Brownback Low on Money in the Bank

ABC News’ Julia Bain Reports: Republican presidential hopeful Sam Brownback faces dwindling cash on hand at the close of the third quarter, according to numbers released by the Federal Election Commission. The Senator from Kansas raised just over $925,000 in the third quarter, but was left with less than $100,000 on hand at the close of the reporting period on September 30.

The campaign has issued a release emphasizing the grass roots nature of campaign, and a month of August focused on the straw poll in Ames in lieu of fundraising. According to campaign spokesman John Rankin, "With a crowded field and an entire month during which Senator Brownback campaigned in Iowa without holding fundraising events, we are pleased with the level of support for Senator Brownback’s message." The campaign stressed that they are elgible for $2.1 million in matching federal funds, and that they continue to carry no debt. According to the statement issued by Rankin, " We have always expected to run a grassroots campaign and to make the most of limited resources."

In total the campaign has raised just over $4.2 million dollars, incuding a $575,000 transfer from his Senate campaign account. The campaign reported $94,653 in cash on hand to the FEC at the close of this quarter, down from the $447,764 at the close of the second quarter on June 30th..
