Confederate Flag? Where?

The Rev. Al Sharpton has just issued a statement criticizing Vice President Dick Cheney since it has been reported to him "by media" that the Vice President’s hunting trip Monday is being conducted at the Clove Valley Rod & Gun Club in Union Vale, New York, where, Sharpton alleges, "there is a Confederate Flag hanging at the club."

I do not know this to be true.

In fact, it seems fairly clear that Rev. Sharpton does not know this to be true.

A friend of mine who has been hunting there insists he never saw such a flag hanging there.

Over at the White House, ABC News’ Martha Raddatz reports that Lee Anne McBride from the Vice President’s office says that no one in the Vice President’s party saw a confederate flag, or was aware there was one.

"Until this issue was raised by the press, we were not even aware of this," McBride says. The VP’s office cannot confirm whether in fact there IS a flag at the club.

Nonetheless, Sharpton says he’s "calling on Vice President Cheney to leave immediately and denounce the club and apologize for going to a club that represents lynching, hate, and murder to black people."

That is a big jump from hearing gossip about a club to asserting that the club represents all sorts of hateful criminality.

I just called the club to get a response … no one answered; I left a message.

"In this age of Jena and hangmen nooses all over the country, for the Vice President to relax under the flag of the hangmen nooses is an unpardonable insult to all Americans, particularly Blacks," Sharpton goes on.

"He ought to leave immediately, call for the flag to be brought down at once, and apologize for being connected to an institution that would be insensitive enough to fly it in the first place."

Sharpton goes on to threaten that if the Vice President doesn’t leave the club, he "will bring a delegation of clergy to lead a prayer vigil in the immediate future."

Forgive me for asking this … but does this seem rash at all to anyone?

– jpt

UPDATE: The Sharpton team e-mails me to tell me that both the NY Post and NY Daily News will have photos of the flag that they are breaking tomorrow. I look forward to learning more. Where was the flag hanging? Whose flag is it? It’s a potentially very ugly story… but these kinds of stories call for measured responses — and facts — from everyone.

When is it going to end…all these so called Revs. want to do is stir up the pot and try to create an atmosphere of hatred. If there was a flag of the confederacy flown at this hunting facility…let them show proof positive. A picture of the flag either fluying from a pole or hung on a wall would sure help their cause..even though they and many others have misconstrued the actual reason for the civil war and the symbolism of the battle flag of the confederacy. It is truly a shame that these people must resort to such tactics as to proclaim that the symbol of the confederacy was displayed, without proof positive…this goes for the media too

Is this all that Rev. Sharpton have to do with his day? Has he been in the club to see this flag? Hey Al, when you can get a picture of you holding this flag INSIDE the club, post it somewhere on the web and let me know. Maybe I’ll spend a couple of minutes between 3 and 4am to look and ponder what kind of idiot you really are.

Get over yourself Sharpton! If you would stop keeping the African American race down by constantly reminding them of the fact that their ancestors were slaves, then I think that some of them might just go out and better themselves instead of feeling like they should always live off of the government. I am so tired of crap like this. Holding prayer vigils just because someone has a flag hanging on the wall is dumb. Maybe me and some of my white friends will hold a vigil just because you are still using that “Poor me, my ancestors were slaves” excuse. I’m tired of it. Listen to Bill Cosby for once.

Why doesn’t Sharpton just shut his big fat mouth? Who cares what he thinks about things like this? He’s a hateful race-baiting neanderthal. He is his community’s worst enemy and isn’t doing anything except strain race relations. He has too much time on his hands. Hey, the Confederate Flag was part of our history, so deal with it; it didn’t just represent slavery. Fact: Over 50k whites died during the Civil War to give the black slave their freedom, slavery which was first introduced to white Europeans by African tribal leaders who thrived off of enslaving their own people and who continue doing this. Why doesn’t Sharpton go after African slave holders? Or work on the problem of illiteracy in his own back yard? Or do something about illiteracy and poverty in Africa? Do something productive ole’ rev, instead of trying to make everything a racial and oppressive thing for you and your folk.

OK wait… this is a story about what Al Sharpton, Dick Cheney, and the friggin’ REPORTER don’t even know to be true? Why exactly is this a story? Slow news day? What happened to — I don’t know — INVESTIGATING a story before publishing it? Maybe a bit of fact checking or something? Are you guys even trying anymore?

