Clinton Defends Marriage, Lauds ‘Romantic’ Prez

ABC News’ Eloise Harper Reports: In an interview with Essence Magazine, Hillary Clinton discusses her marriage to the former president.

"Oh, he’s so romantic," says the former first lady, "He’s always bringing me back things from his trips."

Clinton also made rare remarks on the former (and aspiring) first couple’s marital troubles.

"Now, obviously we’ve had challenges as everybody in the world knows," she told Essence. "But I never doubted that it was a marriage worth investing in even in the midst of those challenges, and I’m really happy that I made that decision."

Mrs. Clinton pointed out the Chanel watch made of white cubes Mr. Clinton bought her because it reminded him of teeth — and she was having dental surgery at the time. (ABC News’ Green Room Girl points out that this is likely the J12 – putting this gift in the range of $4,200 to $11,950 depending on whether or not Clinton sprung for diamond markers or the bezel).

Candidate Clinton also told the mag that her proudest moment is Chelsea and that her favorite show is "Grey’s Anatomy".

The interview appears in the November issue of Essence Magazine and tackles Clinton’s fight for the black vote in a Democratic field that includes Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill.

“Bill’s always bringing me back things from his trips”.
Ya think he would do a better job of hiding his black book of phone numbers .

This is the kind of in-depth news story we get from a corrupt media. ABCnews leading the way to get the Hil elected. What a fluff piece. Almost as bad as NBCnews. Keep it up, those of us shorting NY times (NYSE: NYT) and Tribune (TRB) are making lots of money. ABC-anyone but Clinton, but Not obama

wow, the clinton haters are still at it… and they probably still support the most unethical, lying, cruel, immoral, criminal president we have ever had… but then again, most right wing fundamentalist christians are obvious hypocrites too…

The degree to which each of these two use each other reaches a new high, each and everyday. I agree with dean o: this is such a fluff piece that it screams pro-Hillary.

I always chuckle when the “better than thou” come on with their snide comments. I’m sure they are all as white as the new fallen snow (not!). In my marriage, both my husband and I had indiscretions which we NEVER would have believed either of us could do. Yet at the time and under the circumstances, we made what were bad choices, much like the one Bill Clinton made (and millions more if the truth be known) and we endure the consequences which were light compared to what the Clintons had to endure. I applaud Hillary for her tenacity and I have no doubt it made their marriage stronger in the long run. Bill Clinton puts George Bush to shame in who is the best president. When Hillary is President, with Bill behind her, hopefully we can get this country back on course. Bush’s “stay the course” had almost totally devastated this country, our hope, our children and everything decent. Bush doesn’t care about getting “special attention” such as Bill but he certainly cares about his and his friends $$$$$$$$$. To save America…vote HILLARY IN 2008!

I doubt if anyone really believes that the only motivation for this nonsense is the campaign. You should be able to ask the Arkansas State Police detail that protected Bill when he was Gov about some of their ‘romantic’ relationships. Between her cussing like a sailor and throwing things at him one would not conclude that much love existed between these two.

Posted by: Gary | October 23, 2007, 12:46 pm 12:46 pm

I find the reflexive ‘Hillary-devil’ comments both amusing and baffling. The degree of antipathy expressed is often so visceral. I just can’t see this level of hate. Not a big Hillary fan, but I think she’d do OK; couldn’t be worse than GWB and that crowd, and I wouldn’t mind having Bill back around (sinner and all, who am I to judge – as though I have no skeletons). They’re both bright, serious, and if their default mode is ambition, it isn’t the ambition to concentrate power and wealth even more in the 1% of the country that already has 40% of it.

funny how the clinton haters are probably right wingers who worship marriage, yet condemm their relationship… personally, i could care less what goes on in their personal lives, as long as their leadership skills are good…

Posted by: earthnotflat | October 23, 2007, 12:53 pm 12:53 pm

It is unbelievable how many people think that they know the Clinton’s personally. They’ve had problems but that doesn’t mean that they don’t love each other and aren’t romantic with each other.——I’ll take Clinton any day over this last bumbling, idiot of a president.—-How odd that so many republicans can be so judgemental. They’re probably out doing somebody right now, it’s just not PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE.

Posted by: Judy | October 23, 2007, 12:57 pm 12:57 pm

All of you who think that you really know the Clintons are probably not from Arkansas. We had them up to our chins before most of you even heard of them. There is nothing romantic or noble about them. They live a life totally different from the view that the press want you to see. It’s really sad but you really can fool most of the people most of the time.

