Clinton Calls on Powell
ABC News’ Eloise Harper and Teddy Davis Report: Hillary Clinton often talks about sending her husband around the world to conduct diplomacy but on Tuesday, the Senator said she would also call on Colin Powell.
"I have said I won’t even wait until I’m inaugurated, but as soon as I’m elected I’m going to be asking distinguished Americans of both parties — people like Colin Powell, for example — and others who can represent our country well, including someone I know very well," Clinton told the predominantly black audience after receiving the endorsement of dozens of South Carolina ministers.
Contacted by ABC News’ Teddy Davis, Gen. Colin Powell was tight-lipped Tuesday when asked if he is open to Clinton’s invitation.
"I have not seen what she has said. I don’t know the context of it," Powell told ABC News. "I have admiration for Mrs. Clinton but I have no comment."
Powell, a well known Republican who served as President George W. Bush’s first Secretary of State, turned heads in political circles earlier this year when he confirmed that he has met twice with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.
Despite having met with Obama twice, Powell told ABC News that he is not an adviser to any presidential candidate. Rather, he said that as a former Secretary of State he makes himself available to candidates of both parties.
In addition to having met twice with Obama, Powell said that he has also met with two Republican presidential candidates: Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, whom he described as "a neighbor."
Asked if he had ruled out a pre-primary endorsement in the presidential race, Powell left the door open.
"I’m going to do, what I’m going to do," Powell told ABC News.
Clinton’s mention of Powell is rare and it comes as former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright was doing some defending of her own.
But at the same time the candidate was seemingly offering a bipartisan olive branch, she also touted her electability against the Republicans.
"There are some on the Republican side who are not exactly my fans," Clinton said. "I am well aware of that. I’ve been fighting them for years and I’ve been the recipient of all those incoming attacks."
"I’m still standing," Clinton declared.
One of those 1990s foes, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., who led the effort to impeach former President Bill Clinton, predicted on "Good Morning America" that Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., would win Iowa by a "surprising margin".
You can read excerpts from that interview here or watch the full video here.
The endorsement from the ministers is important for Clinton in this state, where almost half of South Carolina’s Democratic primary voters are African-American.
The fight for votes in South Carolina and the rest of the primary states is expected to intensify in coming weeks. In early December, Obama will campaign with Oprah Winfrey, while the former First Lady continues to dispatch her husband to build support.

Hillary always boasts about fighting Republicans for years. Don’t we want an UNITER? She has no qualifications to be President of the United Staes. This is a big reason why she is dropping in the polls.

Hillary will most likely have a mental crash if she does not become president. Most people I know would never vote for the dictatorial person who can’t relate to Mr. and Mrs. Regular Person. She’s pulling a “Nancy Pelosi” act in already setting up a job for Bill. I don’t think Hillary could win against Rudy.

There is so much fear about Hillary Clinton! Why, because she is a woman? If America does not grow now, it will never grow and then we will be like so many former empires – they self destructed!

Though Condi does have good taste in designer shoes. She’s especially good at shoe shopping during natural disasters. Colin Powell would be a great choice to reclaim a job he was doing a great job. That all ended when he was forced to lie for Bush, and fabricate misinformation.

Hey, Bronx Boy. A true Hillary supporter would, no doubt, not care about facts. Read the information. The disciplinary action was in 2002, not in 1973. Does any of this matter? Probably not, but get the facts right.Oh, and if you think the only reason we “fear” Hillary is that she’s a woman, you truly do need to get the facts.
Posted by: Jeff | November 27, 2007, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm
So Colin Powell was forced to lie for President Bush? I don’t believe that but accepting it as true, how would that qualify him to be Sec of State again?
How can you say that a person who was coerced into lying would be a good person to do the job?
If he was forced to lie for Bush what do you think he will be forced to do for Hillary who knows nothing but lies?
I think the man has more integrity than that.

It was 5 years ago. That is the date of the suspension. She was in the Senate at that time.
I don’t care if her law license is suspended or not (it is probably a good thing she cannot practice law) but you should at least get the math correct.
I bet 1973 was when she passed the bar…

Does anyone else see the blatant pandering by throwing Colin Powell’s name out in front of a group of black ministers? And invoking his name without him ever endorsing her? What, there’s no prominent black DEMOCRATS who could fill that role? What about the black secretary of state or black national security advisor from the Clinton administration. Oh yeah, they were all white.
Posted by: Mac | November 27, 2007, 12:56 pm 12:56 pm
Come on…this was a purely political stunt! Obama is beginning to catch on in Iowa. So she thought it would be wise to call on Powell, a black “Republican” who is now against Bush, in front of an all black audience. Give me a break, does she not realize how transparent she is? I guarantee that she has never spoken to Colin Powell regarding his future missions.
Posted by: Mike C | November 27, 2007, 1:04 pm 1:04 pm
I am sure Colin Powel — who was sacrificed by the Republicans and NeoCons and who is now utterly disgusted by Bush — would welcome the chance to serve in the capacity Hillary suggests under her leadership.
Never before in US History has a man as noble as Powell been so eviscerated by a President and his NeoCon hostage takers.
Posted by: Troy Masters | November 27, 2007, 1:06 pm 1:06 pm
Powell might be spending too much time, testifying at the International Court of Justice at the Hague. How many republicans now understand why the bushbaby administration denied the jurisdiction of a court such as this? Me thinks we can jump over that hoop, sports fans. Film at eleven…

