Craig Reconsiders Resigning, After Specter Shows Support

ABC News’ Tahman Bradley Reports: Idaho Sen. Larry Craig (R) is rethinking his decision to step down September 30 as he battles to reverse a guilty plea following an arrest in a Minnesota airport men’s room.

"As he stated on Saturday, Senator Craig intends to resign on September 30th. However, he is fighting these charges, and should he be cleared before then, he may, and I emphasize may, not resign," Craig spokesman Dan Whiting told ABC News.

Craig, who has represented the state of Idaho for 27 years in Congress, first in House and now in the Senate, announced Saturday that he would resign amid pressure from members of his own party to step down in the wake of the scandal.

Whiting told ABC News that Craig found motivation to fight for his job and reputation after Sen. Arlen Specter R-Pa., showed he was in Craig’s corner Sunday saying Craig had resigned prematurely.

"I’d still like to see Senator Craig fight this case, Specter said on "Fox News Sunday". "I’d like to see Larry Craig go back to court, seek to withdraw his guilty plea and fight the case."

The senator has a long way to go in earning back the support of Republicans who moved swiftly to denounce Craig’s allegedly actions. Both President Bush and the leading Republican in the Senate Mitch McConnell R-Ky., called Craig’s move to resign "the right decision."

Craig did not show up to his office in Washington, DC Tuesday and will not be in tomorrow either, Whiting said Tuesday night.

Craig’s children said Tuesday on ABC’s "Good Morning America" that their father was not gay and was a victim of circumstance.

Craig was arrested on June 11 and pled guilty on August 8 to disorderly conduct.

This guy was innocent after pleading guilty, straight after being gay, and now staying after claiming he was leaving – and the Republicans hyped up Kerry for being a flip-flop.
The biggest bunch of hypocrites I’ve ever seen.

Why was he in a public restroom in the first place. As much as he travels he certainly must have access to the Northwest Airlines VIP Club. Isn’t the bathroom in the VIP club cleaner and he is less likely to be bothered there. HMMMM

FINALLY! TELL THEM WHERE TO GO LARRY!! You did nothing illegal while a democrat congressman had $90,000 in bribe money removed from his freezer by the FBI goes to work every day! William Jefferson sure isn’t resigning – in fact he’s considered a model for the democrat party. Asking or signaling for sex is not a crime…and if it were, every bar in the US would be closed tomorrow!

Please don’t tell us there’s nothing wrong with Craig’s actions, because a Democrat got away with it. It’s wrong for BOTH parties, quit defending the idiot. If he didn’t do it, he pled guilty and is therefore too stupid to govern us.

I just don’t understand why the man continues to say he is not gay. A man does not have to be “gay” to have sex with another man – he is probably bi-sexual but will NEVER EVER admit it to anyone including himself. So what if he wants to have sex with a guy? His problem – getting caught and being hypocritcal. So many politicans so badly want the religious to vote for them and will shamelessly use the “family values” and moral right to get it that it has to rebound on them at some point. As to the comment above about William Jefferson, he will be going to jail. He may be working now but obviously has not decided he wants a speedy trial.

Sen. Craig should not give up just because some idiot thought he was gay. It seems in today’s society we can”t do anything without publically judged by someone else’s personal misconceptions. And since he is a Senator, he is very likely to be set up. How many does that make in the last couple of years? You ang in there Larry. We, the people of Idaho know your a moral decent man. a

He never should have plead guilty if he can’t take responsibility for his actions. What a pathetic loser. If he doesn’t step down, he will be impeached and kicked out.

Sitting in the stall he thought of “Singing in the Rain” and began tapping his feet. Then the fanciful idea came to him that it might be raining in the next stall, so he put his hand under the partition palm up, to check. Of course, the whole idea of gay assignation is absurd. Was he even taking a plane that day by the way?

Posted by: Googleb oy | September 4, 2007, 11:18 pm 11:18 pm

deb; “…I just don’t understand why the man continues to say he is not gay…” Really? You have NEVER heard of a homosexual who cannot accept their own sexual orientation? It’s not that uncommon. Craig’s case a sad deal but he’s not a hypocrite. No senator is dogmatically attached to issues supported by their race, religion, nationality or sexual orientation. …if you don’t agree, you must also be shocked that we heterosexuals could support special homosexual rights (marriage) or whites could support special treatment for black Americans. …yet that is exactly what the democrat media would have your believe….

Posted by: cheesetoppings69 | September 4, 2007, 11:25 pm 11:25 pm

Hey cheesetopping – what are you raving about now? Pelosi and the Dem Congress delivered 100% on their first 100 days agenda. And her approval rating is much higher than 3%. Where do you get your ridiculous disinformation from? Stop watching Fox News and join the real world. You look ridiculous.

