Clinton ‘Planted Questions’ Story Grows

ABC News’ Eloise Harper Reports: A spokesman from Hillary Clinton’s campaign refused to comment Tuesday after new reports surfaced furthering the charge that the Clinton campaign planted questions during a Veterans Day town hall meeting in Iowa.

According to reports on CNN, Muriel Gall-Chasanoff, the student who was asked to ask the Democratic frontrunner a question about global warming, says a Clinton staffer opened a binder holding a sheet of paper with about eight questions on it and told her to ask the question about global warming.  Next to the question, Gallo-Chasanoff said, the sheet read "college student."  She also alleges that there was another man who asked a planted question about jobs-in light of the recent closing of the Maytag plant closing in Newton, IA.

Clinton spokesman Mo Elleithee said:  "We’ve addressed this incident repeatedly over the past several days.  The Senator had no idea who she was calling on, and this is not acceptable campaign process moving forward.  We’ve taken steps to ensure that it never happens again."

During the Sunday event in Waterloo, Iowa, Clinton took questions from the audience after her speech, focused primarily on veterans. The campaign was clear when asked, that no questions had been planted. The Senator was asked about the recent mini-scandal that was unveiled that a student was approached by the campaign to ask the senator a question last week in Newton, Iowa.

It was later reported that there had been another instance of a staffer approaching someone back in April to ask the Senator a question about Iraq.

"Well it was news to me and neither I nor my campaign approve of that – and it will certainly not be tolerated," Clinton was also asked if these two instances that have been reported were the only ones she knew about. Clinton said "you know everything I know."

Clinton was also asked about the sharpening attacks from Senator Edwards and Senator Obama on the heels of the Jefferson Jackson dinner and how that will affect her electability.  "I think you have to evaluate this on an ongoing basis and that’s what I intend to do. I intend as I said last night to attack the problems on the country and turn up the heat on the Republicans."

Clinton was read Senator Obama’s comments from the Jefferson Jackson dinner. Obama had said that he wants to be driven by principle and not by polls; not by calculation but by conviction, Clinton was asked if she thought those remarks were aimed at her and questioning her integrity.  "I don’t know what he is addressing. He has never been specific so I can’t really draw any conclusions."

Clinton was joined on stage with Retired Major General Paul Eaton who has endorsed Clinton for president. The Senator addressed issues that concerned veterans and announced 36 new co-chairs to its Veterans and Military Retirees For Hillary Committee.  "Everyone of us ought to say a prayer and a thank you to these extraordinary young people who are serving with such distinction," Clinton said referring to the troops serving in Iraq and abroad.

I don’t believe for one minute that HC did not know of the planted questions. She probably initiated it herself. She is just that devious!!

Posted by: Janice | November 12, 2007, 10:42 am 10:42 am

The clinton campaign has used this as far back as the ’92 election… and HC was in charge of that …do not believe for a minute her fingerprints are not on this. The used the same tactics in Colorado 3 weeks ago.

Posted by: jlt | November 12, 2007, 11:02 am 11:02 am

Even if we give Hillary the benefit of the doubt and pretend that she is ignorant of this, is it reasonable to trust a candidate that surrounds herself with such devious staffers? Are we to believe she called on just the right questioners by accident? This is THE scandal that will ruin her candidacy in Iowa, because the practice of planting questions is a blatant violation of the integrity of the electoral process.

Posted by: Karl | November 12, 2007, 11:18 am 11:18 am

Hillary’s staffers were pointing out to her which students to take questions from. They were pointing out the students with planted questions. Hillary was part of the entire orchestrated question-planting charade. Don’t tell me she was unaware.

If Hill said she didn’t know anything about it…well then by-gosh she didn’t know anything about it! So what if she loads the deck anyway. What right do the people have to challenge her? How does challenging an individual help anybody? How does challenging a candidate tell you anything more about them then what they tell you!? Listen, we must remember — It’s not what she “doesn’t know” that’s important…it’s how she positions herself “between the issues” to be able to walk the line inbetween YES and NO, never committing to anything that she may later regret. That’s what important. You don’t need to “know” anything to do that. All you need to do…is forget. Forget. Forget.

