Obama Raises $19 Million in Q3

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller Reports: Sen. Barack Obama D-Ill., has raised $19 million in primary dollars and at least $1 million in general election funds in the third quarter, bringing his total for the year to nearly $80 million.

Obama’s total raised July through September was less than the campaign raised in the previous two quarters.

The campaign reports over 93,000 new donors, bringing the total donors up to 352,000. This would be a dropout from the first two quarters of the year: the Obama campaign had more than 100,000 donors in the first quarter, and reported more than 154, 000 new donors in the second.

In an email, Obama’s national finance chair Penny Pritzker thanked supporters:

Pritzker said, "Thanks to the unprecedented grassroots support, the Obama campaign will have the resources we need to win the nomination and the White House."

Campaign manager David Plouffe had upbeat expectations about the primaries, following the third quarter financial reporting: "Many in Washington have spent the last weeks declaring that outcome of this race to be pre-ordained, and the primary process a mere formality…yet, in this quarter alone, 93,000 more Americans joined our campaign, because they desire real change and believe Barack Obama is the one candidate who can deliver it."

Plouffe continued, "This grassroots movement for change will not be deterred by Washington conventional wisdom because in many ways it is built to challenge it."

I don’t get this Obama thing at all. I’m a very progressive Democrat, have longed all my life to be inspired by a political leader, would love to see a qualified minority elected President, yet Barak Obama does less than nothing for me. Scant platitudes uninspiringly delivered. Give me a break. The vast majority of Americans aren’t going to play along with this Democratic delusion in a general election, particularly after the Republicans brutally, bluntly but truthfully depict it as a nothing candidate.

He is up a creek without good advisers. He keeps making mistakes and it is showing in the polls. He is not in touch with America. He needs experience and a dose of reality.

Well, if you don’t get it, then your not paying attention. Obama is a breath of intelligent, ethical fresh air. The best way to loose the 08 election is to ordain Hillary and drive all the wing nuts and even moderates like myself to the polls against her. It would be ABC all over again. She would truly be more of the same, where Obama is the only one with the brains and integrity to make the desparately needed changes required to re-unite the US, and regain our standing in the world. The GOP can’t wait for Hillary to get the nom because they know that if Obama gets the nod, it’s well and truly over for them. Watch closely, they are doing everything they can to depict as a nothing candidate, to be sure. But the reason is because they know that they can’t beat him.

actually, he’s ahead of Clinton by 8 points in Iowa, and that’s the only place that counts right now.

Obama’s raising $80 Mil. must be a record in presidential fundraising. Too bad that Hillary’s a shoe-in with the likes of President Clinton backer her.

I suspect those who say “they don’t get” Obama are people who are diehard Clinton supporters, and probably Clinton staffers. Anyone else would at least have to admit to his fresh appeal as a leader with charisma and intelligence and integrity. That should be obvious to even Clinton’s most loyal and best-paid staffers.

The winner take all team is actually GORE-OBAMA and would I like to see the clinton camp watch that emerge. But the ladies have ordained the obvious and 2008 is the year of the woman. Too bad Pelosi had no guts for the job or she should have been our first woman President and serve out the term of the failed PRECEDENT sans cheeny.

It would be great if Al Gore run for President, but I dont think he will, and if he does it might be too late.
I was initially wary of Obama and more pro Edwards, but Obama’s pledge for sentencing reform gives me hope that we would move more towards a more humanitarian sentencing policy.

Mr. Obama should negotiate a run as Vice President under Hillary, get some good experience, and run for President in eight years. He just doesn’t have the experience in the battles of Washington that he needs to be elected now. The establishment would render him impotent immediately. Hillary has been tested, and retested and bounces back every time.

Is winning the nod from the Democratic party about who raises the most money?
I could care less about how much money any of them raise…talk about a waste…how much better that money could be spent on all the issues that candidates claim to be concerned about!

Posted by: sazkat | October 1, 2007, 4:50 pm 4:50 pm

HOW DID B.O. GET 80 MIL? HOW DID HE COME OUT OF NOWHERE? HE’S A REPUBLICAN’S DREAM CANDIDATE, HE’LL NEVER WIN IN A GENERAL ELECTION AND THEY KNOW IT, HE’S THEIR BEST SHOT FOR ANOTHER REPUBLICAN AS PRESIDENT, GOD HELP US ALL. HE HAS NO SUBSTANCE, NO LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE, NOTHING. BUT NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE IDIOCRATIC PROCESS OF ELECTING A PRESIDENT IN THE U.S IGNORANCE AND GREED, A PERFECT STORM A PERFECT FORMULA FOR LEAPING FROM THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRE IN 2008.