I hope he does stay on – it will hurt the GOP even more in the ’08 election. Who knows, Craig’s stupidity may even hand the Dems a veto-proof majority. It’s kind of amazing how quickly the GOP and the Conservative movement collapsed under the weight of its own failure.

Posted by: Honest Abby | September 4, 2007, 11:37 pm 11:37 pm

Honest Abby – not really, I think the collapse of the conservative movement was a long time coming. It’s small government ideology failed all the way back under Reagan and the rest of it’s failed, false ideology was laid bare as a failure by Bush and his incompetence. The Cons are done for. It’s about time.

Posted by: jmcalli1946 | September 4, 2007, 11:41 pm 11:41 pm

Thanks for the thoughtful response, Anje – but I think there are still alot of very stubborn people out there who are so filled with hate for Democrats and Liberals that they will continue to vote against their own best interests out of pure spite and resentment. This is the hardcore of what’s left of the Conservative movement and the GOP majority. They don’t know that they’ve already lost and time has moved on, and that makes them dangerous. They’re kind of like the Japanese soldiers abandoned in the Pacific during WWII – and they scare me!

Posted by: Honest Abby | September 4, 2007, 11:43 pm 11:43 pm

Anje – I’m not worried about them. There’s always been a lunatic rightwing fringe in this country whose bark is much worse than it’s bite. Think of loonies like the John Birchers or the Goldwater Republicans. Bush was their last shot at real power and he blew it big time. These fools are a spent force in American politics and their high water mark is behind them. Don’t fear them. Just laugh at them. That’s all they deserve.

One other thing…. Craig’s gonna have to run against a human being (a democrat) in the next election… and he’s going to lose. The Democratic Party needs that seat. This is what the Republicans were afraid of… Craig running for re-election.

Here is a set of circumstances tailor-made for a Democratic sweep in 2008. Following up on the historic change of last November. The right, should it try to obscure the facts in this case and come to the defence of a truly insolent moron, well, it will get what it deserves. Relegation to the back benches. For a generation.

While Craig’s bathroom stall two-step may be quite talented, I think his current political waltz is about as clumsy as a walrus on goofballs.
For the rest of us, we can take home these lessons:
1) You can’t state that you’re guilty, then complain that you’re innocent. No one will believe you.
2) You can’t resign and then unresign. No one will vote for you (although Idaho is still conservative enough to vote for Atilla the Hun’s righter-wing cousin Oscar the Hun, and may yet forgive him provided he meets his quota of the typical tilting at windmills)
3) Claiming the press is biased against you doesn’t work if the public has to believe that Idaho newspapers are hiring cops to hang out in airport bathrooms waiting… waiting… waiting for you
4) “Jiminy!” is a great interjection.

Posted by: Boss Tweed | September 5, 2007, 1:40 am 1:40 am

“Larry. We, the people of Idaho know your a moral decent man.” Alice you are in serious denial. The guy lied, obfuscated and is a hypocrit. Let me explain the obfuscation: If he is not gay, he must be Bisexual. There is nothing wrong with being gay or bisexual. But being caught and then denying it is pure foolishness. If he had been honest with everyone, and himself, from the beginning, he never would be in this position. Power, and the pursuit of power, corrupts.

It is a sign of character and integrity to own up to your actions, and the Republicans in the past who have had sex scandals that admitted it and confessed to it earned some honor in my book. This man has no honor.. pleading guilty and then deciding he’s not guilty, resigning and then deciding he’s not resigning if he is acquitted. This is not a man I feel deserves to be running our country, not because of what he did (I really don’t care about sexual preferences), but because he won’t own up to the decisions he made!
Just imagine if Bush came out and said, “Wait a sec, I didn’t want to invade Iraq.. if we lose the war then I’ll take back my war declaration.” Yeah right! As much as I disagree with Bush and his policies, at least the man has the BALLS to follow through with what he sets out to do!