Dick is a publicly elected official (they even got some african American votes) and if you affiliate yourself with a place that displays a flag thats has racist conoctations, then you should be ashamed and especially when your own cousin is BLACK (Barack)! Thank you Al Sharpton…..thank you, thank you, thank you. I really appreciate a bold leader such as Mr. Sharpton. We live in a nation where there is freedom of speech. Has any of you fellows who do not agree with Sharpton’s tactic forget about “Freedom of Speech.” He is absolutely within reason to bring attention to one of the most hateful symbols in world history. I view the confederate flag and the nazi symbol as “kissing cousins” of death and destruction. As ridiculous as this may be concerning the VP, can you imagine that the state of South Carolina, Columbia to be specific, still hangs that dirty flag on the state house grounds? When will this nation rise up and repent? When will we as a nation remove that flag? When will that big nasty confederate flag come down from near Interstate 40 between Knoxville Nashville…….Just further down the road into Memphis is where Dr. Martin King, Jr. was assasinated……The flag is a symbol of hate towards people of color….Plain and simple. Why can’t people of good will ban it? Why? And we will continue to keep the struggle going strong until righteousness prevail……..The confederate flag all over American must go now……We are united under one flag with each state having its perspective state flag…..No more room for the confederate devil flag…..

Oh, for Pete’s sake! Blacks are murdering blacks by the hundreds in cities like Philadelphia, and the best that Al Sharpton can do is run around looking for Confederate flags! He would rather run his mouth and cry racist at white people instead of doing anything constructive for his people.

Why doesn’t the cowardly Cheney take his weapons over to Iraq and show how much of a man he really is (or isn’t). No, he would rather kill things that can’t shoot back. He’ll let our young sons do the fighting for him and
the criminal Bush. They both
should be court-martialed
and given the ultimate punishment.
Bush’s environmental record alone
is enough to impeach the S.O.B..
Both are pure SCUM!

You speak as if people of color are not a part of you……Who are you, bud? Do you not belong to the race of humans? Black people and White people are basically the same……believe that? We are all family, buddy….You did not know that? What affect Blacks should affect Whites…..What affect Whites should affect Blacks? Don’t you think? Injustice and hatred anywhere, is a threat to justice and love everywhere……You like that? Hey dudes: the Confederate Flag should no longer fly across America…..And Winn Dixie should stop putting up new groceries stores in the South—or at least change the name…..Dixie lost….remember? They did not win. The Yankees won the Civil War…..So, Winn Dixie and the Confederate Dixie Flag should go away……..

There are a lot more folks who can help put out other fires…..Look how many fire fighters fighting those fires in Cali……So, Robbie, since you recognize the senseless killings in Philly, why don’t you go there and help save some of your Black brothers and sisters? You do love Black folks, right? We are all interconnected…..So, I suggest you let Al do what he’s doing, and you go to Philly and help put out the fire there…..Okay?

The “good”, and I use quotation marks around the good, rev. has so much spare time, and is constantly searching that will allow him to receive some free space in papers and on the news. He does need to get a job. He stirs up racism where there is none. I don’t know if the man is evil or loves the attention. I know that he is intelligent. I’ve listened to him on talk shows many times. If he had an image, he is making it a negative one.

And to top it all off it is a story about something that Sharpton, Cheney and the reporter have yet to find out the truth about! Hooray for the news! Where have all the freakin’ honorable journalists gone?

Just like Al Sharpton has his right and freedom to speak his mind on this issue, so does people have the right and freedom to display the confederate flag. It is a symbol of history, bad or good, it is still a part of this country. We have to learn from these mistakes so we don’t repeat them.

I can name 3 times just off the top of my head where Sharpton has publicly disgraced himself by prematurely embracing false information before all the facts came in:
1. The Tawana Brawley hoax in 1987
2. The Crystal Gail Mangum Duke Lacrosse hoax in 2006
3. The Jena 6 “whites only” tree that never existed and also turned out to be just a hoax in 2007.
He’s now courting number 4.
Yes, Jake, it does seem rash to say the least. You’d think he’d have hired his own fact checking swat team by now but nope. If i didn’t know any better, I might think that Sharpton’s intentional mission in life is to conjure racism out of thin air.
But I’ll hold my judgement about this confederate flag deal until all the facts come in. See?!?! See, Al ?!?!? That’s how it’s done – not the other way around!