The process of staged questions appears to be used by both parties with all candidates.
Isn’t that a function of canned consultative politics? That’s what they are paid for, and the manner of today’s politics, plastic as they are.
Plastic politics and media bytes is the rule, not the exception now.

For someone who is unaware of just about everything (where the Rose Law Firm records are, husband cheating, Shu being on the lam for 10 years, planted questions, etc., etc., etc.) how can the American people possibly expect her to “be aware” of anything else going on in the world? She doesn’t seem be be aware of anything, ever.

New Research shows Obama beating Clinton in online participation
Highlights:
*Obama’s blog is updated almost three times as frequently as Clinton’s and has generated 73,566 comments over the course of the campaign – 64,186 more than Clinton’s 9,380 comments.
*Obama’s lead in internet participation has grown in recent months as Clinton’s has fallen. Last month, users of Obama’s website posted 20,665 comments to Clinton’s 868. One possible explanation of the gap is the different policies the campaigns utilize on their websites. Obama’s campaign posts all comments and allows users to flag inappropriate comments for review. Clinton’s campaign makes use of a moderator, not posting comments until they have made it past the campaign’s censor.

It was obvious to any literate person that they were doing this during Bill Clinton’s “invitation only town-hall meetings” during his first Presidential campaign. People in the audience were lobbing “soft balls” underhanded that could be easily “hit out of the park”.
Can we believe a thing she says? Listen to the track record… lie: “I did not have sex with that woman”… truth: DNA from sained blue dresses tell the story. Alibi: “Well, oral sex really isn’t sex”… and “it depends on what the definition of the word “is” is. Hillary’s story: “I had no clue that Bill was doing interns all that time.” Just like she had no clue that the “lobbed softball” questions were planted in the audience.
Let no one believe that ruthless and wretched liar Hillary Clinton.

Posted by: Ken | November 12, 2007, 1:07 pm 1:07 pm

It’s predictable that Hillary supporters will claim that “everybody does it.”
Well, does everyone do it and then lie about it, like Hillary is lying about it? Her staff plants questions and tells Hillary which people to accept questions from, and Hillary denies knowing about it?
And the best defense you people have is that possibly everyone does it?
I like to believe bad things about politicians, too, but these Clintons claim that every bad thing they do and every lie they tell is something that everyone else is doing.
Can car thiefs and murderers and rapists get out of jail if they prove someone else has previously done the same thing they’re in jail for???

If Mrs. Bill Clinton is the smartest woman in the world, why does she know nothing about anything when in hot water. Playing dumb is probably a skill she honed while dealing with her husband’s serial adultery, but I don’t think it works to well when running for President.

Lies, lies and more lies. Hillbill is going down.

Posted by: Lawrence Talbot | November 12, 2007, 2:45 pm 2:45 pm

If Senator Clinton was unaware that her staff was planting questions for her to answer, what does that say about her leadership abilities? What does it say about how nervous her staff is about her performance on unscripted questions? This sounds like Bush, JR. all over again.
Her staff certainly has reason to be anxious about her performance; her speech in Des Moines (available on CSPAN) was terrible. She looked like a third rate actress playing a role. She did not look natural or comfortable at all.
The last six years show that you can’t expect too much when you elect people based upon their last name. All of the other candidates in the race (for both parties) got there on their own abilities. Despite the fawning press, Clinton’s performance so far shows that she doesn’t have the chops for the job. Most of us don’t, but not very many of us are running for President.

People are people and as far as I’m concerned, what they do on their personal time, is their own business. I am more concerned with what they do with this country. The Clintons did a hell of a lot better than the Bushes. The democrats do for all while the republicans do for themselves(mostly the rich). Ask yourself if most of these “God abiding,Gay-bashing,gay republicans, did’t get rich of the sweat of the poor?

Norma – So, you have nothing to defend Hilary on, so you must bash Bush? You do realize there is not a Bush running for president, do you not?

