Oprah Weighs In

The decision by the all-powerful Oprah Winfrey to endorse Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, must confuse a number of females who otherwise would support Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY.

Thankfully, The Onion headline about Oprah seceding from the U.S. and forming an independent nation of cheesecake-eating housewives called "Ugogirl"  (LINK) has not yet transpired, lest I would be out a wife and likely a daughter.  ("Ugogirl is a nurturing, supportive republic with attitude and sass.")

But what to make of the endorsement of the woman who can create a best-seller with one breath?

The Sun-Times reports that Ms. Winfrey has not actually voted in a Democratic primary since 1988 (LINK)…

But that doesn’t at all lessen the impact of her Santa Barbara fundraiser for Obama this weekend…

And picture the TV ad!

"Hi, I’m Lord and savior Orpah Winfrey. I am normally above the fray when it comes to politics — but this year is different…."

What are your ad copy suggestions?

(Speaking of ads, if you’re not watching AMC’s sublime "Mad Men" (LINK) you are missing out on the best new TV show since the debut of "Lost." It is awesome.)

Good for Oprah. She said she is friends with Obama and really trusts his judgement. As an Oprah fan and Oprah T.V. Show watcher, her support makes me want to support Obama even more.
Oprah will be very influential in the upcoming Presidential election. And I think that’s a good thing!

TV personalities need to stay out of politics, for they know no more then anyone else.

Oprah is hardly a song-and-dance act. She has class. Her opinions are part of her success. So, more power to her for making an endorsement, and opening herself up to the inevitable barbs from Letterman, Leno, Jake, etc. I heard the other day that a couple of unions endorsed Edwards. Now let’s see what Edwards and Obama do with the endorsements. When you get a big endorsement you’re no longer the unknown underdog–it comes with great expectations. Now then–who’s going to step up and justify their endorsements??

Her endorsement did nothing for Kerry!

If people are actually influenced by and vote solely according to Oprah’s endorsement, I fear that we will see unspeakable destruction and devastation the likes of which the world has never known before. Not due to the endorsement itself, but due to the massive earthquakes caused by the Founding Fathers turning over in their graves.