The only racist i see here is al sharpton. He keeps his job by keeping racism alive. Pointing fingers at something he doesnt even know is the truth and demanding an apology for a baltant attemt to stir racism between blacks and whites in america. I am white and have suffered multiple racist remarks. HOW? Cracker is a racist term but im called cracker when a african american doesnt like me. I have many black friends and none of them never bring race into any conversation we have. I hate racist whites and blacks. To the confederate flag issue, its every persons right to beleive what they want. Its called the first ammendment. If we didnt have this then the cival rights movement would have been much harder to accomplish.

Whether someone has a confederate flag or not is no body’s business but the members. Al Sharpton can take his yankee butt back to New York and leave us to mind our own business. The originator of the Tawanna Braley matter should mind his own back yard.

This is just another full fledged crock of “The Other Way Prejudice” perpetrated by the UnRevNotSoSharpTON.
Frankly, I have lived through all of these Afro-Huckster’s years of hustle and it’s time WE THE PEOPLE, of ALL colors, unite in several ways to reject these phony claims of alleged racism, just because someone has a HISTORICAL flag up in their building.
That means NOTHING. A load of history is attached to those years. Not everyone that is associated with that flag is a racist. VERY FEW ARE. But anything these frauds can come up with to hustle some money for their filthy hands they will do. And, we also MUST stop them in their tracks. That flag does NOT mean racism. That flag represented a mass of people who were wrong but NOT racists. They lost a war. They blended back in. But racism has nothing to do with you and me but EVERYTHING to do with the Jacksons and the NotSoSharpTONS, the immoral hustlers in the world. Now THERE you have something to take down. I will do everything in my power to take down – legally and morally – these self-serving frauds. Will you?
I’m ordering a Confederate flag tomorrow (or maybe tonight) to do my part of IN YOUR FRAUDULENT FACE, all you bums.
Will you join me?

Yes. It seems rash. But if you have a problem it, or “those people”, you ought to be damn happy they’re flying their colors so you know they are. It’s better when you can identify the opposition. However, if I were African-American, I’d be more worked up about having Al Sharpton as a spokesperson for my people. He’s a total goof to most white folks. That’s no B.S. But I suspect most readers know and agree.

Posted by: Chase | October 29, 2007, 8:07 pm 8:07 pm

First of all – who told Rev. Al he was even relevant? Second of all – just because you don’t care to remember the past does not mean it did not happen. Thirdly – the Civil War was NOT about slavery. Fourth – that IS NOT the Confederate Flag.
The Civil War was about state sovereignty and the flag that everyone commonly refers to as the Confederate Flag is in fact Jeb Stuart’s battle flag. If you are going to compalin about history, maybe you should learn it first.

He still has yet to apologize to the man he accused of rape..NEVER APOLOGIZED for ruining his life…he is just looking for things to divide and NEVER does he talk about the good things that unite us. He should drop the act..He is the problem not the solution. We have had our fill of intolerant jackasses and we are sick of it. As a black man, African American or person of color?(whatever is the new norm) –He does not represent me or my friends. He is just a big mouthed fake preacher.

First, those who say the Nazi flag and the stars and bars are “kissing cousins” need to go back to school and take a couple of history classes. The Nazi regime killed SCORES more jewish people than the civil war ever did. Hitler was a manipulative mass murder who loved propaganda. The southern states were fighting for over more than just slavery. Also, Hilter was wanted to create an Arian nation. Did the southern states try to do that? Did they try to eliminate an entire group of people? If someone can connect the dots for me between the Nazi flag and the stars and bars, please, by all means. Yes, the south was fill of oppression and slavery, but so was the north. But to compair the Nazi regime to the condfederate army? Please…

Posted by: Slow news day? | October 29, 2007, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm

I, too, called the gun club. At one number, I got a guy who said he didn’t know what everyone was talking about, and hung up. He sounded like he was sick and tired of phone calls about it. At another number, I got a more helpful fellow who had been there a number of years, and told me he had never seen a Confederate flag there. He didn’t sound defensive–he sounded believable. So there you have it. I must confess, the only reason I called was the Al Sharpton connection. I’m afraid that when he says something now, I’m dubious, and want to find out for myself. There IS alot of racism left in the country, and we should work to end it–but, uh, Al is getting to be part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Typical dumb yankee comparing the stars and bars to the nazi flag. This is the dope that set up the Tawana Brawley con job and was responsible for the murder of an Hisidic Jew in Brooklyn. This race bater better stay away for some boys that I know that don’t take kindly to carpet baggers coming down here and insulting our heritage and that which we hold dear.

