Gov. Bill Richardson Does Playboy

ABC News’ Sarah Amos Reports: In an interview with Playboy magazine, Democratic presidential candidate Gov. Bill Richardson, D-N.M., reveals details about his bad-boy side: the cursing, the cigar-smoking, and his struggle to lose weight.

"Yeah, I swear. Yeah, I smoke a cigar occasionally. Yeah, I make mistakes. The American people should know who I am," Richardson said in the December issue of Playboy magazine.

Richardson also rejected news media reports calling him a "second-tier" candidate.

"You target your efforts and resources in the two most important states in the race, Iowa and New Hampshire. People there aren’t swayed by the smarty-pants set in Washington and New York," Richardson said.

The New Mexico Governor also talked about the influence President Bill Clinton — his former boss, and ’08 rival’s husband — on his campaign style.

"There’s a little bit of Bill Clinton in me," he said.

Determined to say above the fray as the Democratic nomination contest heats up, Richardson said, "I will never go negative. I will never attack them personally. I will, however, emphasize my advantage over senators Clinton and Obama."

Richardson said that unlike Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., he wants all troops out of Iraq immediately including residual troops.

"The first week I’m president I would take on three issues, and we would have to come up with solutions—bipartisan solutions. One is Iraq. We’ve got to get out. The second is our $9 trillion deficit. Third is Social Security and Medicare," he said.

Today former Chrysler Corp. Chairman Lee Iacocca has endorsed Governor Bill Richardson – says Governor Bill Richardson is his pick for president, citing the governor’s foreign relations background and energy policy. Calls Governor Richardson a “legendary problem-solver,” also stated, “I think experience counts and so does character. And after the last seven years, that’s the kind of president we need right now.” Lee Iacocca is a great American and great minds do think alike, so no surprise here that he has endorsed Governor Richardson. No matter what happens in 2008 or who is elected to President, Bill Richardson has already made a difference in America for the best.

If this passes for values and religion among the Democrats, then, count me out.

Thank you Richardson. Just gave me enough resopns why I shouldn’t consider him. Yeah, if he swears, engages Playboy, he’s definitely got a bit of Will in him. Just what we need–NOT.

One more reason why I can’t stand this guy and I’m ashamed that he is the governor of my state. He’s making himself look like an idiot. And he’s not doing his job here. Ever since he decided to run (which was preceeded by several months of him stating that he would NOT run), do you know how many days he has actually been in his NM office, doing his duties? ONE. One single day doing the duties that the people of NM have been paying him for since he announced his run for President. His plan for pulling us out of Iraq immediately is absurd. He needs to re-think this strategy if he wants to make it to the White House. As it stands, I did not vote for him when he ran for Governor, and I will not vote for him for President.

His personal life should be irrelevant when it comes to his political life. What really count are his qualifications and experience. Obviously his character say a lot about his determination and what he will do in office. The important thing is that he can do his job, and what he is proposing make sense. Get us out of that stupid war that is killing Americans and bankupting our economy.

we have no candidates with enough intellect, conviction, and reslience to perform well as president.
everyone on the ticket, republican and democrat, is just incompetent.
I am sorry this nation has so few choices to lead and to preside.
I think I’ll hibernate for another for years beginning in 2009.

Let’s see – Richardson has been UN Envoy, Congressman, Congress staffer and
Governor of NM. At the request of
Democratic and Republican Presidents
he has represented the US at difficult
international forums; negotiated the
release of our military from NK;
negotiated better treatment for refugees
in the Sudan. He has been married to the
same lady for over 40 years and raised
some great kids.
He admits to personal faults because he
is human.
If NM wants to trade us Richardson
for Perry, you have a deal.

If there’s any credible evidence – I mean credible evidence, not paranoid accusations – concerning Mr. Richardson’s involvement in drug running, I’m sure we’d all be intensely interested in seeing it.

ah, the first sign of an actress on the down side of their fifteen minutes is an apperance in playboy. Must apply to politicians also.