Posted by: Gary | October 23, 2007, 1:04 pm 1:04 pm

I don’t remember the last time there was a presidential candidate on the ballot in November that I really wanted to vote for. Looks like the same this year. Dems you are right: Bush is a bumbling idiot. Reps you are right: Hillary is a she-devil.
So who the heck am I supposed to vote for this time? Picking between Bush and Gore and Bush and Kerry was like picking between poison ivy and poison oak. How can the two parties do such a horrible job of sending forth nominees on such a consistent basis?
Having been born when LBJ was in office, there is no question that Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were the two best presidents of my lifetime. One republican and one democrat. The partisan nonsense has to stop because neither party is better than the other at providing quality nominees for president. Nobody is right all the time, which is why I am an independent.
Now, for the love of God, please give me somebody decent to vote for next November.

You know, if Hillary had left Bill 9 years ago, she would have been villified by the haters for giving up on her “sacred” marriage vows. (Hmm, like McCain & Giuliani have — multiple times). But instead she chose to stick it out. Married men cheat, their wives forgive them. It happens every day in America. Judge not lest ye be judged.

I can’t believe that most of you are still willing to believe this tripe! OK, so you think Georgy is a liar and Billary isn’t… think about it, GW did what he did because he thought it was best for our country.

Posted by: Citizen | October 23, 2007, 1:11 pm 1:11 pm

I have no use for the Clintons but I do not advocate divorce. That solves no problem. However, I don’t believe she stayed with him for such noble reasons but rather for pragmatic political reasons. She knows that she can’t make it on her own becoming President without him.

Posted by: Gary | October 23, 2007, 1:16 pm 1:16 pm

I’d rather have a president lie about their person affairs than lie to get us into a war. But I guess many of those on this board can’t see the difference.
Well, I guess we can relate more to the hurt that would happen if we have a spouse that is unfaithful. And lying about a war is just print in a newspaper or monitor or words on the TV. Harder to personally relate to.
And besides, most of you who are critical don’t realize that a passionate man is every womans dream and because of that, he will be given many opertunities. I think Hillary realizes what she’s got.
Let’s just say I can relate to Bill.

He’s sooooo romantic!
Hardy-har-har
Isn’t that what Monica Lewinsky and
Gennifer Flowers said as well?
Hillary is a fool and has no moral qualifications to run for President.
(But then again, neither does George Bush!)

… But it doesn’t mean that as a guy you have to act on those opportunities…. But I do appreciate the attention. Great for the self-esteem.

Posted by: Roy | October 23, 2007, 1:27 pm 1:27 pm

Wendy: You’re absolutely right. She stayed with him despite the fact that he’s a philandering, unfaithful, scumbag of a husband. But, she didn’t do it out of love for him or the relationship. She did to stay politically viable. Their conversation has to be that he owes her one when it’s her turn to seek the WH. He agrees in order that she doesn’t damage his seeking for a legacy. For the record: I don’t midn ambition. In fact, I respect anyone who is ambitious. Where I draw the line, however, is when that ambition is at the expense of the people she claims to serve. There is no politician out there (either left or right) who is not self-centered. Once they get into office, they said they’ve arrived at heaven on earth. It’s a joke for them to say they want to be public servants. Instead, we end up serving them and at the end of the day, we have to say “thank you” to them. Judy: You’re right – I don’t know the Clintons personally, and thank God I don’t because from what I already know about them is enough for me to want to throw up. To know them personally might actually cost me my life!

I just have to say, this country was together for about a month or so and it was the most wonderful thing to see and be part of. 911 brought us together and 911 took us apart. But for the last 7 years, we as americans have made money spent money bought 2nd homes and lived a good life. Now you all want to tear apart the country, and bad mounth gwb, and any other person in office. Well guess what we put them thier and we have had a good life for 7 years. The war is somthing else and most of us have know clue about it so don’t judge, its war, and if we new everything that was going on it would’nt be war.
One last thing, this country is all about money and who can make the most. From o.b to h.c so she can raise the most money and we our suppose to say well vote for her are vote foe him because they raise the most money. BS
A short story about money that most of you can understand. A toyota dealer in the LA area sold a car to a customer a mistake was made on the part of this dealer in the customers favor, So this dealership called the customer up and told him they made a bad mistake and would he bring back the car. Well the reason for this story is money. the public can be taken advanage of but a large corp and I mean the biggest toyota dealer in LA can over charge you and bost about it, but call you up to get back thier product to save a lose. This is what goverment is, make money on what ever they can but take away from you if they give to much.
A Real American

Posted by: No to Hillary in 2008 | October 23, 2007, 2:42 pm 2:42 pm

Bill: I don’t know that I would classify Hillary as a pushover. She’s “standing by her man” because there’s something in it for her. As I said, many things can be said about Hillary including cunning, clever, calculating, devious, strategic, but pushover is not. I think about the feminists who criticized her for using him to get to the top – perhaps that’s the only time I had ever agreed with the feminists!