Posted by: Gary | October 29, 2007, 8:35 pm 8:35 pm

So what? If a Condederate Flag fies, it IS part of our heritage. Many Americans have ancestors that foulght in the Civil War and we hold those people just as dear to the American spirit as anyone else. Sharpton is a race baiter and everyone knows it. ps – The Civil War is over. Will someone tell Sharpton!!!

Posted by: Gary | October 29, 2007, 9:18 pm 9:18 pm

This is a big one. I don’t think Al Sharpton would risk himself by making up a story like this. Let’s see how this plays out because this could have serious implications. Al Sharpton did say he was going to plan a March on Washington, D.C., is this a way for Washington D.C. so say “bring it on!”. I am speculating. I will keep you updated! If that is so, would this be considered incitement by the Government????? I am confused.
Al Sharpton seems to be stepping up his game. He should have run for President again this year. Too bad, when you are running for President you can’t say too much, so it is interesting to see how his rhetoric is different from someone who is supposedly running for the Black vote.

Sharpton is an attention-wh0re. He should be working to improve the black community instead of constantly ousting and berating people for “offensive” stuff… compared to the crap that went on 40 years ago, the stuff going on today is NOTHING. The Black community needs strong leaders who stand up for issues, work for improvement from within, and don’t constantly victimize the community against white people.

Tony, you and Al Sharpton deserve each other. You are both so racist that you are malodorous! Why is it wrong to display the Confederate flag, but still okay to fly an African flag??? Why can you shout “Black power!”, have Miss Black America, have a United Negro College Fund, have BET television, but they are not allowed the same with the name in an all ‘WHITE’ category? You, Al Sharpton, and Jesse Jackson are not struggling for equality. You want to be the ‘MOST EQUAL’!

I fly the BEAUTIFUL CONFERERATE STARS AND BARS FLAG every single day right next to the STARS AND STRIPES and if simple minded AL and his buddies don’t like it….THEN LUMP IT…..I could care less..I just might fly two of them now side by side..

Al and Jessie, I refuse to call either one of you Rev..that is a scam.
Race issues is all you know, Both of you cause the problems. Why not just come out and say you hate any race but your own.
Civil War is the longest in history, because you two will not let it go.
Get over it, get Jobs, quit scamming funding.

Why is Cheney allowed to hunt to begin with? He almost blasted a friend of his to smithereens a few years back. The only flag you need around Cheney is the white flag or surrender. Get this man a new hobby!

Posted by: DuckIt'sCheney | October 30, 2007, 12:21 am 12:21 am

I just looked at the photo of the flag and the associated text and wonder if the picture is as accurate as the text. It is hanging on what certainly appears to be a standard door, which means it would be about 30″ wide, yet it is described as being 3′by 5′ in size. No matter how you measure, if that is a standard door there is no way the flag is that big.
Since they got that important detail wrong I have to wonder what else they got wrong. The actual location of the building where the flag was seen, maybe? One bad “fact” in a story such as this casts a great deal of doubt on the entire thing.

Posted by: Walker Evans | October 30, 2007, 12:21 am 12:21 am

Why is it always an issue of black and white? Why can’t they get over it? Why do whites think they are superior and black think they are persecuted?
Maybe Dick and Al do deserve each other–they are both racists.

Posted by: swissdiver | October 30, 2007, 12:35 am 12:35 am

Wow. Who cares? We should. Step back and read what you all have written. Are you not embarrassed? You should be. So “they” should get over it? And who are you? The last lynching of a black man in the USA was in 1980. Not that long ago. Al Sharpton may be a politician, but would you be so vitriolic in your criticism if he weren’t black? Do you really believe discrimination isn’t alive (and represented by the confederate flag) today? are you that niave’?

