Lott’s Brother-In-Law Indicted in Alleged Bribery Scheme

ABC News Reports: Mississippi newservices are reporting that Sen. Trent Lott’s brother-in-law has been indicted in an alleged scheme to bribe a state court judge in connection with a lawsuit related to Hurricane Katrina. Scruggs was involved in the lawsuit against State Farm on behalf of homeowners on the Gulf Coast.

Lott is not named in the indictment, which is available here: http://www.sunherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/214671.html

Scruggs is a famous lawyer in his own right, having been involved in both asbestos and tobacco cases. It is unclear at this point if the brewing scandal has anything to do with Lott’s abrupt announcement on Monday that he’ll resign by the end of the year. Lott’s office has not commented on the Scruggs indictment.

Lott, the number two Republican in the Senate, announced earlier this week that he will resign from office before the year is out.  http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=3912749