Richardson is a jack*** on his best days. He has done nothing good for NM and what little good has come while he is in office he takes full credit for. What you don’t hear in Iowa and New Hampshire is that he is not so affectionately known as Bully Bill here in NM.

The comment about the “little bit of Bill Clinton in me” is about political style in working with people (I guess some people judgmental minds are elsewhere). Richardson received a legendary 68% of the vote in his last election. Most of the people from New Mexico are proud of Governor Bill Richardson except the dye in the wool GOP and support his time on the campaign trail. In addition, he has received more donations from his home state per capita when compared to the other candidates. I call that home state support more so than any other candidate running. Oh by the way, if you have not taken notice, the Bush administration is carrying out their exit plan in Iraq and by time the 2008 election rolls around it not so much a political problem for the GOP. But the problems in the region will still be there, regardless.
From the interview:
“On if he emulates President Clinton: “I don’t try to imitate him. This has always been my style. But yes, there’s a little bit of Bill Clinton in me. One of the things that used to drive me nuts about him, though, was how he would try to convince his enemies he was a good guy. He’d sometimes spend more time talking to his enemies than to his friends. I don’t believe I’m like that, but I do believe you try to seek common ground in order to convince somebody.”

Richardson is so much more qualified than all the other candidates. It’s a shame he has to go to Playboy because the press insists on focusing exculisively on their favorite candidates. Richardson has my vote, and I think he will win the nomination and the presidency.

This guy is nothing but a joke; he screwed up the Dept of Energy when he was in charge of that;

How many of Richardson’s votes came from hispanics in New Mexico (legal and illegal)? He has advocated open borders and his illegal immigrations policies are enough to not want him in as president. He is a Mexican and is looking out for Mexicans and to hell with this country. He has a La Raza attitude. Their country is so great; they just don’t want to live there.

Bill Richardson is a true American, his grandfather was William Blane Richardson, a naturalist who worked for the Smithsonian and moved to Nicaragua in the 1890s. Richardson is from an old Boston family. The record shows that Governor Richardson’s record has been supportive of all Americans End of story.
The only criticism that I have heard from DOE managers who worked with Richardson at DOE, that he was a tough boss and does not mince words lightly. DOE under Bill Richardson’s tenure had many wins than losses. For example, Richardson negotiated with OPEC for lower oil prices which many American are apparently unaware of and increased efficiencies at the DOE.
Deportation is the responsibility of the Federal government and laws are already in place to to protect the borders and deport illegal residents, however, under this Republican administration in the last seven years has failed to up hold the laws of the land to the dismay of their party and the country as a whole. Others will just spin the issue without a history of results or experience.
Now Governor Richardson’s position has always been for securing our border with Mexico and his action speaks louder than words when he called for Federal emergency help to just that. Not once has anyone ever heard Gov Richardson state that he is for 100% instant amnesty for all illegal aliens. Governor Richardson has stated clearly that the immigration process needs to be fine tuned with standards for new immigrants such as passing a background checks, speaking and writing English, understanding the American culture as part of the process of citizenship required under the laws of the land.
I agree with the Richardson’s Plan on illegal immigration, that more manpower, technology, enforcing the laws of our nation, and diplomatic agreements to end illegal immigration are far more effective to solve the root cause of the problem which in return, will invoice the taxpayer a much lower rate than building a fence and life time of upkeep. A fence only puts a band-aid on the problem. By the time the fence is completed across our Southern border, the illegals will find an alternate route into the United States. Secondly, Richardson has stated on many occasions that Mexico must share the responsibility of securing their side of the border and doing more to help their own people in economic terms and this is at the root cause of the problem. Governor Richardson has the diplomacy skills and know how, familarity with the region and issues, and speak the language to ensure success in this area more so than any other candidates from either party.

I can’t believe the “holier-than-thou” attitudes posted here. I bet none of you perfect people have ever uttered a swear word.. yeah, right! Before you make accusations, judgements, etc, perhaps you should actually research what you’re talking about. Governor Richardson has an excellent record and has been a very effective public servant. Rather than an ineffective right-wing religious nut who had a cocaine problem and appears to enjoy wars, I’ll take a cigar and a swear word any day!