Yeah, like Colin Powell will want to have ANYTHING to do with a Hillary Clinton presidency. Powell never liked the Clintons. I can’t wait to how long it takes before he comes out and absolutely rips Hillary for, in effect, implying that there is some kind of “link” between her and Powell. Implying that he’d be happy to serve her. I get what Hillary was attempting to do here, but it will backfire hard on her when Powell comes out and takes her to task and then…endorses Barack Obama! Ouch.
Either way, you have to believe Hillary is toast. She’s just not the right person at the right time to be President. Her comments on this issue are just one more reason.

America deserves Hillary Clinton to be its next president!!! Maybe finally our political system will go through effective and lasting change. Too long has the power intended for individual citizens been in the hands of lying, cheating politicians and their lapdog lobbying groups. America is doomed by the ignorance of its populace as evident by this woman having any chance at all of being president.

hillary is the best person in the running for the job of getting this country back in line with what MOST americans NEED (notice i did not say WANT) ,and there is no doubt about that to anyone who is objective and intelligent . unfortunately for hillary ,those 2 aforementioned attributes are in fantastically short supply these days ,in this country at least .
i have no doubt most of the posters here wish they could vote someone like ron reagan ( with his distinguished record of making movies with monkeys being his high water mark in american history ,before his election to gov of california ) into the oval office ,yeah he was a real winner that ron reagan.
how can thinking ,intelligent people elect an actor ,with no real political history to run one of the largest states in the usa ,then elect the same moron to be the president of the most powerful nation on the earth ?
ill tell you how it happens…PEOPLE ARE JUST STUPID…
go ahead and be stupid again, vote for

Nice to see the candidates [as well as everyone else] pandoring and courting the various ethnic groups [i.e. the Democrats with the Black Caucus and women... the Republicans going after predominantly Hispanics]… Everyone seems to forget that this isn’t a white, black, or any color of a nation… This is an American nation. Mrs. Clinton may be many things and I don’t always agree with her ideals, but at least she’s smart enough to consult a man who may honestly care for the safety and security of his country. The current administration has all but wrecked Mr. Powell’s reliability in Washington… This [white, southern] reader can’t think of anyone else who he’d rather have back in the saddle other than Colin Powell- a true American patriot.

Does it come as any surprise that someone who is now resident in NY has not kept up her ability to practice law in Arkansas? Surely that isn’t the best you can come up with to criticise Hillary?
Why not go for the huge failure on her husbands big election promise to do something about healthcare on the one occasion she has seriously stepped to the plate as a national political leader? Or the fact that it probably doesn’t actually push womens rights forward if the first time America elects a woman president its on her husbands coattails or the fact she seems to think that sitting through state dinners qualifies you as a foreign policy expert. There are real reasons to think the Democrats can find a better nominee than her. We don’t need stupid minutiae points.

It aint about her being a woman,
It aint about her being Bill Clintons spouse (jilted or otherwise),
Its all about Hillary being a socialist and a marxist. The American Dream has always been that anybody can grow up and become an Oprah Winfrey or a Bill Gates, if they work hard and press on.
Under Hillary “We the People” who were established as the FIRST FREE NATION, must reverse course and become dependent on GOVERNMENT! When you become dependent on GOVERNMENT, by DEFINITION you LOSE YOUR INDEPENDENCE! We have become a nation of blind fools, what politicians like Hillary offer the people today as “sound ” solutions, they would have been hung for back in our founders days…THIS IS PRECISELY THE KIND OF GOVERNMENTS OUR FOUNDING FATHERS FLED FROM!!! And now, after a growing ignorance of our own history (as taught by the very Government LEFTISTS who run our school system) we are ready to hand our freedoms over to a bunch of socialists??? Wake up you sleeper, the enemy is IN the gate and they want your firearms, they want your hard earned dollars, and they want companies formed out of the dirt of hard work and persistence to TURN OVER THEIR PROFITS…oh but dont fret, be a nice little lemming and GOVERNMENT will give you crappy healthcare and baby bonds and all these FREE handouts (how pathetic)…come on… dont be so dense…is this all your freedom is worth? These idiots should be in jail for being traitors to the nation and all who spilled their blood on the fields of battle to secure from these very ideologies…and now a major political party is offering the same bondage as an alternative??? This party is threatening our very independence!

