the Jena-6’s harsh sentences, especially at an NAACP fundraising event. If she had reacted otherwise, her black supporters would probably look towards another presidential hopeful. Clinton’s efforts to gain votes, especially within the African-American community, seem to be appealing to the sensitive issues that impact them, specifically Katrina and the Jena-6, but how much of her presidential promises can she keep? The deep-rooted issue of racism and bias will not just dissolve itself if you give a lot of money and benefits to the hurricane Katrina victims. As for the Jena-6 incident, I agree with Clinton that social awareness needs to be funneled into the school system. You mention one of Clinton’s civil rights plans, the “voluntary integration” of local school districts to prevent instances like Jena-6, but this plan is only a stepping stone. Clinton’s plan seems rather undeveloped, providing schools with a choice on whether or not to integrate when the issue of racism threatens one core American value, equality.

This is not gotten “out of hand” this needs to be taken by the right hands. I’ve also heard conversations about how hillary ran the white house while Bill was in term. Wether it’s true or not, WHO CARES, I would love it if it were true. I’ve seen Bills attitude towards things and I cant wait until election day to vote in Hillary and Bill. This nation needs out of these past 4 years and let laws be made not only for out troops but also for our very own African Americans.

I am beginning to translate “race issues” and all talk of race to Blacks exclusively. Maybe the whole Southern Slavery era “issues” have never been settled from their view, as Whites, Hispanics, and Asians seem to be not so unhappy and complaining. Or maybe Blacks are just high maintenance people fundamentally. Everything always seems to be about them, they wear the shiny Bling, say “look at me, look at me” do the testosterone and booty overdrive thing, have a unique ability to run afoul of the law, and well, keep a loud show going on. Maybe thats just the way they are. Why the other races should self denigrate themselves all the time buying the black generated racist arguments thrown at them as their fault is beyond me. Its a social scam. I don’t know, does this all go back to Southern Plantation slave owners and the rest of the nation is somehow expected to pay a permanent price for that? But yes the Clintons do pander to that notion which automatically excludes the rest of us over equally important personal quality of life issues. If we are all equal, we need to stop caving into others high maintenance cravings. Its clear they will never be satisfied, ever, so why even pretend. The kids who threw up the nooses were reacting to something that was territorial, and yes a group territory, and now they have paid as a race by getting physically and nationally stomped, labeled as racist while immune racists physically assulted them, telling them not even their own bodies are to be respected given any excuse. And an innocent tree pays the price and gets chopped down leaving a barren landscape for them to fight over now. Sounds like LA. Criminalizing and racializing this solves nothing other than perpetuate a game of tag with ever changing rules. The parents, the elders, the school and court administrators of the country failed to show leadership, once again, where it could have mattered. Its not about being fair as the whole game is incredibly stupid and wasteful. The Clintons say a lot of popular things but they really administrate pretty conservatively and don’t really challenge the system at all. Its just more of the same with a slight shift in priorities and lip service. Bill Clinton had a fantastic opportunity as President to change things and he didn’t. Maybe he couldn’t, but he never made the case to the American People. After 8 years of Bush a lot of people will be happy for a new President and who wouldn’t. His term has so depressed people and cynacized them its not even funny. As president you can do a lot with the domestic budget to improve things for people, but rather than do that his administration has hired people based on loyalty tests who then obstruct these budgets from doing anything real. This is never talked about as they have us all focused on the three wars we know of. But Clinton is just another shade of this so to frame them as some magical answer based on the jena 6 is just one more example of what good pandering will get you in this country. Are the jena 6 supposed to be social hero’s like the Chicago 7? That’s pure spin at its best and why the only thing changing in America is the spin has gotten more outrageous and people just swallow it hook line and sinker without question. Because to question it would automatically bring on the followup, “so you’re a racist”. That is how shut down and closed a society we have become. We are a spun society in the new century.

well, im tired of it. If the school had addressed the rope incident correctly and had not been afraid to stand up and say this is very wrong! you dont hang a noose in a tree, knowing what that means to all black ppl.
