Romney Aide Cleared in N.H. Investigation

ABC News’ Matt Stuart Reports: Kelly Ayotte, Attorney General of New Hampshire has closed the investigation into charges that former Romney aide Jay Garrity illegally ran a reporter’s license plate, with no charges filed.

In a press release on the New Hampshire Department of Justice website, the Attorney General’s office announced that "the investigation revealed no evidence that, during the relevant period of time, anyone had queried the registration records for the vehicle that the reporter was most likely driving. "

The investigation stems from a complaint following a report in the New York Times in which reporter Mark Leibovich wrote that while he was following former Gov. Mitt Romney’s car as the Republican presidential candidate was campaigning in New Hampshire, Leibovich was "led to the shoulder and instructed to ‘veer off’ by a man wearing an ear piece who emerged from Mr. Romney’s car." 

The man, later identified as Romney aide Jay Garrity, reportedly told Leibovich that he had run his license plates.

Garrity resigned from the campaign in July. He still is being investigated on allegations of impersonating a police officer in Massachusetts.

However the Attorney General’s office ultimately concluded that "no queries had been run on that license plate" and determined that "no crime was committed with respect to Garrity’s encounter with Leibovich."
