McCain Weighs in on Rudy v. Romney

ABC News’ Bret Hovell Reports:  Presidential hopeful Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., went on Bill Bennett’s show "Morning in America" Wednesday, and tried to thrust himself into the middle of the taxes/line item veto discussion sparked at Tuesday’s GOP debate.

McCain, who is in favor of the line item veto, said that it can be constitutional.

"I guarantee you, Bill, the line item veto should be and can be constitutional," McCain said, in an audio excerpt of the program released by the campaign which can be heard by clicking here. "It was written wrong, it’s not that the concept was wrong."

And he called it "disturbing" that fellow candidate Rudolph Giuliani went to court to defeat the line item veto.

"I’m very disturbed at Mayor Giuliani’s claim that he’ll bring fiscal discipline and yet is adamantly opposed to one of the major tools that 43 governors use and is willing to go to court, to the United States Supreme Court, to deprive the president of the United States of that valuable tool," McCain said.

McCain also offered "a little straight talk" in accusing Giuliani and Romney both of raising taxes during their respective tenures.

"And if you want to call them fees or you want to call them bananas, the fact is they’re still tax increases when the consumer and the constituent has to pay additional monies into government coffers," McCain said.