can’t wait to see if this pans out to be true… of course i would bet money that it IS true… and if it is true, i wonder if JAKE TRAPPER will still say it is rash… let’s face it, the confederate flag is a negative symbol for good reasons, and if it’s being hung in a hunting camp, the vice president needs to admit it… and then state his opinion about that… frankly, i think people have the right in this country to be bigots or to hate others if they so choose, but on the same token, elected officials have to fess up if they are associated with these symbols and people who support those symbols… and one more thing… if this pans out to be true, i challenge JAKE TRAPPER (or any true journalist) to find out how many black people are members of this club…

Posted by: earthnotflat | October 30, 2007, 1:07 am 1:07 am

Well there is no need for blacks and whites to try to convince one another on ongoing racists acts or systems. There is plenty of evidence for and against the argument. Plenty. What is more immediately urgent is for blacks to learn to better position themselves within the U.S. political economy. Afterwards, all other issues will take care of themselves. When blacks freely dump hundreds of billions into the domestic economy while owning less than 7% of non-agriculture businesses, they are asking for trouble. And trouble is just what they have found. That kind of fiscal incompetence is far worse than the damage racism could ever cause. To be an annual 800 billion dollar collective consumer with little to show for in the form of production, significant employment, and thus educational, social and political power, why bother worrying about how other groups behave or think? The central issue is black fiscal and social conduct that leaves them vulnerable to many forms of unpleasant experience. Black problems can be sorted out by blacks themselves if they insist on not following leadership, including from that of MLK to Obama who avoid the central issues of wealth-creation that leads to political significance and prosperity. The name of the game in America is not a moral-based notion of holding hands in a promised land. That is simply not the case. It can happen, but that should not be the primary guiding principle if all groups are not truly committed. The name of the American Dream game is MONEY. Those that have it are respected while those that don’t will perish at a faster rate. Money allows one to realize the promise of freedom and so the central focus should be on how to control the black portion of the contribution to the political economy just as other groups maintain their control on their contributions. This is reasonable and it is a serious notion of self-help. Who the hell cares what Dick is doing or where he hunts? Who cares what stupid deeds a racist might be up to? Neither has a real bearing on the quality of my life if I don’t want him to, and that is a fact. The black man should first and foremost mind his personal social and fiscal conduct. Only from a position of real strength will a truly great experience emerge. Just give it a try.

Schools I’ve visit in many countries see Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson as reasons that racism exists and America. When will America wake up and banish these two individuals that justify their existence by fanning the embers of racism into raging ‘spin’fernos?

Ok, I saw the photo. But now I cannot find the story where the poster said it was. It was there and went back to check some fatcs about it and now it is gone. I have a feeling there is a reason for that and Rev. Sharpton was baited hook line and sinker. However, it is easy to catch a fish when they swim in a fish bowl.

I am sorry but this race thing has gone to far. I have seen the marchs of King and the others. We have given into the black communty and they do nothing in return. We have created jobs and affirmative action to now a white man can’t get a job. I tell you they still want more and more. The problem is so much has been given that now people are starting to fight back which is not good for the nation as a whole. Stop crying and whining Sharpton you are the one creating the problem suck it up and be a man if you want to be my equal earnit and act it.

al and jesse continue to fool a great number of white people (and a few blacks) as evidenced by some of the comments here. blacks — or any group — maintaining a victim status (long after it’s called for) give themselves great leverage on any issue in the public eye. don’t think they’re not smart enough to know that. whites need to get past their own stupidity and so-called white guilt and see these scam artists for that they are and start calling them on it. john stoussel, sean hannity, neal boortz, thomas sowell and a few others in the media have done so. the rest of you remain cowards, even jake tapper here, tiptoeing around the real issue. the media is the main culprit here, especially the three majors and npr/pbs. once they start doing their job and either ignoring or confronting these media whores/race baiters then we may be able to work on some meaningful problems together, including real issues and causes of racism. these people, like al and jesse, not to mention lesser weights such as joseph lowery and cynthia mckinney, are divisive. they do not bring us together. and many many good black people know this and see the damage their “leaders” are causing. even obama, who seemed to be on a higher level than these scamsters, has shown he has flaws with some of his recent comments. start ignoring these self-promoting con men – they’ve all been caught with their pants down, figuratively, and in some cases literally, but the media continues to give them a free ride.

This is what is racially wrong in the US. Glame throwers who want the minorities to blame others for the failure of their communities to straighten out their problems. Racism only exist because of cultural behavoir not color of skin. Change the culture, change racial attitudes-that simple.