Let’s face it folks. Hillary is a hopeless boor who has no chance to become president. She is a dull-normal intellect, who thinks she can fool people by bringing out her spineless general. Colin Powell is weak. He has no real courage. And, he is not very smart if indeed he gets himself tied into any sort of deal to support the Clintons.

i agree with you, saintlymark, it is a stupid point to even waste time discussing considering all of her other weakpoints and issues surrounding her. but i must disagree with your assertion that she wouldnt keep her arkansas bar association in good standing, that is common practice to do so if you live out of state, in fact why wouldnt you?
especially given the notion that she most certainly wont be living in NY the rest of her life, she only moved here for political gain. she bought a house in NY then ran for senate. what a joke. as soon as she is done in the senate she is out of here no doubt.
speaking of which, she has been an absolute WASTE of a senator! she has not sponsored (or co-sponsored) one single bill in the senate…. not a single one!!! chuck schumer (NY’s other senator) has written dozens of laws/presented legislation in the same time frame that she has been a senator… but peopel out side of NY dont like to look into or read such things. trust me… she is though of as a total joke of a senator in NY.
as a matter of fact, freaking obama who has been a senator for 4 years less than clinton has presnted more legislation than she has! and at least he actually has gotten one of his laws passed! clinton backers are blind…(selectively)

Bah: Actually Ronald Reagan was persident of the Screen Actor’s Guild for many years before being elected Governor of California. Having to run a Union and a large state is infinitely a better CV than being a lawyer involved in ethically shady though legal deals, being First Lady (notice she won’t release her records until after the election), and being a Senator who has not championed Universal Health Care or any of her other causes even in her 2nd term as Senator. She blows with the wind depending upon opinion polls- she was for Iraq before she was against Iraq. She did AND did not read the NIE report on Iraq before authorising the use of force. Let’s face it, Obama is the only straight shooter in this dog and pony show. He can’t screw up the country any worse than the former governors of Texas and Arkansas did.

Darth Hillary……doesn’t the name send shivers down your spine as she will create an evil empire in the US.

Look at Hillary’s name plate. How hilarious that it say “Mrs. Clinton” instead of Hillary Rodham Clinton as she has always insisted on being called, I guess Hillary needs to invoke Bill’s name to get anywhere.

I have finally come up with a new word for “Liberal” that the liberals are trying so hard to distance themselves from: Neo-Socialists not to be confused with Neo-Conservatives.

Hey bah,
as you stated “no one denies he stopped what could have easily become ww3 in the balkans.” Why is my rear sitting in Kosovo right now if he stopped WW3? Reinventing history to stoke Bill’s ego

Say, Bah, those were some cute comments earlier about Ronald Reagan “with his distinguished record of making movies with monkeys being his high water mark in american history…”. The movie you’re referring to is, of course, “Bedtime for Bonzo”, which was made in 1951. At that time, Ronald Reagan was a DEMOCRAT, switching to the Republican Party in 1962 (no word on whether Bonzo remained a registered Democrat).
So according to you, Reagan’s high water mark was starring in a film with a monkey while he was a Democrat. Figured you would know this, since you’re not “stupid” like us conservatives.
Given your command of the facts, it’s no wonder you consider Hillary the best qualified candidate–if she doesn’t make it to the White House, maybe she could co-star in “Bedtime for Bill Clinton”, her “monkeying around” spouse, though she wouldn’t appear in any the bedroom scenes.

“no one denies that bill clinton balanced the federal budget for the first time since the 70s.”
Wrong. The republican controlled congress accomplished this not Bill Clinton.
“no one denies he stopped what could have easily become ww3 in the balkans.”
Wrong again. It was the NATO Peace Keeping forces that prevented that from happening. Clinton was reluctant to even get involved but was under intense pressure to do so. How can I say that? I was deployed to Bosnia. Sorry, but he falls way short of being the 90s FDR. As a matter of fact, he was the worst CIC I have ever served under.
“no one denies he had excellent ties with our allies, and was respected by our enemies as a crafty leader as well.”
He did have the “excellent ties with Allies” you so speak of, but for altogether different reasons than you probably believe. He was respected as a crafty leader, he was viewed (accurately) as a “womanizer” that was too concerned about his popularity to actually tackle the tough issues of the times.
He was not even a good president much less a great one.

duhhhhhhhhhh…..you are soooo freaking smart, no wonder I’m just some dumd grunt over here. Tell me something I don’t already know. Like, what authority did Bill have when he started dropping bombs on Serbia in 1999? better yet when Gen. Wesley Clark wanted to kicked the Russians from the airport and the Brits asked if he was crazy.

hey bah,
thank you for pointing out it’s Bill’s fault that I’m here. I’ll remember that on Flag day when I drive down Bill Clinton BLVD in Pristina

Hillary Clinton is too much big government spending for me. I will stick to Ron Paul, thank you very much.

