Thompson’s Hollywood Homecoming
ABC News Christine Byun Reports: The town of Lawrenceburg threw a Hollywood homecoming for Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson, former Tennessee senator and "Law & Order" actor.
Thompson, who currently lives in McLean, Virginia, grew up in Lawrenceburg, a town about 90 miles outside of Nashville. More than five thousand people
– which included self-proclaimed "Frednecks" and "Fredheads" –
filled the town square to hear their "Freddie" speak. Country singer John Rich (of Big & Rich) entertained the throngs of supporters and dedicated a cover song of Johnny Cash’s "Walk the Line" to Thompson, because "they’re both classic American men and the kind of guys you follow to the top."
Amidst much fanfare, the candidate and his extended family rolled up in black SUVs, their entrance projected onto two big screens. His 87 year-old mother, Ruth, still lives in Tennessee and proudly waved to the crowds.
Musing "every 30 feet, there’s a memory," Thompson recounted memories of his hometown, including after-school snacks at his grandparents’ café and his first case as a country lawyer. He also spoke lovingly of his late father and daughter, who passed away in 2002 — parts of his personal life he rarely ever discusses.
"I also judge a home by where your loved ones are buried. The best daddy a boy could have and a wonderful daughter are laid to rest here," Thompson said.
In honor of Lawrenceburg’s favorite son, a small shop called "Thompson’s Station" has opened, selling t-shirts, stickers and sewing kits emblazoned with "Fred08."

Obama Backs Off Birth Control Battle?
I’m very disappointed in Thompson. I’d thought he was a social conservative, but it turns out he’s not. Instead, he is a libertarian on social issues, like Ron Paul and Barry Goldwater (Goldwater hated the Christian right and often said so in the media).
Thompson, it turns out, is against a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. He’s also against one banning abortion, as well as being against one allowing Prayer in school. All three of these are key issues to many social conservatives, and Thompson is against all of them. No wonder so many social conservative leaders have withdrawn their expected support of him.
Also, Thompson is ducking the Values Voters debate this coming Monday in Florida. The debate is put on by and aimed at social conservatives. Thompson is ducking the debate because he doesn’t want his libertarian views on these issues to become widely known amongst social conservative voters.
He’s hiding what he is.

The choices for president are all in the running now. The perfect candidate does not exist. Never has. As voters we simply support the candidate we agree with the most, or disagree with the least. Fred Thompson is the best of the lot. Huckabee and Paul are not elect-able. Giuliani is a disgrace and McCain a disappointment. Hillary et al are totally unpalatable and really are pretty much interchangeable with Giuliani and McCain. Thompson is a few light years ahead of whoever is in second place. Unless someone better jumps in fast, Thompson has my vote.