Posted by: Corrie | November 12, 2007, 4:01 pm 4:01 pm

I think the Bush Administration did a lot worse when they planted Male Prostitute Jeff Gannon in the White House Press Corps.I Wonder what other services he provided? I did’nt see half the hate spin I see on Hillary. Or how about the Fema press conference? The Hill haters sure don’t hold their BOYS to the same standard, Swiftboat anyone?

Posted by: Rude | November 12, 2007, 4:03 pm 4:03 pm

Rude – Again, so all you have to defend Hilary is “everybody does it”? Bush is not running for president, Hilary Clinton is. If she wants my vote, she has to show me that she is capable of being the most powerful leader on the planet. So far, she is “unaware” of just about everything anyone asks her about. That may be good enough for you, but it is not good enough for me.

Why would one of Clinton’s lackeys plant a question unless she were thoroughly briefed on the answer? What is more contemptible?, Hillary’s dance or the transparency of her lies?”

Posted by: Dan | November 12, 2007, 10:30 pm 10:30 pm

That depends on your definition of the
word “Aware”! Aware is the New Is!
Hillary Clinton is an antonym for truthful! Hillary should get the actor who played “Joe Isuzu” in those old TV Ads to answer her debate questions and give press conferences for her!

And this is supposed to come as a surprise, I am sure there have been many planted between both Hillary and Bill especially at the “house” or fund raising receptions as well — honest? No — smooth and scripted, Used to be — now –
And yes Hillary had to know why else memorize answers to questions people don’t ask — catch her off guard and she doesn’t know how to answer — and this is who people want running the country???

Posted by: Andy | November 13, 2007, 12:21 pm 12:21 pm

What is the big issue? Bush has been doing this since the beginning. He limits every event he does to only those that agree with everything he says and all the questions have been scripted for years. Even when he or anyone in his cabinet appears with the military, the military members that appear with him are screened and scripted before the appearance. Based on the example set by the current Commander in Chief, it would seem that you get farther by controlling your message. I would bet that all of them on both sides of the aisle do it, and whoever this person is who claims they operated as a plant, probably is a plant from another campaign.

Posted by: hachidori | November 13, 2007, 12:23 pm 12:23 pm

Hmmm… When the administration does it, it’s bad, when Clinton does it, it’s OK, because everyone does it and Clinton’s far better than Bush. Odd, I didn’t know Bush was running and that question planting is Ok if a democrat does it. At least we know what to expect of her as a president. Deception, lies, false representation, which may be what the current administration is doing, but like democrats say, it’ll be far better deception, lies, and false representation than Bush ever offered. It’s stunning that she’s going to be the nominee, but democrats I think have placed Clintons higher than Kennedys.

There’s other ways to segue into topics she wants to cover than resorting stupidly to planted questions. ANY kind of disingenuous manipulation is a boat anchor that will be tugged at by Republicans after the Primaries… this is as sure as the sun rising tomorrow.

Obama and/or Edwards have been placing plants in Hillary’s Iowa events from as far back as the beginning of October.

Posted by: BenMurphyNYC | November 13, 2007, 1:05 pm 1:05 pm

As happened in 2004, many Dems and the MSM seen to have PREMATURELY selected their candidate – once again, a pitifully wrong choice. Chris Dodd said some very good things during the last debate. He was impressive. At the other end, Conniving Calculating Cackling Clinton did her usual evasions of direct answers to any substantive question, and showed that she will speak out of both sides of her mouth simultaneously, on anything.
The campaign platform of Conniving is pathetic. It consists of: Show-Me-The-Money, Say-Whatever-They-Want-To-Hear, Continue-The-Neocon-Wars, Sell-The-Lincoln-Bedroom, and I-Want-A-New-Pair-Of-Hsu’s. There are no depths of depravity to which this moneywhore won’t go, including staging questions at public events.
America needs to do better than Conniving. She is nothing more than Bush-Lite on the neocon wars and many other critical issues. As an advocate for the most un-American piece of legislation ever enacted, the so-called “Patriot” Act, Conniving shows clearly that she will be as lawless, secretive and anti Bill of Rights as DickNBush.
Wake up Dems – take the party back from the Loser Faction and nominate somebody who is NOT hated by 50% of the voters, who is NOT a puppet of lobbyists, one that has ethics, honesty, and a commitment to ending the endless NEOCON wars. There are many good choices, but Conniving isn’t one of them.