“Don’t we want an UNITER?”
Right, that’s why you voted for Bush. LOL
“Most people I know would never vote for the dictatorial person who can’t relate to Mr. and Mrs. Regular Person”
LMAO You have to be kidding.
“they self destructed”
Kind of like our country is doing now. Is that what you mean?

thing is frank, you can whack em flat with facts all day long,it does no good. they keep popping back up like the energetic little gophers they really are , spouting the same tired rhetoric that rush the addict and the sycophantically similar drudge report regurgitate out with annoying regularity.

Hmmmm, all this Republican fear-mongering about Hillary. It is amazing! Instead of Republicans bragging about their pick among the Republican candidates, they badmouth Hillary. Shows how terrorized they are of Hillary. But I realize she not only makes their guy of the last 8 years look so hapless, but it also shows their concern about those who are running for the Republican presidential slot. Amazing to see Republicans in such disarray that they only grouse about Hillary. I mean, things are in bad shape when a Republican spends so much time on Hillary. I guess, now that I think of of it, it seems natural. After all, they pray we will all forget about the last 8 years of this dreadful Bush administration.

Well golly dem’ folks are sure in a ruckas over Hillary. I Have to laugh out loud over some of the desperate rants that don’t hold a candle to the WORST PRESIDENT IN U.S. HISTORY’S RECORD. Hillary must be scaring them. I can see them in the dark clutching a copy of The Wall Street Journal and their G.I. Joe dolls.

So the warmonger is going to bring in Powell who LIED in front of the UN to start an illegal, completely unnecessary war??
Why would ANYONE vote for more of the same thing we’ve had for 8 years?!?
Oh wait…I must be a misogynist for thinking Hillary’s a TERRIBLE choice for Prez.

Wow! Reading these posts indicates Senator Clinton is beneath the skin of Republicans: rampant fear.

It really does’t matter. Powell(I use to respect him) was just a puppet used by members of the corporate elites presently running this country for their own selfish gain. Bush-Cheney, Rockefeller, Murdock and others. Hellary, Obamination, Edwarts, Gouliani,Mitt and the others are the next crop of political puppets…go Ron Paul!

Seems Hillary forgot to check with Powell as to whether he would even take her call. Dumb.

the clintons are liars. pure and simple. they will be more devisive than bush. we will have more calls for impeachment, more hate, deeper political divides, theres nothing good that could come of a hillary presidency, this is only starting.

Why do so many people hate Hillary Clinton? No wonder America is losing it’s influence with the rest of the world. Hillary Clinton is a strong woman, and has been a uniter from her first day in the Congress. It’s great that she reach out to Colin Powell because he was the only voice of reason in the Bush Administration. United we stand Divided we fall.

Funny, I keep seeing posts about how us Republicans have “rampant fear” about Hillary. It’s not fear, it’s revulsion. She’s every bit the dissembling liar that her husband was without the political acumen. We’ve already seen her track record when it comes to the White House travel office firings, the Rose Law Firm “missing” records, the 900 FBI files on Republicans from previous administrations illegally obtained by her personal hire, Craig Livingstone, and a whole host of other nefarious behavior.
And we see in posts here people who call her a “uniter”–ha!!! She’s plays the gender card when Tim Russert asks her legitimate policy questions during a debate, then turns around and says “I’ll go ten rounds with anybody!” Not until the fight is fixed, clearly, as we saw in the next debate with Wolf Blitzer as the moderator.
How about the “planted” questions and now CNN’s latest fiasco on the Republican youtube debate with her political operatives posing questions as “undecided Republican voters”? All of you people who see Hillary as some sort of saint have clearly been drinking the Clinton Kool Aid for some time now; wake up before you’ve overdosed. Nominate somebody from the Democrat party who at least has the interest of the people, instead of themself, at heart.
If you liked Richard Nixon, you’ll love Hillary Clinton. Every bit as ambitious, ever more paranoid, and a lot more dangerous.

Are all of you folks on someone’s payroll? Did any one of you read what the article actually said?
“…distinguished Americans of both parties — people like Colin Powell, for example…”. Sen. Clinton was not saying that she had asked anything of Gen. Powell. Nor did she say she was ever going to ask Gen. Powell to serve in any capacity. She said she would ask people, such as Gen. Powell, people who were not Democrats, to represent the United States.
To be honest, the original entry’s headline is completely false; however, that is no excuse for the childish rantings posted here.
Unless, of course, you ARE children?