Posted by: Jeff | September 5, 2007, 4:36 am 4:36 am

So, Arlen Specter is ALMOST defending his actions? Maybe Specter should rethink his position on Republicans soliciting Gay sex in Public Restrooms. Maybe Specter was in the next stall….
Does anyone actually believe Craig was set-up by a “crooked cop”? Maybe the next Republican convention can be held in a Public Restroom, save everyone that long, tedious walk. They are probably very tired from all the “handshaking”. Funny thing, when you point a finger at others, like the GOP, there are 3 more pointing back.

to dilute this man’s lewed behavior, just because other people had lewd behavior is ridiculous. The man did a lewed act in a public men’s bathroom unbecoming to a senator of Idaho. Especially hypocritical because he voted against gays again and again. He was several time accused of gay behavior over the years and kept denying it. As a senator he is open for black mail because of his life style. He brought shame to his state by acting as a complete moron. If he goes back to Washington they will impeach him anyhow. Face it dude…. you have homosexual urges and thats why you were staring at the officer in the next stall and playing footsie and then lying about trying to pick up a piece of paper that was nonexistent. Then you try to show the officer your Senate ID. You are just another arrogant Republican hypocrite. If a military person did what you did they would be bounced from the military and their life ruined under the policy that you promote. No straight man stares at another man in a public bathroom..no straight man tries to rub another guys legs in a public bathroom. I work for a police department and I hope this officer sues you for slander and defamation of character. If there is a problem with sex in public places officers are obligated to check it out or do stings. They weren’t in there to entrap you or anyone else. Take your wife and go get tested for HIV. From what I’ve read..you have a history of cruising for gay sex. Be a man, butch up and just admit what you did, resign and then find a suitable partner. I feel sorry for your wife. I have no sympathy for you.. to the people in Idaho..wake up..this is 2007 … and there are all kinds of people in this world- gay, straight, bi-sexual and those in denial — like your Senator Larry boy.

Victim of circumstance? You are not a victim if you created the circumstance. His whining children are probably on all the talk show circuits trying to bolster the reputation of dear old dad as he continues to try and snake himself out of the mess he got himself into.
I’m 56 years old and during my entire life, my hand has not gone under the stall of a person sitting in the stall next to me. What’s the circumstance here? That Craig’s hand was simply lying there when the wall separating the stalls moved of its own accord thus placing his hand underneath? Give me a break.
It has been mentioned before that this is not a gay issue. His kids can defend him on that ad nauseam. But they will commit a fallacy by asserting that what he did is to be equated with being gay. It is to be equated with unlawful, perverse, behavior. Wake up kids.

Posted by: Germanized | September 5, 2007, 8:58 am 8:58 am

Really dumb legally. He writes laws and doesn’t know how they work. Any lawyer worth the minimum fee could have told him that his career was on the line, and that it,too, would “go away” with a guilty plea. Sure, “talk nice to the judge” but “just say no.”

Posted by: magic_duck | September 5, 2007, 9:04 am 9:04 am

Most of us have been in toilet stalls. How does one peep at someone in the next stall, policeman or otherwise, without either a drill or a periscope? Just curious – don’t really want to know – “I am not gay.”

Posted by: magic_duck | September 5, 2007, 9:13 am 9:13 am

OMG!!!! The last time I heard it was OK to be gay…or is that only true to further a political agenda? Why are we, as a people, fighting for gay-rights when we, as a people, crucify a person whom may or may not actually BE gay? Shouldn’t this whole thing with politics and politicians actually be about their record, their history of how this person does his/her job that he/she was elected for, and not their sexual orientation? The government condons homosexuality and then destroys any person whom may be gay. Come on folks, try some forgiveness and let’s move on….the gas prices certainly have!!

Larry peered through the crack at the stall door (the officer noted his blue eyes) and then entered the adjacent stall. The tape and a transcript of it are widely available on the net including at ABC News. Mr. Craig and his family evidently wish to keep the discussion alive. Apparently Senator Larry Craig is considering reversing his guilty plea and fighting charges that he was trying to pick up men the restrooms for gay sex. But Larry’s story just doesn’t add up. For example, I’m 51 years old and been using the Men’s room for a long time. Never in my life did my foot ever come close to touching the foot of the guy in the next stall. That just doesn’t naturally happen. Then if Larry has a “wide stance” – if I had my legs so far apart that my foot was touching the guy in the next stall, I wouldn’t be able to get my pants down. As Judge Judy would say, “If is doesn’t make sense, it isn’t true.”

Senator Craig should have some decency and resign. He looks like an idiot resigning and then looking into

Stand up Craig and tell ‘cut and run’ McCain where to go! If it were up to him, democrats would rule anyway since he’d demand the resignations of everyone who J-walked in DC! No thought or consideration – everyone just resign! You did nothing wrong!

Ever notice that Republicans NEVER admit to doing anything wrong, no matter how vile or obvious. He knew what he was accused of, was aware it COULD reach the public, and said he was guilty under oath. Now, they all say, GO LARRY, YOU DID NUTTIN’WRONG!Go Larry, and take the Republican Party with you!

Can someone please look into what flight he got off, what flight he was transferring to, and where in relation all of that the bathroom was? If he had to go out of his way to go to an “infamous” restroom I guess that would answer all the questions wouldn’t it?