Hillary knew about it; she knew “who” to call on, She knew “what” answer to say and she has a history of planting questions. She is a phony. America is sick of the Clintons. They think they own people, especially the African-Americans. Is this the best the Democratic Party has to offer? John F. Kennedy must be turning in his grave; how sad his Democratic Party has become.

what’s pathetic is that she’s 50-something-years-old and lying and conyving like a school girl. Oh yea Hillary for president! We need a strong leader with integrity not a feminist, snake-oil saleswoman. Man what have we become that we even entertain someone like her? Where’s the wisdom that should come with her age? Where’s the confidence? The leadership?

Posted by: don | November 13, 2007, 1:19 pm 1:19 pm

Every single government official in office now needs to be kicked out and we need to start over from the ground up. There are too many secrets, coverups, and far too much corruption. As for this particular incident, I’m quite sure that the top three candidates in both parties practice it. Clinton, Obama, and Edwards are all unappealing to me..Clinton is too entrenched in the corporate machine the government has become, Obama is too green to clean up the HUGE mess overseas and within our own country, and Edwards made all his money as a lawyer off the malpractice epedemic plaguing our country…we have far too many lawyers with not enough good work to do, so they make their money off working to get criminals better treatment than their victims and suing each other. Anyway, out of them, Clinton is the only one who seems to have the capability to take care of what needs to be done for the country right now.
Until the whole country wises up and kicks all of these old boys club losers out of office, and stops having chronic ADD, then I have to say we reap what our apathy sows.

No president or presidential candidate is ever perfect. All voters know that. When you bash Hillary Clinton – think about the alternatives. We generally have to choose between the least “bad” of 2 imperfect choices. More of you should be concerned about who you are sending to the Senate and Congress. I wonder how many of you who making these accusations of wrong doing, get out and vote on election day.
I personally think it is pathetic that the other candidates can’t focus on what they will do right for the country instead of what Hillary Clinton will do bad. This tells me that they do not have much confidence in their ability to win on their own merit – so they stoop to making negative remarks and accusations about the opponent, who is ahead in the polls. Unfortunately, we all know that negative politics and planting rumors works – example: Look what the Bush campaign did to John Kerry with the swiftboat negative campaign against him. It would seem to me that the Bush group could not win unless they ran a negative campaign against the opponent. Alas, what do we have to show for the last 8 years??

Bashing Bush now is accomplishing nothing. We are in the progress of finding a new candidate to nominate and hopfully win president and run this country.
It seems the Bush bashing is directed in some way to make you forget or not ask a new candidates primary stance on issues Its easy to say Bush is a bad president for something. But! what will you do as a candidate running for president if you win?
So candidates’ bash Bush but have your direction of what you WILL do for fact differently

Nothing will come of this, because stupid liberal voters will vote for these criminals called the Clintons. The blind leading the blind.

Not that I am a big Hillary, but I find this hilarious. The president does it, they all do it. Bush will fill a town hall with carefully selected people. They all look for the softballs

And so it begins….”I did NOT have sex with that woman!!” President Bill (oral in the oval office) Clinton, “I did NOT plant those questions!” Hillary Clinton.
Do we as a country REALLY want another Clinton White House given their morally casual attitudes and obvious disregard for honesty and integrity? Is this the kind of lead by example that our country so needs today? Of the Dems, give me Obama, he seems the most firmly planted of the bunch, and as far as I can tell hasn’t sold his soul to the Washington machine(yet).

How did Hillary even get this far? Why is no attention being focused on the White House papers regarding Hillary/Whitewater FBI file that “went missing”, and later the WH person responsible for them also “went missing” supposedly via a ‘suicide’! Later, after focus went away from them, the papers mysteriously reappeared! When Bill was gov, his nurse mother accidently killed a person in surgery with a backwards airway tube. The doctor who falsified the death certificate was appointed state surgeon general. Surely Hillary knew about this and all other illicit activity, yet said nothing. How much was Wal-Mart involved in getting Bill elected as gov/president, and their co-incidental nova-like growth during his term?
Why are almost no reporters raising these hard questions?