I admittedly support Hillary over Obama. And I admittedly also don’t “get” the Obama thing. He is simply not qualified to hold the position. Yes, he would be different, Washington outsider, yadda yadda. That’s what George W. Bush portrayed himself as and look where it got us. You don’t hire someone right out of college to be CEO of a fortune 500 company and you don’t elect someone with as little experience as Obama to hold the highest office in the land. Barack Obama is not qualified and it’s only the fear of being labeled a bigot that keeps people from saying what is obvious. If Obama were not black he would not be getting the attention that he is. I say this comfortably, as I do not care if someone is white, black or purple, male or female or gender neutral. They simply must be qualified.

Obama a breath of fresh air? The guy voted no more than 2 months ago to spend another 180 billion to keep us in the war and he lacks the moral fortitude to do even half of what Ron Paul will do!!! RON PAUL FOR PRESIDENT!!!!

Posted by: Jeremy | October 1, 2007, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm

Talk about “Inexperience”…. What experience did Arnold Swarzenagger and Jesse Ventura have in politics to be elected to the highest state position? No one questioned that! I personally think he would do a better job than that one in the White House now.

Yeah lets have Clinton again, then after that we can get Jeb Bush in there and then after hes done Chelsea will be ready to go. As we do this lets all jump around like Apes and remember that we have opposable thumbs and are so much more evolved than they are.
Ooooo-ooo Eeeee–eee Aaaaaa -aaaa!
Apes for Clinton!

I like the comments people are making. Glad to see that we are thinking more than we did in 2000 and ’04. I do not believe that experieince is key here. And if it were, I’m not sure that Hillary’s years of experience “bouncing back” from domestic political assisination qualifies her to any greater degree that B.O. In 2000, Bush promised to “restore honor and dignity to the White House”. He lied. Obama has all the integrity needed to succeed. And allow me one more comment – one that no one seems to bring up. I think the part of the world that hates us has greater repsect for a man of color than they do for any woman. There, I said it.

I’m not saying he isn’t qualified, but our country is not ready for a black president. He should really get on the ticket as VP and go from there. Maybe after 4 or 8 years, we will realize that race should not be a factor, and we should vote for the BEST qualified candidate – black, white, or female!!!

Posted by: don | October 1, 2007, 5:46 pm 5:46 pm

That reminds me – Hilary as president???? Someone is dreaming!!! Please Al Gore – now is the time to announce you are running for president. You will have no trouble beating up on anyone who decides to run against you!!!

Posted by: don | October 1, 2007, 5:48 pm 5:48 pm

Mr. Obama is a fantastic human being. All you haters — what can you do? What have YOU done to make a difference in your community and the world.
Stop throwing stones and give Mr. Obama praise for running and trying to make a difference in the lives of millions of people, in America and around the world.
We can’t have establishment candidates running all the time: like the Bushs and the Clintons.
Open your eyes and enjoy the blessing that God has bestowed upon us. Vote for Barack Obama, give him a chance. If you are not happy after 4 years of him, then elect a new president.
Give my Obama a chance. Give American democracy a chance. Help Obama change the world! We need your support.

Stop saying America is not ready for a Black president — that is crazy. I know a lot of Americans can be shallow, but most of us are looking for the QUALITIES in a president that Barack Obama gives us. Stop being a victim of the media machine and the cynicsm that exist out there. Opens your eyes — you will see the truth. Vote Obama — he can win.

Posted by: Andrea Taylor | October 1, 2007, 5:57 pm 5:57 pm

I think Barack and Hillary would both make Presidents that I would be proud to have sitting in the Oval Office. I’m no longer proud of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. We cannot afford another “compassionate conservative” (who is neither compassionate nor conservative) again.

Posted by: Martha S | October 1, 2007, 6:00 pm 6:00 pm

Don: Just out of curiosity… are you sure it isn’t YOU who aren’t ready for a black President? The country seems ready for just about anything. Maybe I am wrong, but they seem to be everywhere else in government and doing quite well. Personally I don’t care what race or gender wins the Presidency, as long as we get rid of the current trash.

Posted by: Troy Street | October 1, 2007, 6:16 pm 6:16 pm

I would take a calculating Hillary, an inexperienced Obama, an over-coifed Edwards, a Hispanic Richardson, an elfish Kucinich or a fat Al Gore over any of the current GOP crop.

Posted by: Eric Schuurman | October 1, 2007, 6:33 pm 6:33 pm

The GOP top runners or at least that’s what there called, won’t go to any African American or Hispanic meetings. I think it would be a giant kick in the pants if Obama wins the Presidency, makes Richardson his VP and makes Hillary the head of Homeland Security. My God the GOPERS would all be wetting their pants. HAR HAR HAR

This experience thing that I am hearing so much about.. I consider the bunch on Capital Hill NICOMPOOPS! I will take inexperience, honesty, fresh ideas and enthusiam any day!!

Posted by: lakeaustinman | October 1, 2007, 7:10 pm 7:10 pm

How can we possibly vote for Obama. HE IS NOT SURE IF HE CAN BRING THE TROOPS BACK BY 2013!!! We hear a “different” kind of politics from the Obama Campaign. The only different kind I see is Ludacris rapping in the background while him giving a speech. Don’t be voting for him because he is a minority or a face with a different color…vote because of the things he stands up for. He is still very inexperienced. We don’t need different kind of politics…we need a person who is ANTI-WAR!!!
RON PAUL 2008!