I lost all respect for her when Bill was caught with Monica. Like so many women in this country, she takes a beating (physically and mentally) and goes back for more. How can you trust someone that doesn’t stand up for what is right? I can see us getting invaded when she is President, oh, thats OK, we have to forgive them. BS, get rid of her before she becomes a problem for all of US.

If the leader of a country other than the US ignored the United Nations, lied about intel to invade a country, set up a prison in gitmo to “detain” people and deprive them of civil rights, approved various torture techniques as valid methods of “extracting information”, created illegal prisons throughout Europe, and authorized the killing of all those people in Iraq (plus being responsible for almost 4000 American deaths), he would be apprehended and put on trial for war crimes.

Posted by: dgfiit | October 23, 2007, 3:11 pm 3:11 pm

The problem with her candidacy is that we don’t end up discussing policies or the problems of the 21st century. We end up arguing about the marriage. Further, this article points to the problem with the campaign season. The journalist don’t provide substance. I recognize that they are on the campaign trail and take the stump speeches and policy proposals for granted, but the citizens need that information to make a decision. I am an avid reader of Essence and the article was well done, but you can’t tell from the fluff we have been provided. It doesn’t even meet the standard of an elementary level summary.

Sure he brings her back something from his trips. He will be literaly “paying” for his “indiscretions” for the rest of his life. (and we all know how fond Hillary is of money and material things. ie: “white water”.) I have no conflict saying that GWB is by far the WORST president in history but I will NOT make that an excuse to vote for the likes of such a “manipulator” as Hillary. I am all for a female in office, I just do NOT TRUST HER! I am NOT going to choose who I vote for along party lines either. To vote for someone just because of what “party” they belong to is just plain “stupid”. So, Hill can continue to be the “martyr” wife who is a “saint” for keeping her marriage together and Bill can be the forever “contrite” husband always putting forth the extra effort to show what a “good guy” he really is and all’s right with the world. (Dang, would make a good movie, ya think? Pure fantasy.)

Ya know, just another thought, the state of Mr. & Mrs. Clinton’s marriage should have NOTHING to do with her ability or lack thereof to govern our country. Contrary to some previous posts, there is no “selfrighteous” judgement about “infidelity” even going to enter my mind at the polls. Although,my own personal opinion of Hillary will be. I still say she will use anything and everything to her advantage. Her “goal” is to go down in history as the first “woman” president.(and she and Bill will also be known as the first “couple” to serve as persident) Big deal! She is a user, manipulator, egotistical, materialistic, female unspayed dog, regardless of the condition of her marriage. Have no doubt that whatever it is she does it is for one reason and only one reason. To benefit Hillary and obtain her own agenda.

We already know of some others that think he is romantic. Just think of the gossip when/if he becomes the First-Man of the White House. Will he get to select the staff? No problem… some great men like Jefferson enjoyed the perks of power. Hillary won’t be getting distracted so often by his urges. Her concentration will be enhanced.

Nor will they buy the story that you love the “man”. Get a life.

Funny how people are so polarized about Hillary and Bill Clinton. It’s sorta like the super bowl. The MEDIA gets the public hyped up about it, and the public goes along with it. If your team isn’t at the super bowl, why do you care?
So why is everyone so against Hillary? Because the media and these comments make them feel ‘part of something’ by being so filled with hate.
Shouldn’t you be pissed off at the cable company, the phone company, the restaurant that screwed up your order or the trash man for running over your garbage cans?
I can’t think of a single thing that Hillary or Bill did that has pissed me off. I don’t agree with 100% of what ANY politician may have to say, but then I don’t agree with 100% of what any PERSON may have to say either.
As far as the infidelity issue, you people must be in denial. Over 53% of the American people end up in divorce at least once in their lifetimes – the highest in the country. So the ‘holier-than-thous’ out there dont’ have the majority vote on this issue.
I think it’s time for a woman to run the country. We’ve had 8 years of failure at a cost to the taxpayer – time to improve the UNITED STATES.

