Civil Rights Leader Endorses Clinton
ABC News’ Eloise Harper Reports: Congressman John Lewis, D-Ga., has endorsed Senator Hillary Clinton for president.
"I have looked at all the candidates, and I believe that Hillary Clinton is the best prepared to lead this country at a time when we are in desperate need of strong leadership," Lewis said in a statement released by the campaign. "She will restore a greater sense of community in America, and reclaim our standing in the world."
For months, Lewis has refused to say who he supported in the race. Both Senator Clinton and Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., have reached out to Lewis, a prominent civil rights leader.
Most recently the Congressman and both Senators were together in Selma, Alabama together this past March.
Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton reacted to the announcement, saying, "Barack Obama has great admiration for John Lewis and understands his long relationship with Bill Clinton. He looks forward to his support when Barack Obama is the nominee."
Lewis who is the son of sharecroppers, came to fame during a non-violent civil rights march from Selma to Montgomery in 1961 during which Lewis was beaten by police.
Lewis represents Georgia’s 5th District, which includes part of Atlanta, and has run unopposed since 2002.
Clinton will receive the endorsement in her first public appearance in Atlanta, a city where Senator Obama has received much support from the African American community.
The 12:00 p.m. ET announcement will take place at Paschal’s restaurant, a famous establishment that former President Bill Clinton visited in 1996 in his run for the presidency.

Obama Backs Off Birth Control Battle?
John Lewis has given up the high ground on this endorsement; because Mr. Lewis was Obama many years ago being a black man runing in Ga. in the early days when there where only a few blacks in Congress. We as black people around the country were pulling for him to win; and to see him not support one of the smartest black man of our time. This one of our greatest oppertunity I’ve seen in my life time for a black man to become president of these United States; this is very sad that we want support better qualified canidate Obama! It’s the Bill factor for Lewis that turns the coin over!

Yet another Democratic error. This party just seems to make mistake after mistake when they try to line up behind a winner. They have lost 3 in a row and with Clinton they will make it 4 in a row. If the party base had its finger on the pulse of America, it would rally behind Obama. Nice try, Dems, get ready for another 4 (or 8) of the next GOP prez.

Rep. John Lewis is intelligent enough to know that Hillary Clinton is well deserving to be President than Barack Obama. You lost again Obama!!!!!

this endorsement from lewis to HILLARY,has nothing to do with the fact that one is black and the other white. At a time,we need to be realistic and serious with ourselves.Obama is an intelligent and smart guy;but not ready yet to become the next prez of this country .Not because he is black, all black should blindly give their support to him. What do we then do with our judgement? DON’t you see that she is the most qualified of all of them? This is a race between republican and democrats not white and black
