News’ Tahman Bradley and Christine Byun Report: Former Sen. Fred Thompson R-Tenn., will try to steal the show from his rivals for the ’08 Republican presidential nomination by introducing his presidential campaign in a television advertisement set to air Wednesday night during a Republican presidential debate in New Hampshire. Thompson will be absent from the debate.
In addition to the television ad, Thompson plans to make an appearance on NBC’s "Tonight Show with Jay Leno".
Imagery is everything for the former lawmaker turned actor, his campaign obviously aimed for a commercial that seemed befitting of a statesman — Thompson speaks in a simple room with a window and an American flag.
"Today, as before, the fate of millions across the world depends upon the unity and the resolve of the American people," he says. "We can’t allow ourselves to become a weaker, less prosperous and more divided nation."
Words on the screen in the 30 second ad’s final shot may reveal Thompson campaign theme: Security, Unity, Prosperity.
"One of this campaign’s greatest strengths is Fred’s ability to connect on a one on one basis with voters …these ads play to that strength and help to build our network in advance of his first trips to the early primary states as a candidate," Campaign Manager Bill Lacy said of the first ad and a slightly different one scheduled to begin airing Thursday in a statement.
Thompson will continue his announcement rollout with a video on his new website — Fred08.com — Thursday morning at 12:01 am ET. He then takes his campaign to Iowa for remarks at the Polk County Convention Complex early Thursday afternoon.