Oh my God. Are we supposed to believe that repeatedly being cheated on by your husband is romantic? Does anybody have a mouth wide enough to swallow this BS?
Did you Democrats hear the news about Stephen Colbert? Here’s the article in case you didn’t.
In the Democratic primary, Colbert takes 2.3 percent of the vote — good for fifth, finishing ahead of Gov. Bill Richardson (2.1 percent), Rep. Dennis Kucinich (2.1 percent) and former Sen. Mike Gravel(less than 1 percent).
So Colbert, a comedian, places fifth among Democratic voters.
If you didn’t hear about this poll, perhaps you saw footage of the Bill Maher (live) show Friday night.
911 Truth people infiltrated Bill Maher’s live audience last night and disrupted his show to the degree that he felt he had to go out in the audience and help his security people push one of the hecklers out.
BOTH OF THESE EXAMPLES ARE JUST THE MOST RECENT (FURTHER) PROOF THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY GALVANIZES THE CRAZIEST AND STUPIDIST PEOPLE THIS COUNTRY HAS TO OFFER. PERSONALLY, I’D BE EMBARRASSED TO BE A DEMOCRAT.

roland said “Please Hillary will win and you right wing morons will have no one but Bush to blame!” What does President Bush have to do with Hillary winning? Everyone should be looking at each candidate on their own merits – what President Bush has or hasn’t done is totally irrelevant when looking at the candidates. Everyone should be looking at what EACH candidate stands for & then deciding which of those beliefs you can live with. Personally, I can’t vote for someone with such socialist leanings – so that knocks her out – but almost everyone else can still win my vote, dependent on what I continue to learn about them.

roland said “No one caught Bill in any Bathroom at an airport or e mailing underage interns who happen to be the same sex as him” – No – he just got caught with an intern having oral sex in the oval office.

Hillary Clinton could never be able to get the consensus in Congress to get anything done. And ask yourself, what has she accomplished successfully in her political career to help the American people?
Plus, Hillary Clinton is NOT electable as a Presidential candidate, her voting base is way too thin. She can not win the primary.
And she has the blood of our American soldiers on her hands, she voted to send the troops to Iraq.
The main stream media has it all wrong! Barack Obama is winning the race for the Presidency.
The FACTS:
1. He has raised more money so far than any other Presidential candidate in history.
2. He is bringing in huge crowds. Just yesterday 9,500 people were rooting him on in Boston! His crowds are larger than all the other candidates.
3. He has the largest and most organized grassroots campaign.
4. He has the broadest range of supporters among all the candidates. He is loved by Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and people of all races and ages!
5. His supporters are extremely loyal and dedicated to making sure he is elected.
Also, the media and those so called polls have it all wrong about Blacks. Most Blacks ARE supporting Barack Obama.

for those who claim to not be interested in the clinton’s personal lives sure jumped on this article. it seems for every clinton hater there is a fanatical clinton defender waiting to pounce on the non-believers. well i am interested but not so much the political aspect, just the drama – hehehe. anyway personal lives aside, bush is a goof-ball true enough but hillary seems to want to socialize everything. if you think that is getting on the right track please move to europe or someplace where individualism isn’t valued much and leave me and this country alone. ditto to torn in iowa btw.

where do you think dems get their campaign money? playing the lottery? from rich people. hillary has the most campaign donations out of all of the candidates, try thinking before commenting

“nobody died when clinton lied” honestly I just want a dem in office, I’ll take anyone, but it would be great for a woman to actually be in office. A woman with 8 yrs prior experience as a very active and very educated first lady- maybe Obama would be her VP???

I cannot believe how hateful people get when adding their comment. God said we must not judge. I know, we had our fill of the marriage problems of the Clintons, and George couldn’t shine his fathers shoes, but please lets try to just focus on the canidates and their qualifications if they have any.

I agree completely ‘Torn in Iowa’.
Visceral personal attacks away from the focus of leadership ability and in light of true the true incompetency we’ve experienced (some of YOUR faults, people that never learn), is just plain stupid.
I say this with as little animosity as possible, and with brotherly love: please take your heads out of your %$&%$ and think intelligently. Our lives, our way of life, our economy, our children all depend on us not being fools to another Bush. Many of us just fear the country will be so dumb sometime in our lifetimes to allow another Bush to con us. He’s been uncomparable to anything this nation has ever seen; how could you hate the Clinton’s so much in the glaring light of this.
