Edwards Talks About Urgency in his Campaign

ABC News’ Raelyn Johnson Reports: John Edwards always starts his town hall meetings telling supporters his wife Elizabeth is doing well.

But today in Iowa he found himself explaining that the urgency in his campaign was less to do with his wife’s battle against incurable and rather, more about leaving a lasting impression on the country.

In front of a crowd in Shenandoah, Edwards recalled a moment when he was asked by a reporter if he feels a sense of urgency to get things done given the challenges his family faces in light of Elizabeth’s health.

"My answer was, what are we waiting for," recalled Edwards. "I believe that we have a responsibility to leave this country better for our children, not worse."

Edwards, father of 25 year old Cate, 9 year old Emma Claire and 7 year old Jack added, "What worries me is I think we’re at a place in this country’s history where we might be the first generation that doesn’t leave the country better."