Posted by: Aziz | October 1, 2007, 7:14 pm 7:14 pm

So if America is not ready for Barack, have we ever been prepared for George and Dick??

Posted by: lakeaustinman | October 1, 2007, 7:26 pm 7:26 pm

The only smart democrat running right now is Joe Biden. Listen to what he says. He’s got the experience and the know how to bring this country back together. Get off this love affair with Obama, Clinton and Edwards and use your brain before you lose it to dumbness!

Posted by: Bob | October 1, 2007, 7:46 pm 7:46 pm

There is no doubt that Hilary Clinton appears confident and capable when she is interviewed or in the debates. Barack Obama does no come across as a man of solid, experienced beliefs. I don’t think he would do well as president. I think he should do as has already been suggested on this site and be VP for a few years first. Doubt if he would get the attention he does if he was white.

Posted by: gordon jackson | October 1, 2007, 7:48 pm 7:48 pm

If this had been a Republican story, the headline would have been all about the influence of big money on elections!! And before you say “wel, he gets money from lots of small donors”, that’s just how Hillary gets her money, from big money doners like Hsu who make donations on “behalf” of other’s, so you can’t trace the money. But feel free to turn the blind eye, and the MSM will help cover up any evidence!!

Posted by: Retired_subsailor | October 1, 2007, 8:01 pm 8:01 pm

“the Obama campaign will have the resources we need to win the nomination and the White House.” See, Obama see’s money as the only requirement to “Buy” the White House…like MediaMatters said, this is “their election, they bought it!!”. Ability, experiance, even truth, not required. He’s learned to change his tune to the audience…Bring the troops home, no, I can’t promise to bring the troops home, if elected, I will bring the troops home…He’s learned the politics of being two faced pretty quickly!!

Posted by: Retired_subsailor | October 1, 2007, 8:04 pm 8:04 pm

I don’t think money can buy the nomination or the presidency … and I don’t think Ombama has any more charisma than the other candidates. And I am tired of him saying he didn’t vote for the war in Iraq … of course not, because he couldn’t and he wasn’t given the same information as the other candidates who did. I don’t like his comparing apples to oranges … and I think it makes him look weak.

Posted by: Hank | October 1, 2007, 8:44 pm 8:44 pm

many see obama as being inexperienced. i see him as new and fresh. All the older candidates may have more experience, but he has energy and a willingness to pursue change. that and the younger a candidate is, the less chance hes had to make alliances with special interest groups that make life harder for the rest of us like bush and the oil industry

Posted by: matt | October 1, 2007, 8:53 pm 8:53 pm

Yet another positive story about Barack Obama turned into a negative by the Clinton lovers at ABC news. This is really getting rediculous. You people should be ashamed.

Posted by: bob | October 1, 2007, 8:55 pm 8:55 pm

Sorry Hank. I didn’t realize you were so sensitive about Obama.

Posted by: Greg | October 1, 2007, 9:08 pm 9:08 pm

Obama represents a fresh new start. He is the next JFK. His is a visionary. He didn’t vote for the war. He connects with people of all kinds everywhere. We need him. He gives me hope.

Posted by: Bill | October 1, 2007, 9:22 pm 9:22 pm

Newsflash: America is becoming less white every day. White males are becoming the minority in the workplace. Obama represents our modern day society much better than does a white boy born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

Posted by: Angie | October 1, 2007, 9:24 pm 9:24 pm

What is Obama? A darn change for Washington that is what. Can the democrats imagine the nation united under Hillary. You must be crazy, she is totally incapable of governing and uniting America. At least Obama is not a Washington tainted politician as of yet. My personal pref. is Biden of the dems but at least Obama does not have all that baggage from the past that Hillary has. America will not survive with her as President and maybe that is what the extreme left really wants.

Posted by: rockychance | October 1, 2007, 9:34 pm 9:34 pm

I agree that Obama is a breath of fresh air. Yeah Hillary may have some more “Experience,” but however you interpret that, it doesn’t mean she is good at what she does. I personally don’t think she would be a good leader and of the speeches I have heard from her, all they focused on were ragging on Bush and pointing out our problems and giving no concrete solutions. The two things going for her are her name and the state of the current presidency and possibly that a lot of women are voting for her just because she is female (I am not at all against a female president, just Hillary. if Pelosi ran, I would vote for her in a heartbeat). Even though Hillary has these things going for her, if she is elected, how much will be going for us? Obama is a true voice of the people and his experience comes from his good heart and ability to passionately lead, which overcomes a well known name and number of years experience any day.

BO is the man capable to lead America. As US President, will be well represnted (half white/half black). Fantastic representation
He’s the man for 2008.