Hopefully some people will take more time to read, get educated about the Confederate Flag and set aside their personal prejudices and bigotry before putting their foot in your mouth.
This article is a good example of how shallow some people can be. You’d think they would want their kids go get a full education in 2007.

Many people died for that flag. It has NOTHING to do with color. Al Sharpton is the biggest racist on the planet and a glory seeker. Give it up loser and get a real job.

The flag looks like it is posted on a standard door on a storage shed (not the 3 foot by 5 foot flag as mentioned in the news story). So, Dick Cheney is supposed to know what someone has hung in a storage shed at a club that he has probably rarely, if ever, visited? I don’t think that is realistic. Why doesn’t the press force Al to at least apologize to the innocent Durham Three that he tried to imprison instead of giving him yet another forum to call attention to himself?

Hey Jeff
The “Confederate Flag” is an American flag and millions of Americans revere it. Of course, millions of Americans don’t care much for it either….Now tell me, where is it written that the first group which holds it dear, must surrender its rights to those who don’t? I’m waiting for some talking head like yourself to offer a logical explanation as to why this is so? So far, none of you pious pontificators have come through with that explanation. In fact, all I get from y’all is SILENCE! Are you going to join your fellow journalists and hide under your desk? I await your insights – but I won’t hold my breath.
And as far as “further investigation” goes, here’s some food for your “further investigation”
“Apologize”? Is he kidding? Steven Pagones, the family of Yankel Rosenblum, the Central Park Jogger, and many more – they’re all waiting for apologies for from sleazy Al and his team…. None seem forthcoming however. Why don’t you and your fellow talking heads in the media put the pressure on him to apologize, I wonder?
Oh yeah, one more thing for you to investigate – since he claims to be a “Reverend, maybe you can do some research and find out where he got his degree in theology? Or does he have one at all?
And where oh where is his CONGREGATION? Maybe someone should put a group
picture of a bunch of people on the side of a milk carton with the caption underneath
MISSING! HAVE YOU SEEN AL SHARPTON’S CONGREGATION???
You want to investigate? I’d say you have a lot of work in front of you

On the day racism no longer exists, people like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will be out of business, why do you think they keep fanning the flames?..job security…

This has gotten way out of hand. It’s almost 2008 and we’re still focusing on a flag that is, although very contraversial, the Mississippi state flag. To attack the vice president for being in the the same vicinity as the flag is unneccesary and a pathetic attempt to obtain publicity. No black man or woman I am friends with is or ever has been a slave. Furthermore, none of them feel they need any apology or any kind of compensation for their ancestors terrible treatment and racial discrimination in the past. The truth is that racism is very alive today, but, as a resident of the state of Mississippi, I find nothing wrong with the state flag. I do not flaunt it, as I realize some overly sensitive people may be offended, but I don’t find any error in being around one. You won’t solve the crime of racism by picking apart every aspect of a man who is obviously not a racist man.

So many of these posters have it exactly right. The media does a very good job of ignoring much of what a lot of decent, real Americans would like to see covered on the news.
Why not begin to ignore these jesse and al germs? Simple as that!
The Confederate Battle Flag represents more than Southern Heritage. It represents honour, courage, valour, nobility, fidelity to the loftier imaginations and aspirations of man, ideals that come only from God. It represents the sort of characteristics that we both expect and demand from our warriors who are in the armed forces of these united States of America.
Deo Vindice!

The confederate flag isn’t only about racism, but also treason. Anyone connected to this flag should be charged with conspiracy to overthrow the government and more.

Associated Press – October 28, 2007 3:24 PM ET
HAVANA (AP) – Abraham Lincoln alongside Che Guevara? Cuban leader Fidel Castro linked the two today in a newspaper column ridiculing American calls for democratic change in Cuba.
Castro praised Lincoln for abolishing slavery in the United States. He wrote that the Civil War president was “anchored to the just idea that all citizens are born free and equal.”
___________________________________________
Americans today also are not aware that Abraham Lincoln was a correspondent of Karl Marx, the so called father of Bolshevik Communism which explains the brutal military revolution that was perpetrated by Abraham Lincoln against the Confederacy of our Founding Fathers in 1861. The letters to Lincoln from Karl Marx have been discovered in an old trunk in an attic of an old house close to the White House. It is important to note that Slavery was never the real issue. At the time of our Founding Fathers slavery existed throughout the world as it did in the American Colonies, including white bond servants. At the time of Lincoln, slavery existed in the North as well as the South. Also, it is interesting that the after the Red armies of the Bolshevik Communists conquered Russia they called their new communist government the “UNION of Soviet Socialist Republics”.