I guess it’s OK if you are a Republican… No one made a peep out of years of Bush and Rove planted questions at handpicked “town hall” meetings… But, hey, that’s OK… they’re Republicans.
What is good for the gander is good for the goose… If Republicans can do this, than so can Hillary and more power to her… The hypocrisy of the right in action! Shame on the media for their right-wing bias on this issue… the NEVER called out on the planted questions by Rove and the previous administration… And shame on these Democratic activists who are fueling the story in order to bolster John Edwards shameful attacks on the front runner. They are damaging the party and the country in the process. Some of them should learn Reagan’s 11th commandment… thou shall not make another party member look bad…
I see that the Clinton Derangement Syndrome is in full bloom here… a strange disease… everyone hates her because she’s good at what she does, pretty much… she’s a great politician… one of the best… she knows how to win… no wonder republicans hate her.

Can we possibly trust anything Hillary says? I seriously think this woman needs some psychological help. It just sickens me that she gets away with these outright lies. The evidence against this woman is piling up America, WAKE UP!

This really should not be a surprise to anyone who knows how the Clinton’s/campaign have perfected this political tool (money/fund raising). As to whether Hillary knew can probably not be proven unless some insider comes forward. But there would probably be consequences, so don’t count on it. It was telling, however, how Hillary was able to pick out this one individual in the crowd.

Mike, Your rational that two wrongs make a right is a dangerous point of view. It’s probably true that both sides have done this. IMO that doesn’t make it something the American electorate should put up with – from either side. More power to her was the same attitude the German’s had after WWI. And we all know what happens when the people allow an ambitious politician to make the rules and twist the truth.

Do a little side step-
Whenever I see Hillary debate I’m reminded of Charles Durning’s character as Governor in the “Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” with his “Do a little Side Step” routine. The press asks the question “Governor have you seen the evidence of the disgraceful situation at the Chicken Ranch?” Governor’s response – “Fellow Texans, I am proudly standing here to humbly see…..I assure you, and I mean it! Now says I don’t speak out as plain as day and fellow Texans, I’m for progress! And the Flag! Long may it fly….I’m a poor boy, come to greatness! So it follows that I cannot tell a lie!” He then jumps in his Limo and leaves the press and everyone else scratching their head. The press again approaches him on the Capital steps asking “Governor, do you plan to take action against the Chicken Ranch?” Governor’s response – “Now my good friends, it behooves me…to be solemn and declare…..I’m for goodness! And for Progress! And for living-clean-and-saying- daily-prayer….now my good friends, you can sleep nights! I’ll continue to stand tall! You can trust me, because I promise, I shall keep-a-watchful-eye-upon-ya’ll…….”
Hillary’s politics in a nutshell, Deny, Evade, be Vague, Insinuate and Lie. (DEVIL), and when you DO answer leave them thinking “Huh?”….

ABC seems to have few full time folks assigned to slime Hillary – slime is the correct word as ABC knows – but never mentions – that everyone’s staff trys to get increased audiance involement pre-speech – and offers questions to ask if they person they are speaking to indicates they do not have a question. Hillary now says her staff is now under orders to not do so – she is doing more than any others to meet the media bar – but then a women always has to be a great deal better than the male to have any chance at corporate (and the media is “corporate”) support.
At least ABC does not have an over the top, biased against both Democrats and women, “reporter/pundit” like NBC’s Tim Russert that takes a “walk in the park at 3 am with GE’s CEO – Jack Welsh – to plan how NBC will shout down any attempt in 2000 to get a statewide count – a stetewide recount that later the media review showed would have put Gore in office.

Who cares if the question was planted or not? It was a good question! And so what if a college student asked it? It was a topic that needed to be addresses. All presidential candidates are in it to win it – we can’t expect anything less from them. They all probably do this – they just all don’t get caught! The college student just opened her mouth about it to get publicity and to get on CNN and GMA. That’s the only scandalous part about this.

If the Hillary attackers would attack their SOCK PUPPET in the WHITEWASH HOUSE with a similar zeal, think of the PROGRESS we could make.