I fly the Flag on a daily basis as I am proud of my Southern Heritage. I will not be pressured by scum like Sharpton to remove it. My family has been in the country since 1608 and fought many battles to make this country what it used to be, not what it has become today. If he and his people are unhappy here then I suggest he leave. He is not nor will he ever be welcome in or near my property.
GOD SAVE THE SOUTH

Posted by: Joseph E. Fleming | October 30, 2007, 10:15 pm 10:15 pm

The Confederate battle flag is no more racist than American flag. What if the war and the flag never came into exsistance? How much longer would al and his people been enslaved? Had the Southern States not fought for their states rights, how long would slavery been legal in the United States? There is no telling. So it seems to me, that al and his people were freed because of the Confederate Flag far more than the American Flag. al and his race cronies should emancipate themselves from mental slavery! They are the only ones that can free their minds.

Posted by: Mike Davis | October 30, 2007, 11:14 pm 11:14 pm

Al Sharpton needs to just shut up..I’m a proud Texan and Southerner. My family has lived in the South ever since they landed in Virginia so many years ago. I proudly display the Confederate Battle Flag in honor of my heritage and ancestors who fought for Dixie. They weren’t fighting for slavery. They were fighting for the same principals as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patric Henry etc. They fought for States Rights, less taxs, and less government. That is something we have way too much of, and it is true that the real America died at Appamattix. The Confederate flag represents them and everything that used to be right in our land. It is true that hate groups have miss-used our flag for their purposes, but they have and do also use the U.S. flag which in my opinion has more to do with racism if you want to start throwing mud. It flew over all slave ships and legalized slavery, it flew over the illegal invasion of the South. It flew over all the cruelty that was thrust upon all Southerners black and white. Over all the plundering, burning, killing, and raping of Southern people, and it flew over all the oppresion of the American indians, so in all reality ole Al should be hateing on the U.S. flag and leave ours alone. He’s the biggest racist in this country.

Posted by: Wes | October 31, 2007, 3:42 pm 3:42 pm

If the story is true the VP should be ashamed because he represents the United States of America, not the Confederate States. I don’t think it’s racist, but it is treason. If the Union had lost I doubt if we would be allowed to raise the flag of the United States of America. The confederate flag represents southern states, while the Unites States flag is inclusive of all the states of America. You can have your history, but some history should not be happily displayed in public. As for racism, they are racist who fought for the union and some who fought for the confederacy. If you recognize that some people are offended please don’t tell them to get over it, explain why they shouldn’t be, that is, if you care about their feelings.

Does one draw a parellel..??..//..Al Sharpton truly has a queer nose for news..considering he espouses the Lord as his Savior I truly find the man lacking in both Hindsight and 20/20 vision as a regualr demaeanor..instead he has chosen the absurd white-race as his Calling Card for right&wrong..I have found many things to ignore just being a single person and attempting to make my way home..Al Sharpton never seems to fall into my scope of right&wrong..so I get the reasoning in my head that Drugs and Prostitution are NOT on the Al Sharpton…urge to purge–revolution..and his sense of PURPLE really make me laugh anyway.

Where the hell was Sharpton when Hillary took campaign contributions from a man that claimed black people are inferior to whites?
Where was he when Roger Clinton was caught on tape saying the “N Word” over and over again? (search Roger Clinton tapes)
All this proves is that Sharpton really doesn’t care about racism. All he cares about it politics. He can point fingers at Republicans but when a Democrat steps up to the racist plate, he is nowhere to be found. He is a hypocrite and just causes more problems for black people by stirring up more racism. He doesn’t want racism to die because then he would be a nothing and have to get a normal job like everyone else, black or white!

My 14 year old son came home from school today quite upset. His teacher pretty much called him a racist because he wears a hat with the confederate flag on it. When he explained to her that is hat has nothing to do with racism, she started comparing the confederate flag to the nazi flag. What is the deal with our teachers today? My son is proud to wear the flag just as he is with the american flag. People need to sit down and read their history and quit being a biggot.
